감성과 기술의 융합, ‘휴매니어’의 시대를 열다

2016년 현재, 우리 사회를 대표하는 핵심 키워드는 ‘창조경제’다. 현 정부 출범 이래 지속적으로 추진해온 창조경제는 과학기술과 ICT를 사회 전반에 확산시키고 융합함으로써 미래를 이끌어갈 새로운 가치를 발굴하는 것을 주요 과제로 삼고 있다. 그리고 그 과정의 가장 중심에 있는 것이 바로 ‘ICT’다. 이에 이번호 <월간 파워코리아>에서는 포스트 스마트시대의 주력 ICT 산업인 ‘감성 ICT’를 선도할 첨단 기술과 우수 인재 양성에 힘쓰고 있는 성균관대학교 H-lab의 조준동 교수를 만나봤다.

감성 ICT 시대를 선도할 융합형 인재 양성
ICT는 창조경제의 핵심 기반이다. ICT가 산업과 기업의 인프라로서 자리매김하게 되면 기존 상품 및 서비스의 고도화는 물론, 전혀 새로운 상품과 서비스의 창조도 가능하기 때문이다. 특히 이른바 ‘BMW’로 일컬어지는 빅데이터(Big data), 모바일(Mobile), 웨어러블(Wearable)이 새로운 화두로 등장한 이래 각 산업 분야에서는 이를 기존 기술에 접목·융합시키려는 연구가 지속되고 있으며, 일부 가시적인 성과를 보이며 대중 앞에 선보인 기술들은 큰 성공을 거두며 천문학적인 가치를 창출하기도 했다. 이에 성균관대학교에서는 국가산업융합지원센터의 ‘2013년 산업융합인재양성 사업’에 선정, 5년 간 약 35억 원의 지원금을 받으며 일반대학원 ‘휴먼ICT융합학과’를 신설해 운영해오고 있다. 조준동 교수는 “저희는 산업통상자원부 창의산업융합지원센터의 지원을 받아 4H(Hands, Head, Health, Heart)를 기반으로 인류의 행복을 만들어가기 위한 연구와 교육에 주력하고 있습니다. H-lab 학생들을 스마트 케어를 위한 감성 UX ‘융합형 휴매니어’로 양성하는 것이 저희의 목표입니다”라고 밝혔다.

스마트 헬스케어, 기술에 감성을 더하다
미래학자 리차드 왓슨은 “첨단 기술이 발달할수록 감성과 디자인이 중요하다”고 말했다. 조준동 교수는 “감성 ICT 산업은 2020년까지 26조(세계시장 1,000조)원의 시장으로 성장하리라 전망되고 있습니다. 이 분야는 IT를 중심으로 BT, CT, DT, MT 등 다학제간 융합이 반드시 필요합니다. 이에 따라 저희 학과에서는 전자공학, 컴퓨터공학, 화공학, 신소재공학, 기계공학, 디자인학, 심리/인지과학, 의공학, 경영학, 테크노경영학 등의 교수 및 학생으로 구성된 산업 융합 특성화 프로그램을 마련하고, 휴먼 감성디자인 융합형 제품 및 서비스 분야의 스마트 리더, 융합형 인재의 양성을 위해 노력하고 있습니다”라고 밝혔다.

H-lab이 추구하는 융합교육의 성과는 각종 대회 수상과 제품 개발로 증명되고 있다. 2014년에는 KAIST에서 열린 웨어러블 기기 경진대회에서 ‘암환자용 스마트가발’ 개발로 삼성전자 DMC연구소장 상을 수상했으며, 현재 상용화를 위한 특허 출원과 기능 보완에 주력하고 있다. 'SBS 서울디지털포럼(SDF) 2015'의 연계 행사로 열리는 ‘제2회 글로벌 해커톤-웨어러블 챌린지’에서는 스마트워치의 경계를 허문 어플리케이션 개발로 최우수상을, 미래창조과학부가 주최한 ‘제 27회 글로벌SW공모대전’에서는 식습관 개선 디바이스로 동상을 수상했다. 그밖에도 H-lab의 학생들은 ‘피지컬 아바타와 디지털 아바타를 이용한 자세 교정 플랫폼’, ‘웨어러블 헬스케어 스마트 밴드’, ‘사물통신 기반 촉감 전달 웨어러블 디바이스’ 등의 프로젝트를 수행하며 다학제간 융합연구의 시너지 효과를 창출하고 있다. 

지난해 11월, ‘제1회 국제 휴먼ICT융합 심포지엄’을 성공적으로 개최하며 스마트 헬스분야의 최신 기술 및 산업 동향 등에 대한 정보 교류의 물꼬를 튼 바 있는 조준동 교수는 “산업활성화와 협력 방안을 논의할 수 있는 기회의 장을 만들기 위해 매년 심포지움을 개최할 계획”이라고 전했다. 

사용자의 경험을 중시하는 방향으로 발전하고 있는 첨단 기술 트렌드에 발맞춰 사회적, 인간적 교감 능력을 이끌어내고 관련 전문지식과 실무 능력을 체화한 융합형 ‘휴매니어(Human+Engineer)’의 시대를 열어가고자 하는 성균관대학교 H-lab. 우리가 꿈꾸는 미래기술들을 현실로 바꾸어가고 있는 이들의 노력이 인류의 건강한 내일, 행복한 삶의 실현을 위한 마중물이 되어 주길 기대한다.

Fostering talents who will lead the age of ICT
ICT is the foundation of Creative Economy. It makes the existing products and services advanced and creates new products and services. We are living in the age where Big Data, Mobile and Wearable are controling our daily lives and the development of related technology and its application are constantly made. Some of them have surprised the world and made an astronomical amounts of money. Chosen for 2013 Creative and Industrial Convergence Human Resource Education Program supported from Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Sungkyunkwan University has run Graduate School of HumanICT Convergence(H-lab) on a 5 year subsidy of KRW 3.5 billion provided by the government. The university's H-lab Prof. Cho said "With the support from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and under the slogan of 4H (Hands, Head, Health, Heart), we are carrying out effective R&D and training in pursuit of happiness of human beings on earth. It is our goal to make our H-lab students as 'emotional convergence humaneer (human+engineer)' who will make a breakthrough in the smart healthcare field." 

Smart Health Care adds emotions to technology
Futurologist Richard Watson once said "Emotion and design get more important as the development of cutting edge technology make an advance." Prof. Cho said "The emotional ICT industry is estimated to create a market worth KRW 26 trillion (one quadrillion on global market) by 2020. In order to do that, the integration of IT, BT, CT, DT and MT is a must. To take a greater part in the field, H-lab currently is providing various combined programmes covering electronics, computer science, chemical engineering, new materials engineering, mechanical engineering, design, psychology, cognitive science, medical engineering, administration and techno-management in the hope of promoting smart leaders and products made with emotional technology." H-lab has made numerous achievements. The lab invented Smart Wig for Cancer Patient and won the director's prize of Samsung Electronics DMC Research Center at a wearable device fair held in KAIST. Prof. Cho has applied for a patent and is preparing for commercialization of the wig. The team also won the best prize at 2nd Global Hackathon Wearable Challenge with an app that broke the boundaries of smart watches, and the bronze prize at 27th Global Software Contest with a dietary improvement device. Other inventions include 'Posture correction platform (physical avatar + digital avatar)', 'wearable health care smart bend' and 'IoT-based sense transmission wearable device'. In November last year, Prof. Cho successfully held 1st International Human ICT Fusion Symposium and initiated exchange in the field of smart health care information and technology. He said "I will keep holding the international event  yearly basis to promote global cooperation in the field." Power Korea sends a message of support to Prof. Cho and H-lab.
