1970년대 후반, 벽돌산업은 3D산업의 일종으로 더 이상 발전하기 어려운 것으로 여겨졌다. 그 반대편에서 섰던 단 한 사람, 한삼화 회장은 (주)삼한씨원을 설립하며 벽돌산업이 현대식 제조공정 도입과 함께 시스템화, 첨단화되는 과정을 제대로만 거친다면 미래의 고부가가치산업으로 성장할 것임을 확신했다. 약 40년 가까운 세월이었다. 2016년 현재 (주)삼한씨원은 명실상부한 국내1위 황토벽돌 제조기업으로 성장했으며 전국적으로 삼한씨원의 황토벽돌을 사용한 수많은 건물들 속에 우리는 일상을 살고 있다. 

“흙은 모든 생명의 근원이다”
흔한 말로 ‘인간은 흙에서 태어나 흙으로 돌아간다’라는 표현이 자주 쓰이곤 한다. 조금 더 범위를 넓혀 살아 숨 쉬는 생명체, 나무와 숲과 같은 만물의 모든 존재는 흙에서 생육한 것을 먹고 살다 돌아가길 반복한다. 그러한 이유로 한 회장은 ‘흙’이 인간과 아주 밀접한 관계를 가지고 있음을 강조해왔다. 무엇보다 본인 스스로 흙에 대하여 끊임없이 연구하고 또 개발해왔기에 흙 자체가 가지고 있는 이로움을 너무나도 잘 안다. 이미 국내에서도 황토 관련 제품들을 주변에서 쉽게 발견할 수 있고, 귀농열풍과 맞물려 시골에 황토집을 짓고 사는 귀농인들이 많아지는 등 황토의 장점을 일일이 열거하기 힘들만큼 검증이 끝난 요즘인 것이다. 그러한 이유로 평생 황토로 만든 벽돌을 만들고 보급하는 것을 한삼화 회장은 자신의 숙명이자 사명으로 삼고 한 길만을 걸어왔다. (주)삼한씨원은 그런 의미에서 국내 대표의 황토벽돌 제조기업이기 이전에 장인정신이 깃든 한 개인 노력의 결과물이기도 하다. 

우리 고유의 ‘황토’를 고부가가치산업으로 발전시키다
(주)삼한씨원은 대구에 본사, 경상북도 예천에 공장을 두고 총 55,000평의 부지에 450억 원을 투자하여 흙 100%의 황토벽돌 및 황토보도벽돌을 생산하고 있다. 여기서 대개의 사람들은 ‘황토’라는 키워드 자체에만 주목할 때, 그것을 현대적 설비 도입방식이 힘든 옛 것, 혹은 구식이라고 인식할지도 모른다. 하지만 세계적으로 보았을 때, 벽돌은 곧 유럽으로 통칭되고 있는 실정이었으며 한 회장은 그 공식을 깨기 위해, 정말 많은 노력을 기울여왔다. 그 결과, 삼한씨원은 1990년 경북 예천 공장을 설립하며 이탈리아의 모란도(Morando)사 설비를, 2003년 제2공장을 증설할 때는 독일의 링글(Lingl)사 설비를 도입하는 등 우리 고유의 ‘황토’를 고부가가치산업으로의 패러다임으로 발전시키는데 성공했다. 국내 최고의 첨단 제조공정을 도입한 삼한씨원의 황토벽돌이 유럽 선진 벽돌 제품을 뛰어넘는 기술 개발에 도전하여 완벽한 단열과 천연습도 조절, 각종악취 제거, 원적외선 방출, 이산화탄소(CO2) 흡착∙분해 기능으로 쾌적한 환경을 제공할 뿐 아니라 고강도의 제품으로 내구성이 우수하고 동결융해 저항성이 뛰어나 반영구적으로 사용이 가능한 제품을 자체적으로 생산하게 된 것이다. 또한, 다량의 실리카, 알루미나, 철분, 마그네슘 등을 함유하고 있으며, 신체의 노폐물을 제거하고 원적외선을 방사하여 인체에 좋은 영향을 준다고 알려져 있는 황토벽돌에 많은 이들이 주목하기 시작하면서 삼한씨원은 1997년 ISO 9001 인증을 획득한 후 매년 심사를 통과하고 있다. 그 이외 품질보증 Q마크, KS, GD, 이노비즈, K마크, 환경표지 등으로 세계 시장에서 인정받기 시작하며 우수한 품질 경쟁력을 인정받아 조달청으로부터 ‘자가품질보증업체 제1호’로 선정되기도 했다.    

꾸준한 R&D가 기업의 미래를 좌우 
(주)삼한씨원은 KS규격의 5mm 오차기준보다 더 엄격한 자체 오차기준 1mm의 품질기준을 적용하며 제품의 품질을 세계 최고로 상승시켰고, 계절 및 온도변화가 국내 환경과 유사한 미국 ASTM규격보다 훨씬 상회하는 고강도 제품으로 평균 압축강도가 건축용 벽돌 350㎏f/㎠, 바닥용 벽돌 700㎏f/㎠ 이상을 가지는 세계최고 수준의 제품을 생산하고 있다. 삼한씨원의 황토벽돌은 이런 높은 품질성을 인정받아, 서울의 덕수궁 돌담길과 대학로, 명동성당, 송도신도시, 청계천에 사용되며 완벽한 힐링공간을 제공했다. 또한 경기권을 벗어나 특히, 경상도 내에서는 대구스타디움과 동성로거리, 부산 APEC광장, 해운대 달맞이공원, 울산종합운동장 등 곳곳에 벽돌을 공급하며, 경상도 시민들에게도 낯설지 않은 편리성을 함께 제공하고 있는 중이다. 한편, 저탄소 녹색성장 기조와 친환경 건축 붐을 통해 ‘황토’는 미래형건축 재료로써 큰 주목을 받는 중이기에 삼한씨원은 미국, 호주, 유럽 전역 쪽으로의 활발한 해외진출도 계획하고 있다. 

한 회장은 그가 황토벽돌산업을 국내에 정착시킬 수 있었던 원동력으로 적극적인 R&D 투자를 꼽았다. 글로벌 시장경제 체제에서 경쟁력을 갖추기 위해 10년간 매년 10여명 이상의 직원들과 함께 벽돌 선진국인 유럽·미국·호주 등으로 견학을 다녀오며 세계 시장의 트렌드를 읽기 위해 노력했던 그는 “꾸준한 R&D 없이는 지역경제의 발전도 이루어질 수 없다”고 수차례 강조했다. 십년, 짧게는 오년 주기로 끊임없이 바뀌는 기술적 진보와 시장의 변화를 따라잡지 못한다면 기업의 생명은 고사하고 지역의 발전 역시 이어갈 수 없는 한삼화 회장이 이야기하는 경험으로부터 비롯된 굵직한 한마디인 것이다. 그는 마지막으로 “가장 기본적으로 잘못된 것은 빨리 버리고, 좋은 것은 누구의 것이든 받아들여야 합니다. 바로 이 지점이 변화와 혁신의 시작”이라며 대구시의 지속가능한 성장을 위해 힘쓸 것을 다짐했다.

There is a saying "From dust we came and to dust we shall return." In other words, all living things on earth live by eating those grown from the soil and return to the soil. Turning our traditional red clay into high value added industry
Headquartered in Daegu, Samhan Ceramics One invested KRW 45 billion in the factory in Yecheon County, North Gyeongsang Province, built in 1990 on a 181,818 square meter land in order to make 100% red clay bricks and paving blocks. Korean people tend to remind themselves of Europe when they hear the word 'brick'. To break the people's prejudice and to turn our traditional red clay into a high value added industry, Chairman Han boldly introduced the cutting edge facility of an Italian company 'Morando' to the factory. When the second factory was opened in 2003, he introduced yet another cutting edge facility from a German company 'Lingl'. Han then challenged to make better products than those Europe's and he succeeded. The products developed by Samhan Ceramics One proved to be better than those advanced countries' in terms of insulation, humidity, smell, far-infrared radiation and decomposition of CO2. In other words, they have excellent solidity, durability and resistibility. It is also notable that red clay contains silica, alumina, iron and magnesium and is known to help remove waste in our body. Samhan Ceramics One obtained ISO 9001 in 1997 as well as other quality approval marks such as Q, KS, GD, Inno-Biz, K and environmental labels and has never failed to pass the test taken place annually. Thanks to these great achievements, Samhan Ceramics One was chosen as the first 'Self-Quality Approval Enterprise' by the Korea Public Procurement Service.

Samhan Ceramics One runs its own 1mm Standard Error which is stricter than the 5mm of KS in order to make the best quality products in the world. The compression strength of more than 350㎏f/㎠ on construction bricks and of more than 700㎏f/㎠ on floor bricks, which is stronger than the US' ASTM Standard' also is the best in the world. You can actually find Samhan Ceramics One's red clay bricks in many places such as Doldam-gil near Deoksu Palace, Daehangno, Myeongdong Cathedral, Songdo New Town and Cheonggye Stream in Seoul as well as Daegu Stadium and Dongseong-ro, Busan APEC Plaza and Haeundae Dalmaji Park and Ulsan Stadium to name a few. With excellence in quality and outstanding achievement in business as a spring board, Smahan Ceramics One now is turning its eye to the markets in the US, Australia and Europe. Chairman Han pointed out 'continuous investment in R&D' as the biggest contributor to settling down firmly of the red clay brick industry in Korea; he has traveled with 10 of his staff around Europe, Australia and the US for the last 10 years to build an eye for reading the global trend. He said "Continuous investment in R&D is very important as it not only contributes to raising competitiveness of a company but to boosting the regional economy. We need to be wise to accept good business practices of others while learn from inefficient ones. This is the point where can be able to make change and innovation.
