Exploiting a new conceptual color material indicating strong acidic gas leaking by color changing

Prof. Kim, Tae-Kyung of the color resources convergence materials laboratory, Kyungpook National University
‘Color has power’. Most of information we get on the daily basis is visual information indeed. And, among them the color is transferring unique and different information and stimulation. Because of that, we figure out red is danger and yellow is warning like information we recognize and feel the emotional change like color therapy.

“Dangerous situation can enhance the initial countermeasure”
Prof. Kim, Tae-Kyung of fiber system engineering department of Kyungpook National University is an outstanding researcher with great results in fiber, coloring, pigment and convergence materials fields. He published a thesis ¡¸Synthetization and characterization of high-durability, super-sensitiveness strong acidic sensing and super-hydrophobic pigments¡¹ and other 80 more in many professional academic journals and has about 10 patents including ‘Monoazo coloring for acidic gas censoring’. Last 2012, he got awarded an excellent thesis of Fibers and Polymers area by Korea Textile Engineering Institute and in 2013, he gained a minister citation of Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and an academic award from the Korea Society of Dyers and Finishers in 2014. For a long period of time, Prof. Kim, Tae-Kyung who has been studying for fiber engineering, coloring and pigment engineering set up the color resources convergence materials laboratory and has been leading the team so far. Prof. Kim revealed, “Recently, we see a lot of leakage accidents of hydrochloric acid or hydrofluoric acid very often. It can make some serious loss of lives and to prevent that happening, it is all about the initial countermeasure in that gas leakage accidents. So, our team is researching pigments that are changing with detecting various external environments. Especially, we made coloring pigment that can sense micro strong acidic gas within a few seconds and are now working on application to the fiber.”

Currently, the pigment that the lab is developing can be printed and colored in the uniforms and has a great durability under extreme working conditions and also there is almost zero-degradation as strong points. Moreover, they have some proven data to show the power to sense strong alkalinity gas as well and expect to manufacture high-durability and super-sensitiveness clothing to be able to sense strong acid and alkali at the same time. This technology already has a patent registration and is ready to transfer to a company for commercializing by being introduced to many domestic and foreign tech expos.

Color materials technology to change a live safely and conveniently
Prof. Kim, Tae-Kyung explained, “The technology using colors and applying to things has a wide range of utilizing and can make a great synergy in many industries, so it is one of major future technologies. Especially, application studying and eco-friendly color materials developing based on physical and chemical characteristics of coloring materials are activated in many other countries.”

Prof. Kim has been working on optics that is a basis of color, dyes and pigments and textiles widely as well and developing the coloring measurement system by humane visualizing characteristic analysis. In addition, he is making appropriate coloring and dyeing skills to use to diverse high performance super fivers such as polypropylene fibers or aramid fibers and making some efforts to invent eco-friendly high quality and high performance pigments so as to get out of synthetic dyestuff depending on petro-chemistry in these days. Besides, he is concentrating on developing semi-synthetic bio-coloring materials, coloration technology to actually prevent the environmental pollution and fiber application technology utilizing conductible materials as a basic technology of wearable computer and smart textile technology, which is regarded as the future cutting-edge technology.
The advance of the color technology is a critical factor to enable to change a lot of parts of a human lifestyle since humans have to see many different colors every day, inevitably. Prof. Kim, Tae-Kyung who is making an effort to change our lives more convenient and more eco-friendly throughout the convergence and discovering coloring materials and constant application study and his color resources convergence materials laboratory. Even at the moment, they are doing the best for that and we expect their time and energy would be back to us as a good consequence.
