Advanced sensor technology that connects device and Human
“Concentrating on training top-level human resources in Advanced sensor who     will lead the future global technology market”
Kong, Seong ho, head of Kyungpook National Univ. Education & Research Center for Advanced Sensor Technology

Sensor, an essential element in the era for Internet of Things
IoT technology representing today’s smart society is focused on maximizing human convenience by forming intellectual relationships of all things around us and exchanging needed information. Though Advanced sensor technology is considered as an essential base technology for realizing the age of IoT, Korea's lack of ability in original technology makes us depend more on those in advanced countries.

Accordingly, Kyungpook National Univ. established ‘Education & Research Center for Advanced Sensor Technology’ to train top-level professionals holding master’s degree and over who will equipped with knowledge in advanced sensing technology, designing advanced sensor, its process and production.

Kong, Seong Ho, head of the Center, said, “Advanced senor technology is currently being applied to most spheres in close relationship with human beings, including environment, protection against disasters, medicine, automobile, mobile, aerospace and robot with significantly increasing demands. Our Center is intended to spread the understanding of advanced sensor industry while producing talents equipped with expertise and practical ability in relevant fields, for contribution to securing global competitiveness of our domestic sensor industry.”

The Center has been selected for the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy project of Training human resources for enhanced advanced sensor industry, which is also participated in by Korea Univ. and Kwangwoon Univ. While the project is specialized for environment and protection against disasters (Kyungpook National Univ.), automobile and mobile (Korea Univ.) and medicine and healthcare (Kwangwoon Univ), partner institutions like Seoul Techno Park, Kyungpook National Univ. Semi-conductor Convergence Technology Institute and Daegu Nano-Convergence Center are supporting for process technology, including packaging, and developing nano-industrial parts technology.

Cultivating customized human resources with combined theory and practice to industrial demands
After opening the graduate course for advanced sensor, the Center is endeavoring to train professionals in sensor technology by composing advanced sensor curriculum in the course. Participating graduate school students are given not only education from their affiliated college but also broad education specialized by institution through e-learning. Besides, by carrying out degree-connected customized advanced sensor project based on the corporate demand for R&D technology, they are going to build practical ability in linkage to the scene of sensor-related enterprises.

Currently carrying out the first-year project, the Center is directing its energies toward promoting ‘Sensor technology academy,’ which is the program for helping students acquire and experience technologies needed for developing actual sensors by their visiting labs engaged in related studies as well as learn basic theoretical knowledge. Center head Kong, Seong Ho said, “While most existing educational programs are restricted to theoretical education, ours are properly balanced between theory and practice with the strength of suitability for training practice-oriented talents equipped with expertise.”

Currently, advanced countries such as the US, Europe and Japan are waging competition to secure advanced senor-related original technology investing tremendous capital and efforts since long time ago. Domestically, however, it has not been a big concern due to the characteristics of its long-tail market. So to inform graduate school students about the importance of advanced sensor and increase their interest in it, the Center is proceeding with diverse support programs, including support in scholarship, association for technological exchange and customized research projects connected to degrees.

Finally, Center head Kong asked for positive interest and support from the central government and local government, saying, “Recently, growing interest in IoT is activating related enterprises and research institutions with increasing demand for related professionals. To rear top-level professionals as a prime mover for industrial development, it is essential to secure adequate budgets.” He also predicted that development of advanced sensor technology will set a foothold for domestic industries focused on semi-conductor, automobiles and mobiles to expand into diverse spheres including medicine, space-air, etc. In our reality of smart society, it is expected that Kyungpook National Univ. Education & Research Center for Advanced Sensor Technology will be in place as the hub for domestic advanced sensor-related research and home for global talents to lead the world.
