빅데이터 시대의 핵심인재, ‘데이터 사이언티스트’ 양성

최근 온갖 뉴스 매체에서 빅데이터의 중요성을 부각하고 있다. 실제로 우리가 매일 접하는 경제, 사회, 과학, 의학 등 다양한 분야에서 매일 방대한 양의 데이터가 쏟아져 나오고 있다. 이러한 수많은 데이터를 미래에 대한 정확한 분석과 예측의 유용한 척도로 쓰기 위해서‘통계’라는 학문이 필수불가결하다.

통계학·컴퓨터학·수학 분야의 융합 교육
통계학은 미지의 자연현상과 현대의 복잡한 사회현상에 대한 자료와 정보를 수집·이용함으로써 불확실한 사실에 대해 과학적인 판단을 내릴 수 있는 방법을 제시하는 학문이다. 오늘날 통계학은 우리의 일상생활에서 흔히 접하는 일기예보, 여론조사, 흡연의 유해성 분석 등에서 부터 수요예측, 물가지수의 산출, 의약품의 효능 분석, 스포츠 과학 등에 이르기까지 수많은 분야에 걸쳐 중요한 역할을 담당하고 있다. 이에 경북대학교 자연과학대학 통계학과에서는 통계학의 원리와 통계적 응용방법을 습득하여 정보화 사회에서 필연적으로 요구되는 통계 전문인력을 양성하고, 특히 컴퓨터를 이용한 올바른 정보수집 능력과 다양한 정보 분석 방법을 교육함으로써 조직체의 의사 결정에 선도적 역할을 담당할 수 있는 인재 양성에 주력하고 있다.

통계학과의 커리큘럼은 통계학의 이론과 응용에 필요한 수학적 개념을 배우는 ‘통계수학’, 확률 분포와 통계적 추론에 대한 기본개념을 익히는 ‘수리통계학’, 변수들 간의 함수 관계를 규명함으로써 모형적합과 예측에 사용하는 ‘회귀분석 및 실험’, 이론적 접근 이후의 수치적 계산을 구현하는 ‘통계계산 및 실험’ 등의 과목으로 구성되어 있다. 이에 더해 올해부터는 소프트웨어를 기반으로 한 통계학 전문지식의 융합을 위한 교과과정인 ‘빅데이터 분석 및 실험’ 과목을 새롭게 구성하여, 최근 화두가 되고 있는 빅데이터 분석 및 활용을 위한 전문인력 양성에 주력하고 있다.

“통계학이 미래 사회의 방향을 결정할 것”
1976년 개설되어 올해로 40주년을 맞이한 경북대학교 통계학과는 오랜 교육과 연구를 통해 축적된 깊이 있는 전문 지식을 바탕으로 정보화 사회가 요구하는 통계 전문가 양성을 위한 폭넓은 커리큘럼을 통해 수요 맞춤형 창의인재 양성에 매진하고 있다. 특히 학과는 우수 대학원생들이 학부 학생들에게 주요 전공과목에 대한 정기적인 튜터링을 실시함으로써 전공과목의 학업능력 향상과 학업적응력 증진을 위해 노력하고 있으며, 하계와 동계 방학기간을 활용해 SAS국제공인자격증 취득을 위한 특강을 개최하고있다. 또한 다양한 분야에서 활동하고 있는 졸업생과의 만남을 통해 조기 진로탐색 분위기 조성과 전공분야에 대한 폭넓은 이해를 돕고 있고, 인적 네트워크 구축을 통한 차별화된 진로설계의 방향도 제시하고 있다.

학과장을 역임하고 있는 이경은 교수는 “정보화 사회의 특징은 수많은 정보가 끊임없이 생산되고, 서로 교환되고 있다는 점입니다. 통계학은 이러한 시대에서 사회 전반에 걸쳐 보다 나은 결과를 위한 의사결정에 유용하게 활용되고 있습니다. 앞으로 정보 처리와 분석능력을 갖춘 통계 전문인력의 수요가 점차 증가하리라는 점에서 학과의 전망은 매우 밝다고 생각됩니다”라고 밝혔다. 실제로 통계학은 포브스(Fobes)와 하버드 비지니스 리뷰에서 21세기 가장 유망한 직업 분야로 꼽히기도 했다. 현재 졸업생들은 학계 및 교육계 뿐 아니라 정부 및 공공기관, 금융·보험·컴퓨터 등 통계 관련 기업, 대기업과 연구기관 등 다양한 분야로 진출하여 그 활동영역을 넓혀가고 있다. 

이경은 교수는 “데이터의 활용 가능성이 확대되면서 ‘데이터 사이언티스트(Data scientist)’의 중요성이 점차 높아지고 있다”면서, “데이터 사이언티스트의 자질은 논리적·창의적 사고와 컴퓨터 활용 능력 그리고 융합적 전문지식을 갖추는 데서 온다고 생각합니다. 우리 학과에서는 학생들이 인문학적, 수리과학적 사고능력을 겸비함과 동시에 리더십과 도전정신, 진취성과 창의성을 가진 열정적인 인재로 자라날 수 있도록 돕고자 합니다”라고 말했다. 현재를 분석함으로써 미래를 예측하는 학문인 통계학, 경북대학교 통계학과를 통해 배출된 인재들이 미래 빅데이터 시대를 선도하는 글로벌 리더로 자라나게 되기를 기대한다.

Fusion of statistics, computer science and maths
Statistics is the study of the collection, analysis, interpretation, presentation, and organization of data covering many areas such as weather, poll, medical research & effect, demanding forecasting, price index and sports science. To create theses talented 'data scientists', the Department of Statistics of College of Natural Sciences at Kyungpook National University has exerted its effort for many years. Its innovative curriculum includes mathematical statistics, regression analysis & experimentation and statistic computation & experimentation. Early this year, the department introduced a new course 'big data analysis & experimentation' in accordance with current trend to foster talented specialists in the field. 

"Statistics will decide the direction of our future"
Kyungpook National University was established in 1976. The university boasts 40 years history and excellent research and has fostered many talented students who are spreading their capabilities in various fields in our society at the moment. The university's excellent Tutoring Programme especially encourages graduate students to give mentoring to undergraduates of the same major in order to maximize the special knowledge in the field. The university also helps students obtain a certificate of SAS (Statistics Analysis System) with special lecture designed for it. In addition, the alumni meet students on a regular basis and provide consulting on career path and the network when necessary. Lee Gyeong-eun, Dean of the department says "Information is constantly made and exchanged in the information-oriented society. The role of statistics is to provide better and/or precise analysis on various subjects. As the society develops, so will the demand for manpower in statistics." In fact, Fobes and Harvard Business Review pointed out Statistics as one of the most promising studies in the 21st century. Lee continues "The areas where big data can be applied are ever expanding in today's society. This naturally means that there also is a great demand for 'data scientists' who will satisfy the demand of those areas. Data scientists need to have ability to think things logically yet creatively in addition to excellent computer skills and maths. On top of this, they need to be equipped with leadership and challenging spirit.
