Cradle of the Glocul talents leading the world food industry

Prof. Lee, Sang-Han of the horticultural food convergence glocul talents project group of Kyungpook National University

The scale of the world is over 6.4 trillion dollars and 1.3 billion of people are working on this huge business. And this is agriculture. Because of that, agricultural advanced countries like USA, Canada, Australia and Netherlands are doing lots of investments on R&D in order to lead the world market. For that, the horticultural food convergence glocul talents project group of Kyungpook National University is spending lots of time and money to breed up creative talents who will lead the high-technology related to gardening food and globalization.

“Need the enforcement of competitiveness of horticultural food resources”
The world agricultural market is running for the globalization. Already plenty of relevant technology in variety has come out so, the potential power is regarded highly. However, on the contrary to this work trend, national horticultural food industry is facing a big trouble. Since people’s eating pattern became more westernized, our original horticultural food consumption has decreased a lot. Also, cheap Chinese food products have been brought as bulk so the price competitiveness is getting weak for real. In addition, the change of climate by global warming influences on the productivity of agricultural industry immensely. For that, the horticulture convergence glocul talents project group (CK-1) of Kyungpook National University organized to study and complete the missions of the globalization considering nutrition, favorite, function, convenience with typical horticultural specialized procuts such as apple, grape, peach, persimmon, peach, pear, date, oriental melon, strawberry, melon, garlic, pepper, burdock, Chinese yam, lotus root, Siberian Ginseng, schizandra of Daegu in Gyeongbul region and besides, they concentrated on train convergence talents who are creative with global ability to lead import and manufactural system and production so on.

Prof. Lee, Sang-Han of food engineering department who is leading this business team said, “Daegu, Kyungpook is the area has a lot of amazingly qualified horticultural food resources. To use these eco-friendly agricultural products in many ways and to make additional value for that, it needs to study and develop relevant technology.”

Specializing the local and Training creative talents with global competence
The curriculum in the team is separated by 2 big categories such as ‘KH Track’ based on horticultural products depending knowledge and ‘HF Track’ based on based on horticultural products depending import. KH Track has 8 subjects in total including the diversity of horticultural products, horticultural harvest experimental experience, and vegetable product study and HF Track has 13 subjects in total including horticultural products, food resources, food engineering experimental experience and horticultural materials study etc. Prof. Lee, Sang-Han explained, “Our team is trying to develop food and drug materials of horticultural foods based on abundant horticultural resources and create the synergy of training students. Also, to keep up with today’s food globalization rapidly, we are completing a characterized education at the same time.”
Prof. Lee, Sang-Han’s passion like that comes from his creed that overcoming the crisis of Korean horticultural food industry and dealing with that wisely will bring out the country competitiveness. He has been worked on that for so long and gained 15 times of awards including a great science technology paper, 200 of science paper in domestic and foreign. Especially he has 60 patents and 10 of technology transfer as a result. Moreover, last January, he found out that the material SESAMOL in sesame seeds, which is autoxidation functions for whitening because it restraints melamine producing and in March, he announces omeprazole that has been used as a medicine in stomach ulcer functions like that too. This is suggesting the possibility of making cosmetics out of for drugs and foods. Therefore, his study has criticized to be able to research the breakthrough with different many horticultural foods for the future.

Prof. Lee emphasized this crisis can be a chance all the more. By solidifying a national horticultural food industry and strengthening the competitiveness, we can make our close countries like China and Japan into a humongous market in his thought. And this driving power is to breed up superior talents with a global competence and a local characterization, according to him. For that, we hope his effort to grow Korea’s power to go to the world would be made with a better and more fruition.
