인류의 미래를 바꿀 인공지능 기반 의학 진단 메커니즘 연구

최근 벌어진 알파고와 이세돌의 대결은 인공지능 기술의 놀라운 발전을 보여주며 전 세계를 떠들썩하게 만들었다. 이처럼 미래사회 변화를 주도하게 될 인공지능 기술의 발전이 가장 두드러지게 나타나고 있는 곳은 바로 헬스케어 분야이다. 생명과 건강을 다루는 헬스케어 분야의 인공지능 기술 도입은 인류의 삶을 더욱 건강하고 안전하게 변화시킬 것으로 전망된다.

인공지능이 바꾸는 미래의 의료
계명대학교 인공지능 컴퓨터진단 연구실은 인공지능 기반의 의학적 컴퓨터 진단 매커니즘에 대해 연구하고 있다. 연구실을 이끌고 있는 이종하 교수는 “인공지능의 분야가 다양해지면서 의료 현장에도 도입될 시점이 눈앞으로 다가왔습니다. 특히 의료현장은 생명과 건강을 다룬다는 측면에서 다른 분야보다 정확도가 더욱 중요합니다. 저희 연구실에서는 미개척 의료분야를 발굴하고 연구함으로써 인간의 삶의 질을 향상시키는 것을 궁극적인 목표로 하고 있습니다”라고 밝혔다.

인공지능 컴퓨터진단 연구실은 바이오 빅데이터 애널리틱스 연구, 초고화질 광학 기반 암 영상 진단 연구, 머신러닝 기반 인공지능 컴퓨터 진단 연구, 다채널 바이오신호 기반 웰니스 플랫폼 연구, 만성질환 관리를 위한 무선충전 가능한 인체 삽입형 초소형 센서 연구, 사물 인터넷의 빅 데이터 처리 및 머신러닝을 통한 바이오 데이터 스트림 마이닝 알고리즘 개발, 헤테로지니어스 바이오 데이터 통합 진단 플랫폼 연구 등을 주요 연구 분야로 하고 있다.

그 중에서도 현재 ‘유방암 초기증상의 자가진단을 정량화하고 병변을 진단/예측하기 위한 촉각 영상화 방법 연구’, ‘일반인(직장인)의 균형 잡힌 웰니스 증진을 위한 응용 서비스 플랫폼 구축’, ‘만성질환 관리를 위한 인체 삽입형 생리기능 자동감시 시스템 기술 개발’, ‘혈류량 측정이 가능한 혈관문합기 개발’ 등의 프로젝트를 진행 또는 참여하고 있으며, 삼성전자 종합기술원 등과 산학 프로젝트를 진행하고 있다. 이 교수는 “이러한 연구는 美 뉴욕대 NYU WIRELESS Group 등 국내외 대학 및 연구소와의 공동연구로 진행되고 있으며, 긴밀한 협력관계 구축을 통해 시너지 효과를 창출하고 있습니다”라고 설명했다.

“이종 데이터의 통합 분석을 통한 의료 혁신 다가올 것”
이종하 교수에 따르면 현재 세계 인공지능 의료관련 연구는 상당한 수준에 이르렀으며, 2~3년 내 엄청난 혁신이 이루어질 것으로 전망된다. 특히 진단/치료/예방/관리 등 의료 전 분야에 걸친 IT 혁신은 의료 데이터양의 폭발적 증가를 가져왔다. 이 교수는 “2020년 의료 데이터는 84만 페타바이트(1 PB=100만 GB)에 달할 것으로 예상되고 있습니다. 이는 현재 구글 데이터 총량이 1 PB 수준인 것으로 볼 때 엄청난 양이라고 볼 수 있습니다”라고 말했다. 연구소에서는 이러한 흐름에 발맞춰 미국 영상의학회가 제정한 BI-RADS 분류법을 디지털화하고 자동 계산함으로써 초음파 영상의 영상학적인 이상 소견을 기록하고, 이를 인공지능 알고리즘으로 분석하여 병변을 진단할 수 있는 ‘유방 초음파 검사를 위한 컴퓨터 진단 시스템’을 개발하고 있다. 또한 이 교수는 바이오메디털 빅데이터 분석 결과 적용을 통해 의료 전 분야에서의 인공지능 기반 맞춤 의료 실현을 위한 연구를 수행하고 있다. 먼저 기존 단일소스 기반 진단 대비 정확도를 향상시킨 다중소스 기반 입체적 진단 연구를 진행하고 있으며, 원천적 수준의 질병 예방 및 맞춤형 치료 실현을 위한 유전자 기반 발병 메커니즘 규명 연구를 진행하고 있다. 그리고 상시 관리 및 위험 이벤트 사전 예측을 위해 다양한 센서를 이용한 질환 관리 및 이벤트 전조 현상 감지를 통한 위험 상황 사전 대비 연구에도 매진하고 있다. 

이 교수는 “진정한 융합은 학문 간의 경계를 없애고 서로의 학문에 대한 다양한 의견을 공유하는 것에서 출발합니다”라며, “학문의 본질에 대한 고민과 인간을 위한 학문으로의 접근이 이루어질 때 새로운 가치를 창조할 수 있는 하모니가 만들어지리라 생각합니다”라고 강조했다. 인류의 삶을 보다 풍요롭게 만들기 위한 인공지능 연구에 앞장서고 있는 이들의 노력이 보다 값진 성과로 열매 맺게 되기를 바란다.

Medical diagnosis mechanism study based on artificial intelligence changing the future

Recently, there was a big issue about the match of Alphago and Lee Se-Dol. From that, people were surprised by the AI technology’s amazing development and it made lots of topics and verbal rumors as well. Like this, the AI has been lots of progressed and the area the AI is prominently showing an amazing performance is the health care. The introduction of AI technology into the health care service area dealing with life and health is considered to change the human life healthier and safer. 

Future medical care changed by the AI
The artificial intelligence computer diagnosis laboratory, Keimyung University is studying for a medical diagnosis mechanism study based on artificial intelligence. Prof. Lee Jong-Ha said, “As the AI area is getting more diverse, we are looking forward to seeing this system takes place at medical hospitals soon. Especially, medical field is regarded to be a more important place in terms of accuracy rather than other places because it takes care of life and health. Our lab is having an ultimate goal to make the human’s life have a better quality by discovering an unexplored medical field and studying for that on and on.” 

The artificial intelligence computer laboratory has been working on many things like a bio big data analytics study, a cancer diagnosis study based on ultra-definition optics, a wellness platform study based on a multi-channel bio-signal, big data handling out of IoT, a bio data stream mining algorism out of machine running, and a hetero genius bio data integrated diagnosis platform study as a major area. Among them, currently, they are working on many subjects like a study on touch sensation visualization method for making self-test of the early stage of breast cancer quantifiable and predict/diagnose lesion, building up for the applied service platform to make the promotion of wellness with the balance of ordinary people (esp. workers), developing the human insertion type physiological function automatic censoring system for a chronic disease management and so on. They are on progress or joining the projects in different ways and also doing the industrial-educational cooperation project with SAMSUNG advanced institute of technology. Prof. Lee explained, “Like that study, we are working with domestic and foreign universities and institutes like NYU WIRELESS Group, NYU in the states and we are trying to make some synergy effect out of a close cooperation connection.” 

“Medical innovation will come throughout a different kind of data”
According to Prof. Lee Jong-Ha, today’s world AI technology comes up to a great success and remarkable level and within a few years, it will be an excellent innovation to be made. Especially, IT innovation covering all the medical parts including diagnosis/treatment/management has brought up to increase the medical data explosively. 

Prof. Lee said, “The date in 2020 would be up to 840-thousand petabyte (1 PB=1,000,000 GB), expectedly. Comparing the google data, its total data is just 1 PB so, that amount cannot be compared.” The lab is recording all the abnormal finding of ultrasonic images and analyses by the AI algorism so as to be able to have the diagnosis system for breast cancer ultrasonic test. Also, Prof. Lee is working on the study for a customized medical realization based on the AI in all the medical areas throughout applying the bio medical big data analysis. First of all, he is studying on a three-dimensional diagnosis by a multi-source base, which is improved accuracy compared a sing-source base and working on the outbreak mechanism investigation study based on DNA, which is for a prevention of disease as a basic level and customized treatment. And more, he is focusing on study of the initial countermeasure of the disease management out of using various sensors and the regular management, danger event prediction out of event sign censoring. 

Prof. Lee emphasized, “A true convergence can be started from getting rid of boundaries of between learnings and sharing many different opinions and ideas one and another. I think the harmony to create a new value will be completed when we think over the essence of learnings and do approach for the human as learning.” For that, we hope their effort to lead the AI study for making the human life better and qualified would make a great result.
