[Zen Master Ilbong Sunghae]
Ilbong holds a publication party for his book '40 Years of Mission Work’
Spreading Buddha's teaching to the world

BTN TV Chairman Suk Sungwoo attends the party
40 Years of Mission Work includes 17 years mission in Korea and 23 years in the world

The publication party for Zen Master Ilbong Sunghae's '40 Years of Mission Work' attracted a great attention from the Buddhist world. Many of those who possess Ilbong's work were invited to the party as special guests. BTN (Buddhist True Network) TV Chairman Monk Suk Sungwoo said at the party "I've known Ilbong more than 40 years. He is energetic and has a strong sense of responsibility and exerted his utmost effort in spreading Buddha's teaching to the world. He is a master researcher of the Sutra of the Lotus and of Seonseo (Buddhist books). The style of penmanship is difficult to achieve without developing a manner of one's own style. I sincerely congratulate Ilbong." The speech was followed by CEO Jo Suk-hyeon of Homi Art Shop who said "As a result of negligence in Chinese letter studying, many young people nowadays cannot even write their name in Chinese character. This is very important as we have to communicate with 1.3 billion Chinese people. Ilbong's works contain humanitarianism, benevolence, the Three Bonds and Five Relationships in Confucianism and morality, and I decided to give a helping hand." Jo and his wife Kim Gyeong-hee have provided a support for Ilbong both materially and morally. They let him use the 3rd and 4th floors of Homi Building for free for 4 years. Chairman Lee Hyeong-sul of The Korean Senior Citizens Association's National Buddhist Association said "I've know him for a long time. He has achieved many great things in spreading Buddha's teaching and I wish him health and prosperity." Monk Jayong also said "He devoted his whole life to spreading Buddha's teaching to the world. Only a few monks can do calligraphy like Sunghae. I wish him health and hope that he will continue his effort in spreading Buddha's teaching."

Zen Master Ilbong Sunghae unveils his 10 meter long calligraphy
At the publication party, Ilbong unveiled his 10 meter long calligraphy meaning 'Koreans living overseas is territorial expansion'. Ilbong wrote this at his performance at Founding Day Reception of the Federation of Korea Buddhist Sectors' Celebrity Association (232 sectors) held at Andong City Hall in July 2013. Ilbong said "I have a strong will to make the whole world as the stage for Koreans. There are 77 million Koreans in the world (40 millions in South Korea, 30 millions in North Korea and 7 millions overseas). If the first generation immigrates, the second can obtain a citizenship and the third can lead the nation. We can pursue our dream and national pride in this way and Koreans will be admired from the world."

Director Kang Young-sook visits Ilbong's Work Center
Covering the Korean Buddhist history with national pride

Those who could not be able to attend the publication party paid a visit to the Ilbong's Work Center. These included Chairman Lee Hee-gu who gives a support to Monk Jinjae (Chairman of Korea-Japan Buddhist Exchange Association and Zhongzong of the Jogye Order), Chairwoman Jo Sun-hae of Geo-Young (medicine and medical equipment company) and Director Kang Young-sook of Yejiwon who teaches the wives of dignitaries our tradition and decorum. Ilbong's '40 Years of Mission Work' covers the Korean Buddhist history and Ilbong put the national pride in the book. Visitors praised Ilbong's devotion and achievement and Ilbong felt really worth. He said "Rich culture and art will make Korea prosper. I have studied Buddhism as a monk and calligraphy as an artist. I hope more companies and public institutions will hang a quality art work on a wall of their buildings and also more people will appreciate the true value of our culture and art."

Ilbong establishes Tamlasunwon (Buddhist education center) and leads building Mahasunsa (Buddhist temple)
"I will always help Koreans living abroad to promote national pride"

Ilbong was born in Hapcheon County, South Gyeongsang Province. He was taught by Kim Il-do at Beomeo Temple in Busan and was enlightened as Hadongsan. He served as Chief Monk of Chunwang Temple and established Tamlasunwon in Jeju Island with the will of spreading Buddha's teaching and making the island a paradise by building as many temples as possible. He currently is preparing to build Mahasunsa in Myeongwol-ri, Hallim-eub, Jeju City. Ilbong said that he would do his best until the temple was completed.

Ilbong showed an interest in paintings and calligraphic works in his early age and has created many works for the last 60 years. He put Buddhist value and the spirit of oriental classics in his works and established his name in the field. He held an invitation exhibition in the US and established Bulkuk Temple in New York in 1988. He became President of ICCBB (International Council for the Celebration of Buddha’s Birthday in New York) and led various Buddhist events including lantern procession on Buddha's birthday at Square Park every year. His activities have been appeared on media and his name was listed in 'Who's Who in Korea' and 'The People in Modern History'. He gave special lectures on western and oriental religions at Harvard University and on cutting edge technology and Buddhist paradise at MIT and hosted Mind Training Performance supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2013. He currently is serving as President of the Korean Headquarters of World Movement of Recovering Korean Sentiment. He said “I will spread Korean Buddhism, which embraces the whole universe, to the world. I also want to be a spiritual haven for Koreans living abroad and will always help and encourage them to have a national pride."
