도심의 바람을 녹색 에너지로 만드는, 풍력발전의 진정한 혁신 이뤄내

화석연료를 변환시켜 이용하거나 햇빛, 물, 지열, 강수, 생물유기체 등을 포함하는 재생 가능한 에너지를 변환시켜 이용하는 에너지를 말하는 ‘신재생에너지’는 특히 지속가능한 에너지 공급체계를 지속할 수 있어 전세계 유수의 대기업과 강소 기업들로부터 연구와 제품 개발이 끊이지 않고 있다. 산업통상자원부 주형환 장관이 1월 말 가진 간담회에서 “세계 신재생에너지시장 선점과 국내 신재생에너지 투자 및 보급 확대를 적극적으로 지원하겠다”는 뜻을 밝힌 것처럼, 국내 신재생에너지 분야의 시장 규모는 놀라운 속도로 확대되고 있다.

도심형 풍력발전기의 보급∙수출 앞장서는 국내 대표 기업

2005년 설립된 (주)하이에너지코리아(이하 하이에너지코리아)는 전력의 수요가 많은 도심지역에서도 원활히 작동되어 전력을 생산할 수 있는 도심형 풍력발전기의 보급 및 수출을 통해 대한민국의 소형 풍력발전 기술을 세계에 널리 전파한 바 있다. 강석준 대표는 “하이에너지코리아의 풍력발전기는 접근성이 최대의 강점이다. 기존 풍력발전기에서 발생했던 120db 수준의 소음을 완벽하게 차단하였으며 최소 5~6m/s의 바람을 이용해 전기를 생산할 수 있었던 한계를 1.2m/s까지 낮췄다. 서울 도심의 평균 풍속이 2.5m/s임을 감안했을 때, 이제는 도심에서도 풍력발전이 가능하게 된 것이다”라고 말했다.

장기간의 연구 결과를 통해 탄생한 하이에너지코리아의 풍력발전기는 로터(중심축)와 블레이드(날개), 변환장치인 제너레이터 등 각 부분에서 놀라운 효율을 자랑한다. 기어와 코일이 없는 영구자석(PMG) 형태의 제너레이터를 장착하여 미세한 바람에도 작동할 수 있게 했으며, 마찰이 발생하지 않아 진동과 소음 문제까지 해결했다. 그 결과 하이에너지코리아는 지난 2011년 에너지관리공단으로부터 신재생에너지설비 인증을 통과하였을 뿐 아니라, 풍력발전기 관련 국내 특허 제 10-1101399호를 비롯해 다양한 특허를 보유하고 있다. 

대형 풍력발전기의 단점 보완하여 응용산업에 집중해

국내 풍력발전 업체의 대부분이 전기를 대량으로 만들어 수송하는 전력시장에 집중한 반면 하이에너지코리아는 실생활에 접목할 수 있는 응용산업 분야에 강점을 갖고 있다. 설립 초기부터 응용산업 분야에 적극 투자하여 30여 종의 제품을 개발하였는데, 가정∙학교∙통신∙보안∙건설∙발전∙소방∙재난감시 등 그 적용 분야 역시 다양하다. 상승풍 또는 환기구를 이용해 발생하는 바람을 전기에너지로 치환하는 하이에너지코리아의 소형 발전시스템은 홈플러스와의 협약을 통해 일산킨텍스점, 남양주 진접점, 부천 여월점 등 많은 곳에 설치되어 있다.

또한 지난 2008년 전라남도 새만금 앞바다 십이동파도섬에 SK텔레콤 무선기지국 발전설비를 설치하는 쾌거를 달성하였고, 이 소식이 KBS 뉴스를 통해 방영된 바 있다. 당시 통신사 측에서는 지속되는 민원으로 기지국 설치를 고려하였으나 송전설비를 유지 관리하는 비용이 만만치 않아 난색을 표했다. 대안으로 태양광시설을 설치했지만 소금을 머금은 바닷가의 바람 때문에 기판이 부식되는 등 지속적인 관리가 필요한 단점이 있었다. 여러 어려움에도 불구하고 하이에너지코리아가 설치한 소형풍력발전기는 현재까지도 사고 없이 전력을 공급하고 있으며, 이 밖에도 전국 56개 도서지역 중 70여 개소에 중계기 설치를 완료한 바 있다.

간편한 설비로 설치 가능한 하이브리드 가로등 주목받아

하이에너지코리아의 하이브리드 가로등은 송전설비의 접근이 어려운 도서지역에까지 간편하게 설치할 수 있는 장점이 있다. 강 대표는 “우리나라는 전기 부족 현상을 고질적으로 겪고 있다. 하지만 실제로 전기의 양이 부족한 것이 아니라 낮과 밤에 사용하는 전력의 차이, 지구온난화현상으로 에어컨이나 전열기 사용이 늘어나면서 발생한 전기 피크사용량의 증가 등이 가장 큰 원인이다. 전국 6천만 개의 가로등을 자가발전 형식으로 교체한다면 대한민국 전력의 15% 가량을 감당할 수 있을 것이다”라고 말한다. 하이에너지코리아는 현재 서울 광화문을 비롯해, 전라북도 익산시와 충청도, 미국, 필리핀 등 세계 각지에 하이브리드 가로등을 꾸준히 공급하고 있다.

하이에너지코리아는 국내 소형발전 분야의 99%를 차지하는 놀라운 성과를 보이고 있으며, 최근 개발한 무인보안감시시스템은 국방부에 납품을 진행하고 있다. 얼마 전 한국도로공사와 협약을 체결해 울산-포항 간 고속도로에 하이에너지코리아의 가로등이 설치되어 있으며, 이를 통해 고속도로의 제트기류를 활용한 전기 생산이 가능해질 전망이다. 또 한국전력공사 나주 신사옥에 하이에너지코리아의 풍력발전시스템이 유일하게 적용되어 있으며, 한국동서발전, 한국중부발전, 한국남동발전, 한국수자원공사, 한국지역난방공사, 한국농어촌공사를 비롯해 삼성, 한화, SK텔레콤, LG CNS, 포스코엔지니어링 등에 독점적 거래를 이어가고 있다. 이 밖에도 차이나텔레콤과 미국의 에릭슨 등 세계 유력 기업과의 교류 역시 활발하다.

작년 3월 중국 공장, 올해 미국 법인 설립하며 활발한 활동 기대

하이에너지코리아는 설립 두 달 만에 발 빠르게 중국 현지 공장을 설립하며 내수시장보다는 상대적으로 바람 자원이 풍부한 해외시장을 활용하여 수출에 집중하였다. 이로 인해 2009년 일본 와세다 대학과 수직축 풍력발전 관련 공동특허출원을 이뤄냈을 뿐 아니라 2010년 국내 풍력발전업계에서는 최초로 중국 북경 기술자산평가 인증을 받았다. 2014년에는 카자흐스탄 현지 법인을 설립하고 작년 3월에는 중국 웨이하이 지역에 생산 라인을 가동하기 시작하였다. 대지 6만 평, 건평 3만 5천 평의 공장에서 대량생산체계를 완벽하게 갖춘 것이다. 또한 올해 미국 법인을 설립하여 더욱 활발한 활동을 예고하고 있다.

하이에너지코리아는 FC바르셀로나와의 협력을 통해 에티오피아에 에너지 생산 파워플랜트를 직접 마련한 바 있으며, 한화그룹과 함께 이라크 재건사업에서 전력공급을 담당하기도 했다. 강 대표는 “향후 관광형 발전단지 사업도 적극적으로 전개해갈 것이며, 전국 지사체제를 통해 지역에 대한 접근성 역시 높여갈 예정이다. 돈을 많이 벌고 실적을 많이 올리는 것만이 다가 아니라, 우리만의 시장을 어느 정도까지 만들 수 있느냐가 관건이다”라고 말한다. 그는 “우리 모두는 위대한 정신을 가진 탐험가들이다. 직원들에게도 항상 강조하듯이, 현실적으로 지구의 미래를 생각하고 참여할 수 있는 하이에너지코리아가 되려고 한다”는 뜻을 밝혔다.

Established in 2005, Hi-energy Korea (HK) has significantly contributed to spreading Korea's small wind power generation technology to the world. HK has supplied and exported Urban Wind Power Generation that can generate electricity in the city center where a considerable amount of energy are consumed. CEO Kang said "Accessibility is the biggest advantage of our wind power generator. It completely cut around 120 db noise of the existing wind power generators and it can also generate electricity with 1.2m/s wind speed unlike the existing 5 to 6m/s. This is such a great feat considering the fact that the average wind speed in Seoul is 2.5m/s which means that we can now generate electricity in the city center." The rotor, blades and converting device of the HK's wind power generator boast a great efficiency and it is designed with PMG (permanent magnet) without gear and coil so that it can generate energy even in the mild wind. The generator also does not make friction and noise. Thanks to this innovation, Hi-energy Korea obtained a certificate of New Energy Facilities from the Korea Energy Agency in 2011 and various patents including a domestic patent No. 10-1101399.

While most wind power generation companies are focusing on mass production and transmission, Hi-energy Korea shows a great strength in its application industry. HK invested in that field from the early stage of running the business and has so far developed 30 products which can be used at home and schools and for communication, security, construction, power generation, fire prevention and disaster control. The small wind power system of HK is particularly innovative as it can generate electricity with an upward current of the wind or a vent. For its efficiency, HomePlus signed a business agreement with HK and the generator is currently installed in many HomePlus stores nationwide. HK also installed generating unit in the SK Telecom wireless base station on Sipidongpado Island on the coast of Gunsan City and KBS broadcast the news. Apart from the generator on island which is working more efficiently than any other generators, HK so far has installed repeater in 70 bases of 56 regions nationwide.

HK's hybrid street lamp is ideally designed for the use in remote areas where a large power transmitter cannot be installed. Kang said "Korea is often experiencing electricity shortage. This is because there's a difference between the amount of energy used in day and night and the increased usage in the peak time. If we change the 60 million street lamps in Korea to self-power generator type, Korea can save about 15% of the total energy consumption." With its excellence and efficiency of the lamp, HK currently is supplying the lamp not only in Korea but to the markets in the Philippines and the US. According to a report, HK shares 99% the domestic small power generation market and is providing its recent development of manless security and monitoring system to the Ministry of National Defense. Quite recently, HK has signed a contract with the Korea Expressway Corporation (KEC) to install street lamps on Ulsan-Pohang Expressway and the lamps are also expected to generate powers by using the jet stream. In addition, HK installed a wind power generator on the rooftop of the new KEC building. Other companies which are closely working in cooperation with HK include Korea East-West Power, Korea Midland Power, Korea South-East Power, K-Water, Korea District Heating Corp, Korea Rural Community Corp, Lotte, Samsung, Hanwha, SK Telecom, LG CNS, POSCO Engineering, China Telecom and Ericson (US).

HK opened a factory in China within two months of its establishment which means that CEO Kang equally focused on pioneering overseas market from the very beginning. In 2009, he jointly applied a patent for normal axis development with Waseda University (Japan) and in 2010, he obtained a certificate of Technology Property Evaluation from City of Bejijing as Korea's first wind power generation company. Kang then opened a corporation in Kazakhstan in 2014, started running a manufacturing system in Weihai (China) and has established yet another corporation in the US this year. Also, HK built a power plant in Ethiopia in cooperation with FC Barcelona and supplied electricity for the reconstruction project in Iraq with Hanwha. Kang said "Currently, we are planning to engage in tourist complex development and we will keep expanding the scope of our business to secure a firm status in our fields. But eventually, we want to grow as a global company."
