CEO Shin Ki-chung of Taegwang
Introducing patented eco-friendly buoy

Introducing patented eco-friendly buoy
It is estimated that about 51 million polystyrene, regardless its shape and size, are used in the fisheries industry annually in Korea and 2 million of them go waste. But the collection rate stays at only 28% which is a significant indication of marin pollution. Most of them are used for farming laver, oysters and hijiki (brown sea vegetable) in South Gyeongsang and South Jeolla provinces. Showing a greater interest in the issues, CEO Kim Ki-chung of Taegwang has invented a semi-permanent eco-friendly buoy after numerous trial and error. He established Taegwang in 1992 and mainly made polystyrene boxes. The invented buoy was the result of Shin's 21 years of accumulated technology and knowhow in the field and Shin currently has applied patents in 9 categories for the product. He said "The the surface of the buoy is coated or covered with a film to enhance shock-resistant and it also maintains buoyancy longer."

Unlike the existing buoys broken to pieces when time goes by, Shin's buoy is firm yet light and can be collected easily. This is quite important as the fishes, birds and animals mistake the pieces for food resulting in destruction of marine ecosystems." Shin continued "The buoy is light, durable and recyclable and made of patented materials. It keeps its shape even if it is exposed to the strong sun for a long time thanks to the coating materials of PE film and anti-UV additives. You can also remove barnacles, which stick to the surface of the buoy, easily without damaging the buoy. It has a long life span of more than 15 years unlike the existing ones which normally last for about 5 to 6 years." The buoy is provided in various sizes; 64L, 100L, 200L, 800L and 2,000L. The price is a little expensive than the current market price but the fishermen will be able to buy at reasonal price with the support of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries which plans to encourage the fishermen to use eco-friendly buoy.

The ministry currently is giving the fishermen the subsidy covering 70% of the cost for buying the materials in the hope of saving the money for collecting the waste which is more than the subsidy. In fact, 17,000 buoys currently used in the southern coast of Korea can be reduced to 7,000 when used Shin's buoy. Also while the inside of the existing buoys is void which makes it difficult to install solar power equipment on them due to the danger of damage, Shin's buoy is ideally designed for it. Shin mentioned that it would significantly contribute to the regional economy when solar power plants were installed on the surface of the Daega Reservoir and Madong Lake in Goseong.

He continued "The ministry announced to increase the collecting rate of the wasted polystyrene up to 80% from the current 28% by 2019 through a total management system as well as the current compulsory 10% collecting rate to 40% by 2020. The ministry will also make it legal to use eco-friendly buoys and carry out related training and education for the fishermen." Thanks to his innovation in eco-friendly buoy, some Chinese companies are investigating opportunities for technical cooperation at the moment. In addition, Taegwang has ranked No.1 in market share for 8 years in a row.

Differentiated management strategy brings a success
Shin used to work for a Japanese polystyrene company based in Seoul. He started as a staff but promoted to a high position. Then he came to know about the seriousness of the polystyrene issues in the southern coast of Korea. He quit the job and came down to Goseong to start a business with his accumulated knowhow and experience in the field. But within three years of running the business, his company went bankrupt due to the limited environment of the region and lack of knowledge about it. Shin said "But I never gave up and passionately carried out R&D. One thing I realized though was that people are most important to make a success in business." While giving a considerable effort in R&D, Shin also improved staff welfare and work efficiency. Now the business is stable, Shin and the staff are actively engaging in social contributions. They regularly donate rice and heating oil for people in need and have donated polystyrene boxes to Kimchi Sharing Festival since 2009. Shin said "I've done these good deeds for 10 years. Whether making good products or helping underprivileged neighbours, people must be the center of it. People, technology, quality materials and efficient management system are much more important than pursuing profits only." Power Korea hopes that Shin and his staff will make yet another success story in 2016.
