Chairman Park Yoon-mok of Korea Open High School Students' Association
"Age is just a number in learning"

"I don't divide the world into the weak and the strong, or the successes and the failures, those who make it or those who don't. I divide the world into learners and nonlearners." - Benjamin Barber
Park Yoon-mok was inaugurated as Chairman of the Korea Open High School Students' Association last January. He represents the 14,000 students of 42 member high schools nationwide and promotes their rights and interests. He himself currently is a third year student at the school affiliated to Masan High School. He said "Like most of our member students, I gave up moving on to high school as my family couldn't afford tuition fee any more. In addition, I had to earn bread and butter instead of my late father." Park did all kinds of jobs to feed his family and was eventually able to run his own a business. But his desire to learn was always there in his heart all those years and he started learning again from where he stopped at the age of 50. Korea Open High School marked the 40th anniversary in 2014 and it has provided an opportunity for those who had to stop learning to continue the study. Tens of thousands of students are graduating every year. Park said "You only need to go to the school on Sunday twice a month biweekly which means that you can keep your business while studying. You can also study online and make new friends with various background who will possibly be your business partners, who knows."

Growing your dream with passion in learning
The age does not count for you to join the school but your passion will. The curriculum Korea Open High School is the same as those 3 year general high schools. Park said "Learning is designing your future and an act of making your dream come true. It's really impressive that most students are aged over 50 but their passion is second to none. There is no age or the best way to learn. Only passion. If you want to join but not so sure, just pay a visit once. We will do everything we can to help you. It's better to do something late than to never do it at all. We live in the age of homo-hundred which means the age 60 is still regarded as young. Just pay a visit right now and make your unfulfilled desire fulfilled!" It is the first time that a local member took the chairman's position and Park is feeling a sense of big responsibility. He said "I feel really proud yet a burden on my shoulders. My top priority is at improving the public recognition on Open High School. The society tend to look down on our students but I will actively spread the fact that many people with high social status are actually from the school and some of the global influences are also late learners." Meanwhile, Park is also serving as Chairman of a regional high school football club supporters' association in the hope of contributing to the development of local sports. Park concluded by quoting of an American political theorist and bestseller author Benjamin Barber's remark “I don't divide the world into the weak and the strong, or the successes and the failures, those who make it or those who don't. I divide the world into learners and non learners."
