Independence Activist of the Month
Frank William Schofield: 15.03.1889~12.04.1970, Order of Merit for National Foundation, Independent Medal in 1968

1. A witness of The March 1st Movement
Schofield, with his wife, visited Korea as a missionary in November 1916 and provided bacteriology lectures at Severance Medical School on the recommendation of Principal O. R. Avison. He soon came to know about the Japanese brutality on Korean people and showed a deep sympathy and love for the sufferers. He recorded The March 1st Movement by taking photos and wrote a report about the The Chaiamni Church Arson Massacre happened on 14 April 1919. He heard about the massacre on 18 April and took the trouble of moving his uncomfortable body affected by polio to travel down to the site by a 9 o'clock train and started to help the injured as soon as he arrived. His report titled as 'The Massacre of Chai-Amm-Ni' was then published on an English paper 'The Shanghai Gazette' on 27 May 1919 with the help of an anonymous special correspondent in Seoul who sent the report to the newspaper.

2. Revisit and voluntary service
He went back to his country due to his illness but revisited Korea on an invitation of President Rhee Syng-man in August 1958. But he then again had to see the miserable people with tens of thousands of orphans and unemployed in the devastated land caused by The Korean War. According to his report published on The Choson Ilbo on 3 January 1959, he criticized the Rhee government for suppression of the press by writing "People are terrified. Armed police officers are around the National Assembly Building." His another report titled 'The Korean Church's Yesterday and Today', published on the March 1961 issue of 'Christian Ideas', compared the Korean church in the colonial era and the early Korean church in the 1960s. He wrote "The Korean churches around that time were pure and clear while most Korean churches today are corrupted. The corruption comes when Christians deviate from the true meaning of the Bible and the teachings of Jesus."
