꿈꾸며 즐기는 예체능 영어교육, ‘키즈에끌’을 만나다

아이들은 ‘움직임’을 통해 세상을 배워나간다. 역동적이고 다양한 환경에서 오감을 통해 경험하는 모든 것들이 아이들에게는 ‘놀이’이자 ‘교육’이 된다. 뿐만 아니라 신체적 활동은 발육을 촉진하며, 심리적 안정과 사회성 발달에도 긍정적인 영향을 준다는 점에서 요즘 아이들에게 더욱 중요하다. 이른바 ‘놀면서 배우는 것’이 가장 좋은 유아교육인 셈이다.

‘벽을 허물다’, 아이들의 눈높이에 맞춘 공간
시시각각 변화하며 더 나은 지향점을 모색해 온 유아교육이 근래에 이르러 도달한 곳은 바로 신체놀이 활동을 통한 창의적 체험 교육이다. 아이들이 자유롭게 뛰어 놀면서도 다양한 사고와 교육을 체험할 수 있도록 함으로써 잠재되어 있던 무한한 창의성을 이끌어내고자 하는 것이다. 이러한 가운데 오는 3월 개원을 준비 중인 예체능 유아교육원 ‘키즈에끌(Kids Eccle)’은 최고의 시설과 강사진, 유아교육에 예체능을 접목시킨 커리큘럼을 바탕으로 유아기 아동교육에 고심하는 학부모들에게 크게 주목 받고 있다.

용인시 수지구 동천동에 위치한 지하 1층, 지상 4층 규모의 키즈에끌은 건축문화대상 대통령상에 빛나는 신춘규 건축사의 손길이 닿아있다. 먼저 벽이 없이 개방된 형태로 조성되어 아이들이 쉽게 자연을 접할 수 있는 넓은 공간에서 각자의 개성을 자유롭게 키워나갈 수 있도록 배려했으며, 통유리창을 통해 들여다볼 수 있는 지하 1층에는 길이 25m의 6개 레인을 갖춘 수영장이 마련되어 있어 안전하고 쾌적한 환경에서 수영을 즐기고 배울 수 있다. 또한 건물 외부에는 야외무대와 모래놀이터, 숲속 놀이터가 있어 아이들이 체육, 예술은 물론 다양한 자연체험 활동을 할 수 있도록 되어 있다. 조희연 대표는 “키즈에끌은 고대 아테네의 정치, 철학, 사회, 문화 활동의 거점 역할을 했던 ‘에클레시아(Ecclesia)’에서 따온 이름이에요. 저희는 그 이름처럼 아이들을 위한 전인적 교육을 추구하며, 아이들 개개인의 적성과 재능을 살려내고, 아이들 눈높이에 맞춘 교육을 제공하고자 합니다”라고 밝혔다. 

어른보다 아이들을 우선하는 키즈에끌의 교육철학은 ‘내 아이들에게 신나게 놀면서 배울 수 있는 공간을 만들어주겠다’는 조 대표의 생각에서 비롯됐다. 98년 방콕 아시안게임 수영 금메달리스트인 조희연 대표는 과거 호주에서의 유학생활을 통해 공부와 운동을 함께하는 것이 아이들에게 무척이나 중요함을 깨닫게 됐다고 한다. 조 대표는 “키즈에끌이 추구하는 건 자유로운 교육이에요. 닫힌 공간에서 스트레스를 받는 것이 아니라 열린 교실에서 몸으로 체험하면서 지식을 습득하는, 규칙에 얽매이지 않고 마음껏 뛰어 놀면서 스스로 터득해나가는 ‘아이들 중심의 유아교육기관’을 꿈꾸고 있어요”라고 설명했다.

영어를 배우는 곳이 아닌, 영어로 노는 곳
키즈에끌의 교육이념은 크게 4가지로 대표된다. 어른들이 정한 규칙에 따르는 것이 아니라 아이들 스스로 자신의 룰을 만들고 지켜나가는 ‘No Rules’, 교재에 기반한 주입식 교육이 아닌 놀이와 체험, 미술, 스포츠 등을 통한 교육인 ‘No Books’, 벽으로 공간을 나누어서 한계를 정하는 것이 아니라 자유롭게 토론하고 소통, 협력하는 ‘No Walls’, 최고의 공기청정시스템과 수영장 천연살균시스템으로 세균 없이 안전한 교육공간을 추구하는 ‘No Germs’가 그것이다. 

키즈에끌의 가장 큰 특징은 ‘8Q+’를 토대로 개발한 자체 커리큘럼으로 교육이 진행되며, 모든 예체능 수업이 영어로 진행되고 있다는 점이다. 여기서의 영어수업은 단순히 말하기 듣기에 치중된 회화 수업이 아니라 영어 표현이 바탕이 된 상태에서 세계 유수의 사교 스포츠 활동인 수영, 조정, 펜싱 등을 경험하는 것에서 출발한다. 배움이 중점이 되는 것이 아니라, 즐기며 자연스럽게 익히도록 하는 것이 목표이다.

이처럼 수준 높은 교육을 구현하기 위한 강사진도 국내 최고 수준으로 갖춰져 있다. 히로시마 아시안게임 수영 동메달리스트 이지현 강사, 부산 아시안게임 리듬체조 동메달리스트 조은정 강사를 비롯해 음악, 미술, 스포츠 각 분야에서 세계적인 성공을 이룬 대가들을 강사로 초빙했으며, 미국의 뮤지컬학교 ‘스파크’와 협약을 맺고 브로드웨이 출신 프로듀서와 현직 배우들의 강의로 구성된 뮤지컬 아카데미를 개설할 계획이다. 조 대표는 “예체능계에는 금메달을 딴 선수를 보고 성장해 금메달리스트가 된 사례가 많아요. 아이들이 꿈을 갖고, 그 꿈을 키워나가는 데에는 실제로 그 꿈을 실현한 사람들의 이야기를 듣고 보는 것만큼 좋은 게 없죠”라며 훌륭한 멘토의 존재가 아이들에게 얼마나 큰 영향을 끼치는 지를 강조했다.

“아이들이 세계적인 인재로 자랄 수 있도록 최선 다할 것”
유아교육에 대한 많은 이들의 관심만큼이나 다양한 이론을 실제 교육에 접목시키고자 하는 노력도 꾸준히 계속되어 왔다. 그러나 대개는 현실적인 여건이나 사회적 인식의 한계에 부딪혀 뜻한 바를 마음껏 펼치지 못하는 경우가 많았다. 이에 조희연 대표는 키즈에끌을 통해 아직까지 국내에서 시도되지 못한 다양한 교육을 선보이고자 한다. 특히 그는 최근 초등교육에서 전면 의무화 편성된 ‘수영교육’의 중요성을 강조했다. 조 대표는 “외국에서는 생후 100일만 지나면 수영을 가르칠 정도로 생존수영이 보편화되어있습니다. 최근 국내에도 유아 수영교육이 보급되고 있지만, 교육의 전문성이나 수요를 감당할 수 있는 시설이 턱없이 부족한 상태입니다”라고 지적했다. 선진국의 안전사례들을 본받아 국내 학부모들도 교육에 대한 인식을 바꾸고 수영 교육의 중요성을 깨닫는 것이 필요하다는 것이다. 한국수영협회 이사로서 수중재활프로그램 등에도 관심을 보이고 있는 조 대표는 키즈에끌을 통해 생명과 건강을 지킬 수 있는 ‘생존수영’ 교육이 더욱 널리 보급되었으면 한다는 바람을 전했다.

조 대표는 유아교육에 있어서 무엇보다 중요한 것은 가족과 함께 행복한 시간을 갖는 것이라 강조했다. 그 또한 키즈에끌을 통해 아이들을 키우며 함께 할 수 있는 일을 찾은 것에 감사하고 있다고 전했다. 조 대표의 목표는 키즈에끌이 아이들을 위한 행복하고 안전한 교육환경으로 자리매김하고, 그 안에서 세계적 역량을 갖춘 인재가 탄생하는 것이다. 영어와 중국어 뿐 아니라 스페인어와 프랑스어 등 키즈에끌에서 제공할 수 있는 영역을 더욱 확대해나가고자 하는 것도 그 일환이다. 아이들을 위한 최고의 환경과 교육을 구현하고자 하는 조희연 대표. 그의 꿈이 담겨 있는 예체능 유아교육원 키즈에끌이 훗날 세계로 뻗어나갈 글로벌 인재들의 첫 번째 보금자리가 되어주기를 기대한다.

Providing a customized space and curriculum for childhood education
Childhood education nowadays involve many physical activities and experimentation. This is because developing children's creativity through hands-on experience is valued higher than ever before. In this respect, a childhood education school 'Kids Eccle', opening in mid-March, is attracting a great attention from school parents with the best facilities, teachers and curriculum. Located in Dongcheon-dong, Suji-gu, Yongin City, Kids Eccle is a 4 storey building with 1 floor underground. The building is designed by the presidential prize winner of the Korean Architecture Award Shin Chun-gyu. The open place without walls can give children an ideal environment to freely play and learn and the basement walled by large glasses has a 25 meter and 6 lane swimming pool. Outside of the building, there is an outdoor stage, sand playground and forest playground. CEO Jo says "I got inspired by Ecclesia, an ancient Greek assembly, which played the anchoring role in politics, philosophy, sociology and culture. Like the name, we aim to foster children with right personality, aptitude and talent in our customized space and curriculum." Jo actually is a 98 Bangkok Asian Games gold medalist in swimming. She went to Australia to study after that and realized the fact that studying combined with exercise is very important in childhood education. She then decided to create a space where children can learn while playing. Jo continues "We pursue free education and that's why we designed the space rather open. I think it is very important for children to learn while playing without being bound to certain rules." 

Not to learn English but to play English
Kids Eccle has 4 educational principles: 'No Rules' made by adults but children make their own rules, 'No Books' of rote learning but experience, arts and sports, 'No Walls' but free movement and communication, and 'No Germs' realized by the topnotch air cleaning system and natural sterilization system in the swimming pool. But the biggest pride of Kids Eccle comes from its unique curriculum developed based on '8Q+'. All the classes are carried out in English coordinated with swimming, rowing and fencing. Also, teachers and instructors in Kids Eccle are all professionals. Lee Ji-hyeon, for example, is a Hiroshima Asian Games bronze medalist in swimming and Jo Eun-jung is a Busan Asian Games bronze medalist in rhythmic gymnastics. Music and arts teachers are also consisted of those who made a success in global stages. Quite recently, CEO Jo signed a business agreement with an American musical school 'Spark' in order to realize her ambition of opening a musical academy with lectures provided by Broadway producers and actors. Jo says "Many gold medalists got inspiration from their senior gold medalists. For children to have and to grow their dream, there's no better way than to listen to the story of those who achieved their dream." 

Fostering globally talented children
There has been as much efforts in developing teaching materials for babies and children as in people's interest in the education. Regretfully, many of the efforts went in vain due to a lack of social recognition and poor conditions in reality. This is the reason that CEO Jo gives a particular effort in introducing new and diversified teaching materials and methods. She especially pointed out that swimming has become a mandatory subject in all elementary schools. She continued "Many advanced countries start teaching survival swimming when a child is 100 day old. Although Korea recently started to teach survival swimming for babies and children but a lack of facility and specialists are still remained as problem to be improved." For this reason, Jo is also serving as a board member of the Korea Swimming Association to spread survival swimming as well as underwater rehabilitation programmes. Jo emphasized that parents spending time together with their children is most important and Kids Eccle would provide an ideal space where parents watch them grow their talent and dream. To boost up her global project further, Jo is planning to introduce Chinese, Spanish and French in classes alongside English. Power Korea sends a message of support to Jo and Kids Eccle.
