A living witness of 40 years of Korea's children's art education
"I'm happy that I'm an artist and an educator“
Painter Oh Yong-hwan, Head Professor of Kyonggi University ACE (Adult & Continuing Education)

Contributing to development of Korea's children's art education
Oh was picked up by his teacher and joined the art club of the school when he was 10. He had to try really hard as he could not afford a private art teacher like his friends. But his talent was well received by winning prizes several times at a sketch contest held by <Shinkihaewa Hongik University, Sudosadae>. With his dream of entering top universities failed, Oh and his friend opened <Puleun Art Study Center>. He then entered Myongji College to study teaching methods for art and read a considerable number of books home and abroad related to art education for children. He changed the name of the center to Paran Art Institute and received accreditation from Seoul Education Committee. He carried out his study at Korea National Open University with a full scholarship while serving as a supply high school teacher, private teacher and lecturer of adult and continuing education at Sookmyung Women's University and Hanyang University.

Oh graduated the open university with excellent grades and also sent many of his students (of Paran Art Institute) to university. He then received an offer of head of judge for numerous art competitions held by The Junior Hankook Iibo, The World Association for Art of Exchange Organization, Korea Post and the Korea National Tuberculosis Association. But his dream of being a professor was finally came true when he passed open recruitment for Early Childhood Education at Dong-u College in Sokcho. During his 5 year service at the college, Oh gave art lessons to the head of the department while passionately produced his own art works. It was one of the happiest times of his life for he could be able to teach students and create his own works at the same time.

A living witness of 40 years of Korea's children's art education
Oh served as head professor of Kyunggi University ACE and an adjunct professor in Early Childhood Education at Dong-u College. He held two solo exhibitions at Seoul Arts Center and La Mer Gallery. He says "I was more pleased when my pupils made a success as an artist than when I studied fine art at Kyunggi University and received Chancellor's Prize for being the top in the department."  As the director of Paran Kindergarten (former Paran Art Institute), Oh obtained a certificate in children's education. He continues "I opened Children's Art Department at Kyunggi University ACE. The teaching materials were developed based on various university teaching materials of the world and I specially focused on personality and intellectual development over just technique."

Preparing for an exhibition
Oh recently quit all his positions and is focusing on his realistic and semi-representational paintings in a rural town at the moment. He deepened his understanding about modern and abstract art in university life and tried to simplify his works. Originally, his brushwork gave emphasis on precise drawing, realistic colour and lively expression as shown in 'The Cent of Nature' and 'Bull' but he emphasizes more on soft touch and imagination in the form of semi-representational painting nowadays as shown in 'The Glory of God'. He put various types of men and their hope and communication into the sun and the moon made of abstract lines and curves.

The background is a coloured frame and the detailed stem, holes and lines of the leaves of the tree were expressed on the simple colour of 2 dimensional illustration. In the work 'The Space of Thought' is a good example of Oh's semi-representational painting as he compressed space of life in various methods on a canvas. He also depicted a bird as a symbol of longing in his other work with the bird's vivid colour in abstract background or the 2 dimensional bird in realistic background. Oh takes things as simple and positive and reinterprets them in the work. Simplicity for Oh is a good tool to interpret things positively in his new brushwork. Meanwhile, Oh so far has had 10 solo exhibitions at various galleries including Seoul Arts Center and Sejong Museum of Art and many of his works were praised in France, Germany, China, Vietnam and the US. Currently, he is scheduled to have an invitation exhibition at the Tourist Center in Malaysia for one month in July. Power Korea wishes Oh a successful exhibition in Malaysia.
