A fable of the rabbit made in a simple form
The missionary of love rising for dream and hope from despair
The rabbit sculptor Lee Jun-yeong

The rabbit who embraces the hearts of people
It is said that pets are most beloved subject for many photographers and cartoonists as many of them nowadays live with one or two. For sculptor Lee, rabbit is the one who inspired the most. She bought the rabbit by chance from an old woman around Chungmuro Subway Station when she was majoring in sculpture at Sungshin Women's University. She says "Mini rabbits (stays small til die) became popular for pet animal around that time and I bought the rabbit at KRW 5,000 including the food but I soon realized that there was no such thing as mini-rabbit but only baby rabbit." Nevertheless, Lee felt a great affection to the rabbit from baby to grown up. Belonging to the bottom of the food chain, rabbits fear many thing even for a little sound or a slight movement and Lee felt a sympathy to it as she herself were suffering from anxiety for being an artist. But this anxiety and sympathy rather developed into self esteem by the time she took a master's course in sculpture at the same university; she personified various animals such as rabbit, tiger, lion and bulldog in real or bigger size with confidence. The timid rabbit became bold and was the symbol of 'us' and 'people'. Lee says "Rabbits show lively expressions on face and body and this element can draw a great similarity and sympathy from people."

The missionary of love rising for dream and hope from despair
Lee does not emphasize or exaggerate the cuteness of a rabbit but gives simplicity in a 3 dimensional form. In the series of 'Despaired Rabbit', Lee made the rabbit sitting or standing with the head down to express the despair we feel in our lives. One might cannot help putting his hand on the despondent shoulders of the rabbit to cheer him up when seeing it. Lee says "I don't want to push audience to feel something. If my work can arouse a sympathy, that is more effective than the explanatory words. It's the same like a poet hides a meaning behind a word." The series also is the avatar of Lee's frustration (due especially to financial difficulty) which she ardently wanted to overcome. In the exhibition 'Merry Rabbitmas! Happy Hopping' held at Sacheon Gallery 1 for one month in December last year, Lee told about our dream, hope and attachment through the rabbit. 'The Love of The Tortoise and The Hare' and 'The Hero Lovely Rabbit' in particular stimulated the sensitivity of the audience.

Delivering a message through lettering
If Lee used a folding pose of the rabbit to express despair up until last year, she now takes lettering to openly express her thoughts. When we say "I love you", we feel a great force and affection. In the work 'Love Making', Lee expresses the pleasure of love by letting the rabbit write the world 'love' in lettering. Lee says "Blue means hope and red passion. These colourful images are the process of turning despair to hope. The folding legs of the rabbit means to rise one more time from the bottom and the rabbit sitting on a chair means to find a solution together. The space and things in which the rabbit is surrounded are the device for the rabbit to overcome failure and frustration." Lee added "Ultimately, I want to give an encouragement to people through my rabbit series. I ask them to pursue the beauty of life, enjoy their lives and be the protagonist of their own lives." Meanwhile, Lee has held more than 50 solo and group exhibitions so far and won the grand prize at The 4th Hongik Outdoor Sculpture Awards in 2000.
