Rare Diseases Center holds a healing talk
The 29th World Rare Disease Day raises awareness on rare diseases

Sharing information on aHUS
Seoul National University Hospital's Rare Disease Center and Rare Disease Treatment Research and Support Center (Head Prof. Jeong Hae-il) held a healing talk with the families of aHUS (atypical Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome) on 13 last month. The event was held in order to raise awareness on rare diseased on the occasion of The 29th World Rare Disease Day. About 20 doctors, patients and families shared information about the diseases and encouraged each other. Prof. Jeong said "According to WHO, there are more than 7,000 kinds of rare diseases with about 130,000 to 350,000 related patients in Korea. We will actively share the information on the diseases with as many people as we can in the hope of increasing the public awareness." aHUS in particular is fatal as it causes TMA (thrombotic microangiopathy: blood clot and infection in the body damaging small veins) and it impairs kidney, heart and brain up to the level of death. The disease occurs regardless age and sex and 51 patients between 1996 and 2013 are reported to be diagnosed with the disease in Korea. However, approx. 30%-50% of the patients are not known about its genetic causes and related researches therefore are being carried out. Prof. Kang Hee-gyeong of Seoul National University Children's Hospital gave a lecture in the event to help the patients and the families understand better about the disease and its research results. Kang said "Precise early diagnosis is a must to treat aHUS and doctors need to have an enough time to find appropriate treatment methods. The current treatments include 'plasma exchange', 'dialysis' and 'liver and kidney transplant' and I heard that a drug therapy has recently been approved by FDA." Meanwhile, Seoul National University Hospital is carrying out global level R&D, education and medical services with top notch medical equipments and teaching & training materials in the hope of creating a healthier world.
