‘응답하라 1992’ 작은 봉사가 25년 간 만든 15만 개 귀중한 밀알
“베풀수록 마음의 곳간은 행복으로 가득해, 이 기쁨을 해외 빈민국에도 전한다”

25년 간 어려운 이웃과 어르신들을 향한 나눔과 섬김, 사랑을 봉사로 환원해 세상을 행복으로 물들여 가는 단체가 있다. (사)전국자원봉사연맹은 결성 25주년을 맞아 무료급식과 독거노인을 위한 효도활동에 해외봉사라는 귀중한 이력을 추가했다. 나누면 나눌수록 마음의 곳간이 더 큰 기쁨으로 충만해 새로운 봉사의 원동력이 된다는 안천웅 이사장의 근황을 소개해 본다. 

25년간 나눔 실천해온 천사무료급식소 전국 확산시킨 원동력
‘헬퍼스하이’. 42.195km의 끝에 달할수록 고통보다 쾌락을 느낀다는 ‘러너스하이’처럼 어려운 사람을 도울수록 삶의 기쁨을 주는 정신적 자양강장제를 일컫는 말이다. 기부활동으로 유명한 어느 연예인은 헬퍼스하이의 기쁨을 “기부를 약속하면 책임과 목표의식, 일하고자 하는 의지가 더 커진다. 기부는 내 삶에 활력을 주면서 이웃을 돕는 일거양득”이라 말한다. 이 기쁨으로 25년간 대가 없이 사랑을 전한 (사)전국자원봉사연맹 안천웅 이사장도 봉사, 나눔의 시간들을 향해 인생의 가장 큰 행복이라고 힘주어 말한다. 안 이사장은 1992년 2월 18일을 잊을 수 없다. “전부터 준비해 왔지만 이 날이 전국자원봉사연맹의 정식 출범이자 자원봉사회원들의 체계적인 활동이 시작된 날이었다. 대구에서 처음 시작되어 현재 전국 10개지부와 천사무료급식소 26개소가 운영되고 있다. 회원들의 기부와 온정을 담아 월수금 격일제로 무료급식을 시행하고 있으며, 자원봉사자들의 노력기부로 조리와 배식을 한다. 연맹의 규모가 커지면서 전국을 순회하며 관리 중인데, 종교를 초월해 국가와 사회를 향한 배려심을 가진 전국의 봉사자들은 틈틈이 독거노인들을 위한 생일상, 도시락, 효도 크루즈관광, 영정사진 만들고 말벗되어드리기 등의 활동을 겸하고 있다” 안 이사장은 스스로를 ‘중독자’라 칭한다. 봉사로 파생되는 훈훈한 미담, 어려운 이웃들의 삶의 질이 한 단계 올라가는 것에 중독된 삶이기 때문이다.

“혼자되신 분들의 어둠과 침묵을 밝은 빛으로 채우는 등불, 인도하는 행로가 된다는 것은 약자를 배려하는 사람의 도리이기도 하고, 가슴으로부터 분출되는 인간애의 성취감이기도 하다” 오랜 활동으로 지칠 법도 하지만, 더 많은 자원봉사인원, 더 많은 쌀과 반찬을 구입할 재정의 확보라는 목표가 있기에 안 이사장의 눈빛은 항상 힘에 넘쳐 있다. “많은 분들이 우리가 느끼는 나눔의 기쁨과 성취감에 동참하셨으면 한다. 사회 구성원이자 사람이기에 공익을 실천할 의무 이전에, 나눔을 생활화할수록 커져가는 그 기쁨도 직접 경험할 수 있기 때문이다”

이웃을 향한 사랑이 미얀마 맹인학교를 밝혀준 등불 되어
안 이사장은 정부나 기업의 지원 대신 회원들과 독지가들의 힘으로 이룬 조건 없는 나눔이 더 벅찬 행복으로 돌아온 경험을 이야기한다. “기초수급자이신 어떤 어르신이 10년 간 용돈을 모아 525만 원을 만들어 자신처럼 배고픈 시절을 겪은 사람들을 위해 써 달라고 기탁하신 적이 있다. 한 초등학교의 45명 어린이들은 고사리손으로 모은 귀한 120만 원을 우리에게 건네며 할아버지 할머니들을 위해 써달라고 전했다. <1박 2일>이라는 유명 예능에서는 생선을 판 수익금을 모금함에 넣고 가셨다. 보람과 함께 더 따뜻한 나눔을 해야겠다는 소명의식을 느끼게 된 일들이다” 안 이사장은 더 많은 영역에서 더 체계적인 봉사를 실천하기 위해 (사)전국자원봉사연맹을 UN에 가입시킬 준비를 하고 있다. “대한민국이 존속하는 한 우리의 봉사는 계속될 것이고, 단체를 영원히 존속시킬 계기와 기틀이 필요하기 때문이다. 우리의 핵심활동인 무료급식도, 지금은 5백 명에서 1천 명 규모의 식사를 준비하고 있는데 앞으로 더 많은 분들이 무료급식의 혜택을 누렸으면 하는 마음이다. 내 가족에게 주는 식사라 생각해서 따뜻한 국, 고기나 생선류는 매번 메뉴에 넣고 있다” 무료급식이 중요한 이유는 영양의 공급 외에도 비슷한 연령과 처지의 어르신들이 만나고 외로움을 해소하는 공간을 제공하는 효과도 있기 때문이다. 또 봉사자들은 어르신들과 직접 교감하며 세대 간의 거리감을 해소하는 귀중한 시간을 가졌다는 소감을 남긴다. 이미 15만 명이 넘는 자원봉사자들이 봉사의 참된 의미와 삶의 희망을 보상으로 얻어 간 것에서 입증할 수 있다. 기독교 목회자이기도 한 안 이사장은 한국을 넘어 세계의 빈민들을 구제하는 활동을 차근차근 실행에 옮기고 있다.

대전의 해외동포 무료양로원 건립, 동남아 빈민국 무료급식 및 생필품 지원, 부모 잃은 해외의 아이들과의 결연 지원 및 다문화 가족 지원까지 안 이사장의 차후 일정은 빼곡하게 채워져 있다. “쌀 기부, 배식에 참여하시는 것도, 하루에 몇 백원씩을 모으시는 것도 좋다. 봉사는 언제나 소박하고 다양한 방법으로부터 시작된다. 전국 시민들과 회원들의 자발적인 참여로 키워 온 소중한 사랑나눔터, 천사무료급식소에서 많은 분들을 뵐 수 있길 바란다” 지난겨울 미얀마의 맹인들을 위한 급식봉사, 가재도구 정리, 맹인학교, YEC학사관, 인센지역 ‘모딧따2’ 빈민촌 어린이들에게 장학금 지급 등 알찬 봉사일정을 마친 안 이사장과 자원봉사자들은 앞으로도 국내와 해외봉사의 영역을 넓혀 갈 예정이다. 천사는 하늘에도 있지만, 바로 우리 곁에서도 아름다운 모습으로 함께하고 있었다.

The driving force that spread Angel Soup Kitchen
'Helpers High' is a psychological term meaning that the more we help others the happier our lives become. One celebrity famous for donation once said "I get a goal and a sense of responsibility when I make a promise for donation and this becomes the energy of my life." Chairman Ahn Chun-woong of 1004 is also one of those who shares the same feeling like the celebrity mentioned above. He says "Sharing what we have with others is the biggest happiness we can have in our lives. 1004 was established on 18 February 1992 in Daegu City, the day which I never forget. It now has 10 branches including 26 Angel Soup Kitchen nationwide. The free meal service is provided by our volunteers on Monday, Wednesday and Friday every week. All of our members work together regardless their religion and background and we not only do this free meal service but also actively engage in various voluntary services such as holding birthday party, lunch box, cruise tour and portrait photos for elderly people." Ahn calls himself as a volunteer addict because it makes his life really happy and worth. He continues "Helping others is the core element of humanity and it is like a lighthouse for the dark times of life. The goal of securing more volunteers and the budget for buying rice and side dishes always makes me awake with full of energy. I hope more people will join in our good deeds as they can surely feel what it's like to help others in return."

Ahn values more of the donation of the members and supporters than the support of the government and companies. He says "One elderly man donated KRW 5.25 million which was his pocket money saved for 10 years. 45 elementary students donated KRW 1.20 million and the famous TV show 'Illbak-Leeil (One Night Two Days)' also donated the profits made by selling fish. We are really impressed by this voluntary donation." In order to spread voluntary service at a global level, Ahn is planning to enlist 1004 in the UN. He continues "We don't have any intention to stop our service till the end but we wish it lasted forever as a global level service. Our main service of free meal, for example, used to be provided up to 500 people but it will be expanded to cover up to 1,000 this year. We prepare the food like we serve it to our own families and warm soup, meat and fish are always on the menu." Free meal service is not only fill up the stomach of elderly people but they can have a chance to meet and communicate each other including the volunteers. Currently, 150,000 volunteers are working for 1004. Apart from the chairman's role, Ahn is also a pastor who is busy to carry out his plan this year: building a free nursing home in Daejeon City for overseas Koreans, providing free meals to poor countries in South East Asia, and giving a support for multi-cultural families.

Ahn concludes "Helping others starts at a small thing in various ways. One's will is more important than the amount to donate and I hope more people will join 1004 and Angel Soup Kitchen." Last year, Ahn and the team opened a school for the blind, YEC building, and supported scholarship for children in the poor village (Moditta2) around Insen area in Myanmar. Ahn and the team is determined to keep carrying out their active service both home and abroad this year like they always did. Power Korea send a message of support.
