잊히고 버려져 봉인된 기억을 새롭게 재생한 형상들
“버려진 물건과 소외된 인간이 지녔던 가치에

자연은 오로지 자신이 창조한 생명들이 수명을 다했을 때만 받아들이기 때문에, 금속으로 태어난 소모품과 패키지가 제 구실을 다하고 돌아온 들 받아주지 않는다. 그래서 자연이 만든 톱니바퀴 속에 들어가지 못한 금속들이 갈 곳은 불이라는 이름의 소멸과 소생의 순환 고리 속이다. 조각가 정의지 작가는 열기로 조형되어 오랜 침묵을 깨고 새 생명을 얻은 금속들의 그 깊은 속내에 대해 이야기한다.

저명한 도예 가문이라는 성장과정, <한국 구상조각대전> 대상, <ECO환경조각대전> 대상 등 다수 수상경력이 있는 조각가 정의지 작가는 자신의 배경과 자연 속 동물들의 힘의 원리 사이에는 유사점이 많다고 한다. “리제네시스는 버려진 금속이라는 오브제로 조형한 동물 형상이다. 우연히 짓눌린 채 버려진 양은 냄비가 이전에는 가치 있게 사용되었을 것이라는 생각을 한 후부터 조형 재료로 사용하게 되었다. 그리고 새로이 조형된 형태는 마땅히 생명이 있는 형상이어야 한다고 여겼다. 인간이 사회에서 역할을 부여받듯 동물들도 자연 속에서 일정한 위치를 갖고 있다. 그리고 뿔이 클수록 동료와의 힘겨루기에 강하고 우두머리의 힘을 상징하지만 맹수에게 쫓길 때는 불리한 큰뿔사슴을 보면서 동물의 상징성이 나의 상황을 대변한다고 느꼈다. 젊은 나이에 공모전에서 꾸준히 수상한 기쁨의 이면에는 다른 누군가의 낙선, 오해와 질시라는 그늘도 있기 때문이다” 이렇게 사물의 양면성을 철학적으로 해석하는 정 작가는 아이디어를 옮기기 위해 불을 택했다. 불이란 소멸이기도 하지만, 금속에 있어서는 소생을 의미하기도 한다. 유년기부터 도자 과정에 익숙한 정 작가는 철근을 가열해 뼈대를 잡고, 그 위에 양은냄비를 자르고 붙여 큰 동물의 형태를 만든 뒤 산소용접기로 태우고 닦아낸다. 버려진 물건들의 과거를 씻김굿 하듯 엄숙한 소생 과정이 거듭될수록, 수차례 분만한 산모처럼 익숙해져 1년 이상 걸렸던 과정이 차츰 6개월, 4개월로 줄어들었다. 오브제들의 과거를 태워 새 형상으로 부활시키는 제작이 익숙해져 갈수록 젊은 예술가가 흔히 갖는 미래에 대한 불안감과 인간관계의 고민도 줄어갔고, 그 자리에는 자신의 예술로 채워갈 확신과 가능성이 남았다. 2009년부터 시작된 리제네시스는 정 작가를 상징하는 테마이자, 더 새로운 테마로 옮겨갈 수 있는 디딤돌이 된 시리즈가 되어 지금도 황소와 큰뿔사슴의 늠름한 형태로 포효하고 있다.

일련의 작업으로 창작과 내면의 갈증을 해소한 정 작가는 동료 작가들과 아트 프로젝트를 기획한다. 타인의 피드백으로 작품을 함께 성장시키기에, 일반인들이 예술에 한 발짝 더 다가설 수 있게 재능기부라는 형식을 빌려 그들의 세계로 직접 들어가기로 한 것이다. “원래 주어진 도예가 아닌 조각 조형이 내 기질에 더 맞는다. 도예는 응집과 인내의 단아한 예술이지만 내가 추구하는 것은 속부터 채워가는 흙, 안으로 깎아 들어가는 나무처럼 최종 형태에 예측할 수 없는 균열이 있는 소재가 아니라 튀어나오고 확장되는 용접과 금속이라는 것을 깨달았다.” 그래서 작가로서는 “감상자들에게 해석하는 자유를 주는 것은 작품제작과정에서의 작가의 생각을 일기장처럼 은닉한 대가”라는 그의 소신과 반대로, 작업 과정은 이처럼 금속의 물성과 똑같은 확장성을 띠고 진행되었다. 2012년부터는 기억의 흔적을 담은 새로운 테마인 엔그램(Engram)의 기반을 만들었으며, 2013년에는 요양원의 치매 노인들을 위한 프로그램을 시작하며 ‘잊혀진 기억’을 시리즈화했다. 조하섬 프로젝트를 위해 2014년 초도라는 섬에서 폐가에 들어가 설치한 하프미러와 빛의 시각적인 조형을 담은 시도와, 2015년 스틱스 강에서 유래된 이승과 저승을 가르는 선을 담은 작업도 호평이었지만 개인전에서 선보인 <엔그램-잊혀진 기억>은 조하밤 프로젝트가 낳은 가장 이상적인 성과였다. 정 작가는 “이 작품은 버려진 알루미늄캔과 철을 이용해 압축해서 자른 단면이며, 요양원 할머니들의 미술치료프로그램을 겸한 창작 콜라보를 위해 치매 노인들과 소통하면서 탄생한 것이다.

한때 음료를 담고 있던 캔은 마블링되어 일그러진 형상이 되었지만 고유의 성질과 색상을 압축해 보여준다. 인생의 끄트머리에서 과거와 현재의 기억이 엉킨 상태로 살아가는 할머니들이 지닌 추억을 형상화하면 이런 모양이 아닐까 싶다. 불안정하게 박제되어 온전히 뽑아내기 어려울 뿐, 대화를 나누어 보면 과거 그분들의 경험들은 여전히 기억 속에 선명하게 존재함을 알 수 있다”고 말한다. 정 작가는 대가나 지원 없이 멤버들의 힘만으로 이루어진 프로젝트를 통해 인간과의 소통, 나눔이 예술에 영감을 주는 것을 경험하며 깊은 인상을 받았다고 한다. 그래서 올해는 5명에서 8명으로 늘어난 조하밤 멤버들과 함께 푸르매재단과의 미숙아를 위한 미술재활센터에서의 프로젝트를 계획 중이다. 처음 작업할 때의 간절함과 의지를 작품 활동 내내 유지하겠다는 정 작가는 국내에서는 6월 조각페스타 출품, 그리고 해외 전시를 차근차근 준비할 것이라 한다. 버려진 것, 소외된 존재의 새로운 의미를 찾아주는 그의 새로운 결과물이 사뭇 기대된다.

Re-Genesis, the resurrection of long forgotten objects
Sculptor Jeong grew up in a famous ceramic artist family. He won various prizes including the grand prize at the Korea Figurative Sculpture Exhibition and the ECO Environmental Sculpture Exhibition. Jeong says that there are many similarities between the energy of wild animals and his background. He continues "Re-Genesis is an animal made of waste metal. I came to think that abandoned nickel-silver pots might once were very useful and I had a feeling to give a life to them again in a different lively form. Like we have our role and position in nature, so do those wilde animals. Animals with bigger horns symbolize power and leader but at the same time they are in disadvantageous situation when running from savage beasts. And I thought their condition was similar to mine because winning prizes at competitions means that many more have to suffer from failure and jealousy."

Jeong chose fire to express this double-sidedness of things. Fire can mean extinction but resuscitation when it comes to metal. Jeong builds frame by heating reinforcing steel and adds nickel-sliver pots by cutting and attaching before giving welding and polishing. This process took about a year at first but reduced to be 6 months and 4 months as Jeong's experience in the process was getting accumulated. Interestingly, the more he gave a life to abandoned objects the more he became released from tension and anxiety about his future and human relations and as a result he could be able to put convictions and possibilities in himself and his works. Started in 2009, Re-Genesis (bull and Irish elk) has become Jeong's symbolic work on which he can move on to the other themes.

After establishing his art world, Jeong planned an art project with his fellow artists in the form of talent donation. Jeong says "I found myself good at working with metal and welding. I think the process of creating a work through expansion and protruded part is really charming. The viewers are free to interpret my completed work in various point of view as I hide my thoughts in my own diary during the making process." In 2012, Jeong created a foundation for 'Engram' which contains  trace of his memory. In 2013, he started a programme for elderly people with dementia and serialized his theme of 'Forgotten Memory'. In 2014, Jeong installed 'Half Mirror (visual modeling of lights)' at a disused house in Chodo Island for Johasom Project and in 2015, he created a work containing the lines that divides life and eternity, the story originated from Styx River. But his 'Engram-Forgotten Memory' was the most ideal result of Johabam Project.

Jeong says "This work is a cut surface of abandoned metal and aluminium which I compressed. I created it as a means of art therapy for elderly women in sanatoriums through communication. The cans once we drank to quench our thirst are alive one more time with its inherent nature and color in my work. I found vivid memories of those elderly women and I think that my work might present the form of these vivid yet tangled memories of them." Jeong added that he and his colleague artists learned a lot and found some inspirations through this project. Much encouraged by this, Jeong and 8 members of Johabam (3 more than last year) are planning to carry out a new project in rehabilitation art therapy centers in cooperation with The Purme Foundation this year. Personally, Jeong is preparing for International Sculpture Fest 2016 in June and overseas exhibitions this year.
