미래에는 다운받는 아이보다 코딩하는 아이를 위한 시대가 올 것
“소프트웨어 의무교육과 IT 사물인터넷시대, 쉽고 재미있는 조기교육으로 대비”

컴퓨터 교육은 대개 워드, 파워포인트, 엑셀 계통의 자격증 혹은 이미 만들어진 것을 활용하는 방식이었다. 하지만 사물인터넷 시대를 맞이해, 조만간 한국에서도 유럽과 아시아에서 이미 진행 중인 코딩 혹은 소프트웨어 관련교육을 의무화할 예정이다. 이번에는 올바른 소프트웨어 교육에 필요한 교구와 교육시스템을 연구 중인 헬로소프트의 이재우 대표를 만나보았다. 

창의력과 사고력을 길러주는 단계별 소프트웨어 교육 프로그램
최근 교육부의 소프트웨어 교육 의무화에 맞추어 제대로 된 교재와 교구, 프로그램에 대한 요구가 높아지고 있다. 헬로소프트의 이재우 대표는 IT기업의 인사기획팀장을 거치면서 우리나라 소프트웨어 교육의 인프라 자체가 부족함을 느끼던 차에, 기술에 앞서 개념을 정립하는 교육 시스템을 만들기 시작했다. “헬로소프트에서는 프로그래밍의 ‘개념’을 가르친다. 올해부터 초등학교에 도입되어 2017년에는 초등학교, 2018년에는 중학교에서도 소프트웨어가 의무교육이 된다. 미국, 영국, 중국, 동남아에서도 프로그래밍을 어릴 때부터 가르치기 때문에, 교육부의 결정은 세계화에 맞춘 경쟁력을 기를 유용한 정책이다. 그렇지만 어린이들도 스마트폰을 가지고 다니는 것과 달리 아직은 가르칠 강사나 교재, 컴퓨터 시설도 부족하다. 그래서 아날로그 방식으로 아이들에게 알고리즘을 가르치는 방식을 쓰고 있다” 이 대표는 교육과정에서 다루어질 프로그램 중, 놀이나 체험 방식의 기초 알고리즘 <언플러그드 컴퓨팅>, 컴퓨터로 프로그래밍 언어, 블록형태의 명령어를 조합해 기초 프로그램을 제작하는 <스크래치>, 피지컬 컴퓨팅이자 하드웨어와 소프트웨어를 같이 사용해서 인베디드 교육을 하는 <아두이노>, 아이들의 상상력을 입체적으로 구현하는 <3D프린터>와 <3D펜> 등의 교육 프로그램을 진행하고 있다. 이렇게 어릴 때부터 체계적으로 배운 뒤, 고학년이 되면 하드웨어와 코딩의 개념을 이해하고 센서와 모터로 직접 전자제품을 만들게 된다. “문화센터나 방과 후 아카데미처럼 컴퓨터가 부족한 환경에서도 교육이 가능하다. 아이들에게 컴퓨터과학의 원리를 풀어놓은 게임이나 트릭요소를 결합해 쉽고 재미있게 교육하고 있다. 또 다른 교육프로그램에서 하기 어려운 분야, 즉 키트를 이용한 로봇 제작 교육, 요즘 많이 하고 있는 3D프린팅에 대한 교육 지원도 하고 있다” 이 대표는 서울, 인천, 경기 지역의 학습지원센터, 문화센터, 무한상상실, 청소년수련관 등 다양한 기관에서 20명 내외 단위로 단체수업을 하면서 제대로 된 코딩교육 교재를 만들고 있다. 

“컴퓨터 없이 수업이 가능한 아두이노 교구는 특허출원을 한 상태고, 문제해결에 필요한 알고리즘적인 사고, 그리고 사고력과 논리력, 창의력과 문제해결능력을 높이는 교재제작에 중점을 둘 것이다. 또 처음부터 바로 코딩을 가르친다기보다는, 코딩과 소프트웨어에 흥미를 갖고 주변의 문제나 일들을 컴퓨팅 사고적인 관점에서 바라보고 해결하는 능력을 길러준다는 편이 옳을 것이다” 소프트웨어 교육이 중요한 이유에 대해 이 대표는 “20년 후에는 모든 업종, 일들이 사물인터넷, IT와 연결될 것이다. 그리고 지식활용에 대한 인식도 바뀔 것이다. 지금의 의사는 주사 놓고 수술하는 이미지지만 이런 교육을 통해 의학지식과 알고리즘을 결합시켜 캡슐로봇을 직접 제작하는 의사가 되면 좋을 것” 이라고 말한다. 프로그래밍교육이 공교육의 영역에 서서히 진입하면서, 아이들 뿐 아니라 교육자를 위한 양성 연수 프로그램과 자료를 준비하고 있다는 이 대표는 작년부터 코딩교육이 많은 관심을 받고 있지만 제대로 된 교육을 위해서는 잘 만들어진 교육 콘텐츠, 수준 높은 강사, 다양한 교구를 갖춘 교육환경이 필요하다고 말한다. “교육이 단순히 지식을 습득하는 것이 아니라 다양한 지식들을 융합하여 문제를 해결하는 컴퓨팅적 사고력를 중요시 하는 방향으로 바뀌고 있다. 향후 활성화될 교육시장에 적용할 양질의 교육 콘텐츠를 만들고, 좋은 강사를 양성하는 것이 1차 목표다. 그 다음에는 도시에 있는 아이들뿐만 아니라 지방에 있는 아이들도 마음껏 코딩교육을 받을 수 있도록 온라인 교육 서비스와 찾아가는 수업 서비스를 만드는 것에 초점을 맞추고 있다.” 미래를 내다보는 교육은 컴퓨터를 다루고 활용하는 개념도 바꾸게 될 것이다. 이렇듯 이 대표의 적극적인 교육 플랫폼이 소프트웨어를 매개로 한 미래지향적인 창의 교육을 잘 이끌어가길 바라는 바이다.

Introducing step-by-step software education that develops creativity and thinking ability
The recent compulsory software education announced by the Ministry of Education is raising a demand for related materials and programmes. So CEO Lee Jae-woo of Hellosoft, who worked as the team leader in the human resource department of an IT company, jumped into making comprehensive related programmes. He says "The new law is to be enforced in elementary schools in 2017 and middle schools in 2018. The US, UK, China and some countries in South East Asia teach children computer programming in their early age. In accordance with this, we, Hellosoft, are teaching programming as well as the concept of it. However, we don't currently have enough materials available in Korea so we teach its algorithm in the way of analogue for the time being." The programmes run in Hellosoft include 'Unplugged Computing' - basic algorithm, 'Scratch' - making basic programmes with programming language and command, 'Arduino' - physical computing and imbedded education, and '3D Printer' and '3D Pen' - realizing children's imagination in 3D. Through these programmes, children can be able to understand the concept of hardware and coding, and can make electrical goods with sensors and a motor. Lee says "We can also give training where there are not enough computers available as we use various materials and games that can explain the principle of computer science. In addition, we carry out a support for robot making education and 3 D printing." At the same time, Lee is working on making comprehensive coding education materials while providing his programmes in various places such as study support center, culture center, unlimited imagination center and youth training center. And the classes are based around 20 students. Lee continues "We currently have applied a patent for Arduino material with which children can learn without a computer. We focus on maximizing children's ability on algorithm, thinking ability, logic, creativity and problem solving when making teaching materials. We do not teach children coding from the very beginning but motivate and help them improve necessary ability for it first." Regarding the importance of software education, Lee says "All of our jobs will be related to IT or IoT after 20 years.

The public recognition on the application of knowledge will also be changed. Who knows one of our students might invent a capsule robot doctor that can carry out injection and surgery in the future?" Comprehensive coding education requires quality contents, teachers and materials. Lee adds "The direction of education is changing to raising computer-like thinking ability to solve problems rather than just acquiring knowledge itself. For this, we are focusing on creating customized contents and fostering industry specialists. We then expand our service scope to online and mobile classroom." Power Korea hopes that Hellosoft will create a foundation for future coding education in Korea.
