Daebo Green Food, Daejeon Monk
Daejeon Monk puts Buddha's teaching into practice
Daebo Green Food promotes Sancheong County with Bbongsogeum
(mulberry salt)

Salt, water and oxygen are essential elements for human to live. Salt, produced in clean environments, in particular, becomes beneficial mineral in our body. Located on the foot of Jirisan Mountain, Daebo Green Food is producing the local specialty 'Bbongsogeum' while Daejeon Monk is putting Buddha's teaching into practice at the same time.

The best quality sun-dried salt and Jirisan clean water make Bbongsogeum
Sancheong has a long history and marvelous scenery of Jirisan Mountain. Daejeon Monk says "Salt is an essential element for our body to function and good salt is good for our health. I make Bbongsogeum with the best sun-dried salt and ingredients of the region by hand. I think maintaining good health with my quality salt is part of practicing Buddha's teaching. Quite recently, I, with Sancheong County and the Federation of Sancheong Bulgyosaim, held a releasing ceremony at Deokcheongang River. This is held after Sancheong Herbal Festival to keep attracting tourists. We buy young fishes from the Kimjingyu Ssogari Research Institute and we sell them when they become carps to people at KRW 1,000 and release them to the river with the buyers in every first month of the lunar year. This is part of Buddha's teaching." Daejeon Monk continued "The meaning of releasing livings things such as fish and turtle is that people practice virtue when they are still alive in preparation of their after lives. But we only release local living things in consideration of harmony with local nature." Apart from this releasing ceremony, Daejeon Monk also sells local products at the rest area nearby the county.

Bbongsogeum, made with the best sun-dried salt and
Jirisan Mountain's clean water

Sancheong County was originally two counties; Saneum and Dansung. The former is the Silla Kingdom's Jipoomchun and ruled by Gammu (the Goryeo Kingdom) and Hyeongam (the Joseon Kingdom). Saneum became a county (1895) in the King Gojong of Korea and  Dansung was merged with it in 1914. Dansung was Gwolgigun in the Silla Kingdom and was called Gwolsung in the King Gyeongdeok. In 1979, Sancheong-myeon became Sancheong-eup.

One of the most famous Korean monks 'Sungchul' was born and grew up here, and Mun Ik-jeom actually cultivated cottonseed here. Mun's father-in-law Jeong Jeon-ik's house is also located here. In addition, 'Donguibogam (Principles of Practice of Eastern Medicine written by Huh Jun) Village, Yu Ui-tae Well, historic site of Nam Myeong, and the Royal Tomb of King Guhyeong are here in Sancheong County. But today's Sancheong has become even more popular thanks to Daejeon Monk's Bbongsogeum which is attracting a great number of visitors. He says "Bobongsogeum used to be used for temple food alongside kelp and shiitake mushroom. It is really difficult to make Bbongsogeum in the traditional way, but I never want to change this traditional method. I actually gave it out to Buddhists around me or my acquaintances at first but its unique taste and quality soon spread to normal people and eventually made me establishing the current Daebo Green Food to supply it in bulk."

Building Buddhist sanctuary
Daejeon Monk hopes to build a Buddhist sanctuary in the rest area nearby the county so that he could display regional cultural and Buddhist assets. He wants to add a large parking lot and convenience facilities so that visitors can experience every corner of the county from temples, festivals to local landmarks within a 30 minute distance. Daejeon Monk says "If my suffering can give something valuable to others, it is just a small pain. In this respect, Bbongsogeum and the releasing ceremony are part of my practicing Buddha's teaching in this mortal world."
