포스코(POSCO) 직원의 자녀 교육을 목적으로 1978년 설립된 포항제철중학교는 ‘글로벌 일류시민을 양성하는 행복한 학교’를 목표로 지역사회와 국가 발전을 이끌어갈 우수한 인재를 배출해왔다. 특히 전국 최고 수준의 학력과 함께 다양한 체육활동에서도 뛰어난 성과를 창출하며 인성과 학력이 조화된 전국 최고의 명문 중학교로 손꼽히고 있다.

자기주도학습 통해 글로벌 일류시민 양성

지난 2015년 9월, 제31회 한국수학경시대회 중등부 부문에서 포항제철중학교가 대상을 수상했다. 전국 185명의 참가자 중 금상 1명, 동상 2명, 장려상 4명의 성적으로 대상의 영예를 안은 포항제철중은 1회 대회부터 올해까지 중등부에서 가장 많은 246명이 수상해 수학 명문학교의 위상을 확고히 다졌다. 38년의 역사를 가진 포항제철중은 ‘꿈과 끼를 키우는 행복한 교육’을 모토로 전국 최고 수준의 교육을 제공하며, 인성과 실력을 겸비한 글로벌 인재를 배출해왔다. 지난 2015 학력우수 및 학력향상학교로 선정되기도 했으며, 2014년부터는 자유학기제 연구학교로 지정되어 운영되며, 우수한 성과를 창출하기도 했다. 특히 포항제철중의 자유학기제 운영은 수업개선과 진로탐색을 통해 학생과 교사 간의 소통을 이끌어내고, 학교 현장의 긍정적인 변화를 이끌어냈다는 점에서 높이 평가되고 있다.

포항제철중의 교육 커리큘럼은 학습플래너 활용으로 자기주도 학습법을 교육하는 1학년, 자유학기제를 통해 진로탐색교육을 시행하고 있는 2학년, 성취평가제 및 전 교사의 진로코치화로 학생들의 진학지도를 돕고 있는 3학년 교육으로 크게 구분된다. 특히 주력하는 부분은 학생활동 중심의 교실 수업을 통해 학생들이 스스로 계획하고 학습하는 자기주도적 학습력을 배양할 수 있도록 지도하는 일이다. 그밖에도 학교에서는 교과부진학생들을 대상으로 한 개별화 수업도 진행하고 있으며, 영어·수학 과목의 수준별 수업을 통해 학생 전체의 학력신장을 도모하고 있다. 또한 영어·수학·과학·발명영재반을 운영해 학생들이 자신의 능력을 최대한 발현할 수 있는 환경을 조성하고 있다.

꿈을 키워가는 행복한 성장의 터전

포스코 교육재단에서는 매년 ‘행복한 학교 컨퍼런스’를 개최하며 한국 교육의 지평을 넓히기 위한 새로운 수업 커리큘럼과 우수 인성교육 사례를 학교 현장에 공유, 확산시키는 데 앞장서고 있다. 이에 포항제철중에서는 실천중심의 인성교육을 통해 학생들이 바른 생활습관을 형성할 수 있도록 돕고 있으며, 연간 150회 이상의 담임 상담활동과 75회 이상의 교과 상담 등을 시행하며 바른 인성교육의 모범을 세워나가고 있다. 전인득 교장은 “최근의 교육은 지나치게 입시만을 중시하는 방향으로 흐르며 학교폭력이나 청소년범죄 등 부작용을 낳고 있습니다. 저희 포항제철중에서는 전문가 초청 연수와 상담관련 연수 등을 통해 전 교사의 상담 역량을 강화해 학생들이 바른 인성과 예절을 갖춘 글로벌 인재로 성장할 수 있도록 지도하는 데에 최선의 노력을 다하고 있습니다”라고 밝혔다.

포항제철중의 교육적 다양성은 다양한 대회에서의 수상실적으로도 증명된다. 축구, 야구, 체조 등 최신 전용시설과 전문 교육진을 갖춘 포항제철중은 제42회 전국소년체육대회 야구부 우승, 제43회 전국소년체육대회 축구부, 체조부 우승, 2014 KBO총재배 전국 중학야구대회 준우승, 2014 추계 한국중등축구연맹 축구대회 우승의 금자탑을 쌓았다. 또한 ‘SW교육 선도학교 및 SW교육교사연구회’로 지정되어 체계적인 SW 교육을 펼쳐왔으며, ‘2015 신나는 SW교육 수기 공모전’에서 최우수상인 장관상을 수상하기도 했다. 전 교장은 “교육의 가장 중요한 가치는 ‘학생’에게 있다고 생각합니다. 저희는 앞으로도 학교 교육이 학생들에게 자신의 꿈과 비전을 발견하고, 이를 실현하기 위한 역량을 키워나가는 디딤돌이 될 수 있도록 최선을 다하겠습니다”라고 다짐했다. 학생중심의 교육을 통해 미래의 꿈을 키워가는 행복한 성장의 터전이 되고자 하는 포항제철중학교의 눈부신 비상을 기대해 보자.

Self-directed learning to foster globally talented students

Pohang Jecheol Middle School won the grand prize at The 31 Korea Mathematics Competition in the middle school category held in September 2015. Among the total 185 participants, Pohang Jecheol Middle School won a gold prize, two bronze prizes and four participation prizes (grand prize as a result). The school participated in the competition from the very beginning and 246 students so far have won a prize. The school boasts 38 years of history, is providing the best quality education and fostering talented students who are equipped with right personality and competence under its motto 'Happy Education That Grows Dream and Talent'. The school was appointed as an Excellent Academic Ability & Improvement School last year and as a Free Semester System Research School in 2014 and achieved a great result. The latter one in particular was highly praised for drawing up an active communication between teachers and students and educational innovation. The curriculum of Pohang Jecheol Middle School is well systematized. The first year focuses on self-directed learning, the second year on free semester system, and the third year on performance assessment and career consulting. The classes are also run on student-centered activities and the customized class for low performed students increases over all performance level especially in English and maths. The talented students' class, in addition, helps the students maximize their ability in English, maths and science.

"Grow your dream at Pohang Jecheol Middle School"

The POSCO Educational Foundation holds 'Happy School Conference' every year in order to widen the understanding about education and to share and spread innovative curriculum and cases of excellent personality education. In accordance with this project, Pohang Jecheol Middle School is holding more than 150 times of homeroom teacher consulting activities and more than 75 times of curriculum consulting every year to build a right personality education model. Principal Jeon said "Korea's education is regretfully focused on the entrance examination and a high school record. School violence and juvenile delinquency are also problems. This is the reason why we provide comprehensive consulting training programmes for teachers so that they can give effective personality education to their students." Meanwhile, Pohang Jecheol Middle School also shows a great performance in sports. The school has excellent football, baseball and gymnastics facilities with professional trainers. The baseball team won the grand prize at The 42nd National Junior Sports Festival and the runner-up prize at 2014 KBO's National Middle School Baseball Festival, the football team and the gymnastics team won the grand prize at The 43rd National Junior Sports Festival respectively, and the football team won another grand prize at 2014 Autumn Football Festival held by the Korean Middle School Football Association. In addition, the school was appointed as a Leading SW Education School and SW Education Teachers' Research School and won the Presidential Prize at 2015 SW Education Essay Contest. Principal Jeon concluded "I think the true value of education is our students. It is our job to help and encourage them find their dream, aptitude and future vision and to increase their competency and we will provide our unsparing effort for it."
