Balanced education between learning and life

Principal Cho JunMo of Handong International School

Faith-based Character education

Hangdong International School (HIS) is suggesting a new direction through character education based on Christian faith. It started as a communal home school for the children of foreign professors at Handong University in 1998, changed its name to HIS in 2001 and was accredited as an alternative school that combined elementary, middle and high schools from Gyeongsangbuk-do Office of Education in 2011. The curriculum of HIS focuses upon holistic development of a Christian worldview that has practical implications in life. The school fosters students’ heart attitude of Christ-centered and world-engaging life through chapels, Bible classes and homeroom devotions among others. The secondary Bible curriculum, for instance, intentionally integrates humanities, social sciences and the Bible in order to provide opportunities for students to learn how Biblical principles are applied and lived out in all facets of life. 70% to 80% of classes are taught in English but, Korean Language Arts and Social Studies are offered in Korean in the hope of establishing the national identity. Apart from English, the school also runs Spanish, Russian and Chinese classes so that students can develop their cross-cultural aptitude in a global world.

Pursuing diversity in unity

Other subjects of HIS include maths, music, art and sports and they give students a balanced growth. The various sports programmes are also run in leagues with numerous other international schools. The secondary division offers various elective classes of mixed grades where individual students can design their own curriculum. The classes of the 8 hour secondary education is consisted of both juniors and seniors and they can choose their own major like university students. Through the elective program, students develop wider social skills as well as an autonomous and responsible attitude towards education. Principal Cho JunMo said "The advantage of studying at HIS is at our philosophy to pursue diversity in unity. We run various Elective Courses to promote self-directed learning and encourage various club activities so that students can find and develop their unique gifts and talents. The school also provides comprehensive educational guidance focusing upon developing students’ core competencies for their long-term vision. This is in contrast to short-sighted guidance over just the existing entrance examination and school record-driven consulting. Graduates of HIS have entered various universities such as Yonsei, Sookmyung, Handong, Waseda, Carnegie Mellon and UCLA. 20% of students of HIS are children of missionaries, and the school provides huge scholarship for them thus indirectly participating in missionary work. The school is also trying to open more doors for local students. Principal Cho concluded "It is most important for us to help students live a great life. For this, we will give our utmost effort in fostering talented students who can share what they have with our society."
