Korea's first legalized food truck entrepreneur provides his knowhow

It is reported that a startup costs the owner KRW 200 to 300 million with 7 or 8 out of 10 businesses closing down within 2 years. Rapid change of trend and expensive rent are another factor that ail the startups. A good news is that there still is a way for them to start a new business with less than KRW 20 million with cookingtop already installed: it is food truck business. Korea's first legalized food truck entrepreneur CEO Ha Hyeog of Food Truck Factory says "I got an inspiration from the food trucks I saw in the Central Park, NY. I prepared to introduce the business to Korea and luckily the Park Administration legalized the business in March (enforced in September) 2014 as her first deregulation policy." One of the advantages is that you can move and hold up the truck in various places you want. You also do not need to pay the rent and people can pay by card as a card machine is installed in the truck. To spread his knowhow on the business, Ha opened Food Truck Startup Academy and explained about remodeling the truck, marketing methods, menu creating and recipe and finding hot spots. As a result, 100 young people are currently running food truck business.

Ha's knowledge in mechanical engineering enhances competitiveness of Korean type food truck

Ha remodeled 0.5 ton used truck to a food truck in 2011. Thanks to Ha's majoring in mechanical engineering in the US, Ha could easily paint and remodel the truck. With the legalization of food truck business in Korea in 2014 and the support of local government, Ha opened Food Truck Factory in Ttukseom Island in January 2015 and legally secured various places in Jamsil-dong, Anyang and Goyang. He is currently earning KRW 3 to 5 million a month with 4 trucks. He says "Registration and quality management are very important in this business. I carried out a research on street food during my 6 year stay in the US and developed simple menu which one or two persons can execute. It only takes 3 days to learn the recipe but introducing fancy menu is the key to attract customers. Currently, I made 10 menus including Swedish Hot Dog, Greek Sandwich, Philly Steak, Cup Rice, and Honey Cheese Tortilla. The price ranges from KRW 2,000 to 7,000." As the popularity on Ha's business grows, Ha appeared on numerous TV programmes. He continued "Many people want to start the business as an extra job and attack the niche markets such as breakfast for officer workers and light snack for wandering lovers. I also obtained a certificate of food wholesale and can provide ingredients at a lower price.“

After management is more important than starting

Currently, Ha is working on systematizing the Korea Food Truck Association in cooperation with 200 related people including the graduates of the academy. Ha says "I'm working with a long term perspective. There are about 3,000 food trucks in Korea and I will encourage 50% of them legally register their business. I will also bring up various problems and improvements and ask the government to give a support. I will also expand the current 40 major food truck spots with more places." Meanwhile, Ha is showing an interest to turn his company to a social enterprise. He says "When my business is well settled, I want to start to provide free meals for people in need. I also have a dream to open a related department in universities so that we can systematically promote the industry. For this, I'm discussing the process with food related departments at the moment." Food Truck business seem to go well with the current trend of simple food enhanced especially by Baek Jeong-won and an increased number of single-person household. Ha added "I once was offered by a major company to run the business indoor. But I said "No" because if I focus on making profits only, I might even lose my whole business I have built so far."
