“수학 학습이란 문제해결의 틀을 만들어가는 과정입니다”

2015년 수학 교육을 대표하는 키워드는 바로 ‘수포자’였다. 지난해 실시된 한 설문조사에 따르면 전국 초중고 학생의 과반수가 스스로를 수포자라 지칭할 정도로 문제는 심각해지고 있다. 이에 따라 수학 학습의 성취도와 학습흥미를 높이고, 공부하는 즐거움을 일깨워 줄 수 있는 혁신적인 교육법이 절실히 요구되고 있다.

‘자기화 프로그램’으로 교육의 만족도를 높이다
수학은 ‘생각하는 학문’이다. 교육과정에서 수학이 필요한 까닭은 수학을 통해 사고력, 문제해결력 등의 역량을 기르는 학문이기 때문이다. 하지만 그간 우리나라 수학교육은 계산은 잘하되 사고력, 응용력과 학습흥미도가 떨어지는 학생들을 배출하며 문제점을 노출해왔다. 이에 한국교육과정평가원에서는 지난 수능 이후 “종합적 사고력을 필요로 하는 문제들을 출제”했으며, “수능 수학의 난이도가 예년보다 높아졌다”고 발표했다. 오는 2017학년도 수능을 준비하는 학생들은 혼란에 빠질 수밖에 없게 된 것이다. 

이에 지난 2013년 송도 신도시에 개원한 노른자 프레임 수학은 학생들의 만족도와 교육의 질을 동시에 만족시킬 수 있는 교육을 추구하며, 수학 학습 패러다임의 변화를 선도해왔다. 특히 학생 스스로가 문제해결력을 기르는 것이 앞으로의 수능 수학을 대비하는 가장 좋은 전략이라고 강조하며 수포자가 없는 수학학습법인 ‘자기화 프로그램’을 개발해 학생들에게 지도하고 있다. 자기화프로그램은 총 3단계로 이루어져 있다. 먼저 1단계에서는 미리 스스로 생각하는 예습을 통해 본 수업의 집중도와 참여도를 향상시킨다. 2단계는 개념구조화를 완성하고 이를 적용, 활용하는 본격적인 문제해결 훈련을 한다. 3단계는 배운 내용을 자기화하는 익힘 단계를 거친다. 수업을 통해 배운 과정을 스스로 확인하고 되풀이하며 본인의 것으로 만드는 것이다. 이러한 과정을 6개월 이상 거친 학생들의 경우 내신 20~30점 향상, 수능 4~5등급에서 2~3등급으로의 성과를 보이고 있다.

사고력과 이해력 향상 위한 ‘완전교육’을 추구
노른자 프레임 수학의 이재환 대표는 “수포자들에게 필요한 건 교과내용의 축소가 아니라 스스로 수학학습에 흥미를 갖고 잘할 수 있는 방법을 가르치는 것입니다. 자기화 프로그램은 수학교육에 대한 여러 가지 이론을 활용하고 개선한 것으로, 문제를 해결하기 위한 사고력을 훈련하고, 이를 통해 자신감과 학습의 리듬, 동기부여가 될 수 있도록 돕는 학습 프로그램입니다”라고 설명했다. 자기화 프로그램의 핵심은 ‘예습’, ‘개념구조화’, ‘문제해결 전략노트’를 이용해 스스로 문제해결의 프레임을 구축하는 것이다. 충분한 예습을 통해 학습에 적극적으로 임할 수 있는 상태를 만들며 저명한 수학자 폴리아(Polya)의 ‘문제해결 4단계’ 원리에 ‘개념구조화’의 과정을 추가시킨 이 교육법은 서술노트를 통해 문제의 해결과정을 반복적으로 훈련하고, 결과적으로 학생들이 자연스럽게 종합적인 사고력을 키워나갈 수 있도록 돕는다. 

또한 노른자 프레임 수학에서는 보다 많은 학생들이 수학에 가깝게 다가가고, 효율적인 교육을 영위할 수 있도록 돕기 위해 다양한 수학교구의 연구와 개발에도 매진하고 있다. 교구들이 값이 비싸고 다양성이 부족한 국내 수학교육 현장의 문제를 해결하고자 하는 것이다. 이미 수수깡을 활용해 창의력과 사고력을 증진시켜주는 교구를 개발했으며, 향후 이를 수정·보완해 대중화할 계획이다. 

이재환 대표는 “앞으로도 교육과정은 변화를 겪게 될 것이고, 그로 인한 학생들의 고충도 상당하리라 생각됩니다. 이런 상황에서 중요한 것은 수학 자체가 목적이 되는 교육이 필요하며 , 이를 위한 학습활동을 펼쳐나가야 합니다.”라고 강조했다. 또한 그는 정부차원에서도 달라지는 입시제도와 교육제도에 대한 상세한 설명이 학생과 학부모에게 이뤄져야 한다고 지적했다. 학생들에게 수학의 즐거움을 알려주고, 보다 많은 가능성과 발전의 기회를 제공하기 위해 노력하고 있는 노른자 프레임 수학과 이재환 대표. 이들이 선도하는 수학교육 패러다임의 변화가 수많은 학생과 학부모들에게 새로운 희망이 되어주기를 바란다.

Internalizing Programme to enhance a sense of accomplishment
Maths is a study that requires thinking. We improve our thinking and problem solving abilities by learning maths. Korean maths education, however, rather has focused on calculation than those two above mentioned and it discouraged much the students who have less interest in studying. To improve the situation, the Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation announced that it set the exam questions for the KSAT (College Scholastic Ability Test) that can increase student's comprehensive thinking ability. As a result, it said, the level of difficulty had increased than previous year. Opened in Songdo, Incheon in 2013, Nornza Frame Mathematics (NFM) has been pursuing quality maths education by introducing a new paradigm. CEO Lee emphasizes on self-directed learning and self-problem solving abilities as the recently changed KSAT is built based on this idea and for this Lee developed his unique 'Internalizing Programme'. The programme is divided into three stages: 'Preparation Stage' to improve concentration and participation, 'Conceptualization Stage' to improve problem solving ability and 'Making It Your Own Stage'. Students going through these three stages for more than 6 months have shown an increase in academic scores by 20 to 30 and a shift to 4 to 5 degrees from 2 to 3 degrees in the KSAT. 

Pursuing a perfect education through raising thinking ability and understandability
CEO Lee continues "Shortening the contents of the textbook cannot be a solution to improve the performance of weak students in maths but self-directed learning is. It is a method that improves the drawbacks of the existing methods and can also improve student's thinking ability as well as give them a motivation." Lee's Internalizing Programme uses Preparation Stage, Conceptualization Stage and Making It Your Own Stage (problem solving strategic note)'. It is built based on mathematician Polya's 'Four Stages of Problem Solving' but with added element: Conceptualization Stage. It can naturally help students to improve their thinking ability according to Lee. Currently, Lee and his team are working on developing a variety of teaching materials to provide them at reasonable prices as most related materials in the current market lack in diversity but high in price. NFM has already developed a teaching material by using sorghum straw and is working on revision before releasing. Lee says "School curriculum will keep changing and both teacher and students need to bear this in mind. The important thing is that we need an education that can make mathematics as a tool to improve students's abilities. The government also need to clearly explain the revised KSAT to both students and school parents." Power Korea wishes Lee and NFM a prosperous 2016.
