“I always make clear what is important in my life”

Recreating traditional meanings with new order and composition

The works of Jin express her spirit and world

Artist Jin’s main theme is ‘composition’. She puts various elements, which reminds symbols and textures, and circles and lines in the square frame. She uses paints layers on layers to obscure the borders in order to emphasize its abstractness. She forms view points and spiritual elements based on shape, colour and composition and fills up the canvas with geometric patterns in monochrome. If lines, colours and light & shade can be signs, symmetry, proportion and repetition can be like grammar that consists the signs. Symmetry means similar composition or shape and proportion respective sizes and relations between the objects. Many artists exert their effort to find proportions between the parts and the whole. Repetition makes rhythm and the artist adjust it to move the view points and emotions of appreciators. Jin focuses on these elements and layers of colours and created her unique style. She uses primary colours to give friendliness and the lines attract the viewers eyes to her world of imagination.

Active presence in Chang-dong Art Village

Artist Jin is a member of the Korean Fine Arts Association Masan and the Gyeongnam Contemporary Artists. She has held 11 solo exhibitions including a special solo exhibition at the Busan International Art Fair in 2009. She is scheduled to have an invitational solo exhibition at the National Assembly in January 2016. She also participated in 300 group exhibitions including Indian Biennale, Masan Art Association’s Top Artists Exhibition and Korea Art Festa. She won numerous prizes including the Gyeongsangnamdo Fine Arts Exhibition, Sungsan Arts Exhibition, Nha Hye-suk Arts Exhibition, Masan Artists Awards and Chang-dong Art Village Artists Awards (lifetime achievement). Jin is a primary member of Masan Chang-dong Art Village (opened in 2010). Her studio is on the second floor of Masan Art Association and she has worked there for 5 years. Jin works like a retreatant. Her works displayed in India Chennai Invitation Exhibition were all sold to the Indian government. Koreans tend to like works with lines. However, Jin does not only focus on large sized works but uses various sizes and materials based on acrylic. She normally greets visitors to her exhibition and actively engages in a talk with them.

Childhood memory to be the source of her works

Artist Jin was born in Geochang County and spent her early childhood in nature. This actually became the source for her art works through geometric lines and compositional shapes. She says “I used to watch the sunlight falling into my room through the window and I saw various lines and shapes on the traditional Korean paper plastered onto the window. I imagined myself to play in that virtual space and it inspired me a lot.” She continues “Changes in colours keep happening when making a work and it creates a limitless space for the objects. This combination of sentiment and transcendence captures my heart. I don’t find a new meaning in relations between the objects but in my inner self. This means that I tend to recreate traditional meanings through new order and composition rather than copy nature itself.” Every single of Jin’s work contains her soul in unique forms and shapes and her works fill up the studio.

From a hidden jewel to a blooming artist

Art works are the avatar of the creator. Jin has become a renowned artist but she still feels a thirst in art. She says “There are many things about art that I need to dig into. I felt really small when I participated in 2014 Seoul Art Show with the fellow artists. But it stimulated my challenging spirit at the same time and became the nutrition of my art works.” She often explains about art by quoting Paul Klee’s “Art is not reproduce of what we see but the things beyond our eyes” and Pablo Picasso’s “I create things the way I think not the way I see.” Jin also explains about the important things in her life “No priorities no composition (by Kusama Yayoi)! I always remind these words whenever I feel discouraged.” Meanwhile, Jin obtained the first grade Art Therapy Qualification in the hope of giving a helping hand for those who are in need. Power Korea wishes Jin a prosperous 2016.
