[Special Interview] Mohamed Gello, Ambassador of Kenya
Korea and Kenya’s 50 years of diplomatic ties strengthens bilateral relationship

Located off the east coast of Africa, Kenya has the most various kinds of vegetation and wild animals in Africa. There are numerous national parks and wildlife refuges which invite many tourists from all over the world. Kenya is also famous for coffee plants and we can enjoy the deep taste and aroma in many franchise cafes on the street coners. Korea established diplomatic ties with Kenya on 7 February 1964 and the two countries celebrated its 50th anniversary last year. Korea’s top bilingual magazine Power Korea met Mohamed Gello, Ambassador of Kenya, and heard about the future prospect of bilateral relationship.

Korea and Kenya steadily increase the level of cooperation
Followed by the diplomatic ties in 1964, the two countries signed an agreement for medical cooperation in 1973, trade & technology cooperation in 1977, cultural cooperation in 1980 and aviation cooperation in 1981. Kenya opened the Embassy in Seoul in July 2007 and H.E. Gello took the office in February last year. He says “Kenya and Korea has steadily increased the level of cooperation in trade, investment, tourism, culture and education and we are now strengthening the cooperation through various programs. As part of this effort, both countries recently held the 3rd session of the Kenya/Korea Joint Economic Commission which provided a roadmap for bilateral cooperation in various sectors.” The volume of trade between Kenya and Korea has shown a steady growth over the years. Since the opening of the Kenya Embassy in Seoul in 2007, Kenya’s annual exports to Korea have increased from $5,115,000 in 2006 to $29,173,000 USD in 2014. At the same time, Kenyan imports from Korea have increased from $204,858,000 in 2006 to $344,539,000 as at the end of 2014. H.E Gello says “We are currently working on reducing this huge trade imbalance while finding ways to strengthen personal exchanges. For this, I have asked Korean Air to consider resuming direct flights to Nairobi from Incheon so that more businessmen and tourists can conveniently travel.”

25 Korean companies’ presence in Kenya
Currently 25 Korean companies are running their businesses in Kenya. These are Daewoo International, LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, Samsung C&T, Hyundai Engineering. Other companies are related to furniture, hotel, wig, PVC, photography, food and tourism. Home appliances and smartphones of Samsung and LG are particularly popular and they are contributing to spreading Korean brands in Kenya. On the other hand, 4 Kenyan companies relating to import & export are currently active in Korea. H.E Gello says “KOTRA is actively supporting foreign companies in Korea and I think the information on business operations, taxes and administration provided will be of great help for potential Kenyan companies planning to run a business in Korea.” H.E. Gello added “Korea achieved an economic miracle within a short period of time and we think highly of it. Also, Korea is continuously providing substantial economic aid as well as technology transfer to Kenya which is a significant part to strengthen cooperation between the two countries.”

Gello promotes Kenyan culture in Korea
The Kenyan Embassy works closely with Kenyans in Korea to exhibit and show case Kenya cultural activities with the support of the Korean Government. To celebrate the 50th anniversary, a photo exhibition titled ‘Wild Emotion’ was held at Daegu Culture & Arts Center from 17 February to 15 March last year. The displayed photos of Kenya’s nature, wildlife and safari were taken by Korean photographer Byeongtae Kim who immigrated to Kenya in 1993 and lived there for 20 years. To take this opportunity, H.E. Gello paid a visit to Mayor of Daegu on 24 February to discuss on cultural exchange between Kenya and the city. The Kenyan Embassy also participated in ‘The 13th Seoul Café Show’ held at COEX in November last year and ‘Seoul Coffee & Tea Fair’ held at aT Center in October last year to promote the excellence of Kenyan coffee. H.E. Gello says “We are also participating in KOTFA Fair every year to introduce Kenya’s tourism products and the Kenya Tourism Board regularly invites Korean tourism officials and operators to Kenya so that they can experience our rich culture and nature.” Power Korea wishes Korea and Kenya a prosperous 2016.
