[Cover Story] Sungbulsa Temple Monk Jeongin and Buddhist Priest Daewon Yoon
Sungbulsa Temple seeks enlightenment and saves the world
Priest Dukjeon delivers Buddhaghosa and is on the fourth year of Buddhist research
Sungbulsa Temple holds opening ceremony
Jeongin and Yoon lead believers to right way
The two storey building of Sungbulsa Temple is located in Jayang-ro, Gwangjin-gu, Seoul. Jeongin took over the former Buddhist sanctuary that has been there for 15 years and reorganized the temple as today. Jeongin and Yoon held opening ceremony (inviting Buddhist statue, painting and pagoda) on 23 September 2014. Jeongin used to work as an army officer but decided to devote his life to spreading Buddha’s teaching. It has been 10 years since Jeongin became a monk and he trained himself at Nawonsa Temple in Gyeongju and Haewonsa Temple in Jindo County. He then moved to Seoul and opened Sungbulsa and is running the temple with Priest Yoon. Buddhist Priest is someone who is qualified to spread the teaching of Samzang Monk and understands the study of things and nature. It is similar to evangelist and therefore Yoon is in charge of Buddhist lectures and education.
Yoon takes a PhD course in Buddhism
Seeking enlightenment and saving the world
Yoon was born in Sangju, North Gyeongsang Province and happened to have attachment to Buddhism when he was 2 years old. His grandmother heard that Yoon would live short and she took him to a Buddhist nun at Namjangsa Temple. Yoon grew up there, graduated from Chungang University and carried on training at a temple. Jeong says “The Korean Buddhist world seems to pursue worldly goods nowadays rather than training themselves. I studied the Four Pillars of Destiny for 10 years before but soon realized Buddha’s teaching was much bigger. If the former sees our lives in the span of 80 years, the latter sees the before, present and after lives. We spread Buddha’s teaching by seeking enlightenment and saving the world.” Sungbulsa Temple follows Mahayana Buddhism and prioritizes saving the world and succeeds the traditions of priests of high virtue. If Hinayana Buddhism leads people to enlightenment with the idea that I exist first before the world, Mahayana Buddhism sees I and the world as one and therefore saving the world is most important over saving oneself only.
