Chosen as Korea’s Proud Innovative People
“Stimulating creative and critical thinking is very important”
‘Who Gets the Best Grades at Seoul National University?’ creates a sensation
Most top students have high scores by rote learning
Lee challenges the dominance of passive learning in universities
Lee who wrote the famous book ‘Who Gets the Best Grades at Seoul National University?’ actually is a graduate of the same university. She served as Assistant Research Professor in the Center for Teaching and Learning at Seoul National University (SNU), Specially Appointed Associate Professor of Hokkaido University, Japan, and Visiting Scholar of University of Michigan, USA. She was also offered a place by Virginia Tech, UAS last year but came back to Korea for the benefit of her daughter. She then established Institute for Education and Innovation and wrote the book ‘Who Gets the Best Grades at Seoul National University?’ in the hope of providing helping tips for those under achieved students based on her research on top students’ study patterns when she was working for the Center for Teaching and Learning at SNU. But the result was rather shocking. Most of those who get above 4.0 prefer studying based on written text and revision. Lee says “They just wrote down what professors said without any critical point of view. On the contrary, those who demonstrated creative ideas get poor marks. I could not help but had to challenge the dominance of passive learning in universities.”
Universities should foster creative thinkers
Lee suggests solutions based on her interviews with 20 prestigious global universities
Lee says in her book “Universities should foster creative thinkers rather than passive acceptors of the existing knowledge.” Most professors at SNU deliver the knowledge they want to deliver unilaterally according to the top students. There are no questioning and challenging in a class at all. To makes things worse, professors’ performance appraisal is based on research capabilities which makes it only natural for them to be neglect on the quality of each lecture. In the dire hope of bringing up a solution to this deep-rooted prejudice and bad practice, Lee filled up half the book based on the interviews she had with 20 prestigious global universities.
“Creative and critical thinking are a must for national competitiveness”
Creative students never fear of stating their views and sharing them with others according to Lee. They have a strong will to challenge when a doubt arise in their heart. For this reason, Lee emphasizes on shifting the paradigm of the national education system in Korea. Power Korea deeply agrees with Lee and sends an ardent support for her.
