청도군특집 산동농협 이승춘 조합장

청도의 숨어있는 보석, 산딸기

새마을운동의 발상지로 유명한 청도군은 산과 물이 깨끗하여 청정 농특산물이 재배되는 것으로 유명하다. 청도 반시, 청도 복숭아 등 수많은 특산물이 재배되고 있는 가운데 청도지역에서도 기온차가 크고 당과 산의 비율이 다른 지역에 비해 적절해 산딸기 재배로 청도 알리기에 힘을 합친 이들이 있다. 이에 그 중심에 있는 산동농협의 이승춘 조합장을 만나 보았다. 

맛은 물론 영양까지 뛰어난 산동 산딸기 
여름의 길목에서만 맛볼 수 있는 산딸기. 청도군 금천면 일대에서 재배되고 있는 산딸기는 당도가 13~17브릭스(당도 단위)정도로 다른 지역에 비해 당도가 높다. 이는 토양이나 기후 등 생육조건이 알맞기 때문이다. 그러나 알차게 익어가던 산딸기도 따는 시기를 놓쳐버리면 땅에 떨어져 버린다. 현재 김해에서 출하되는 산딸기는 산딸기 재배 농민과 산동농협의 끈질긴 홍보활동으로 현재 출하되는 대부분이 서울과 수도권 지역 등 전국에서 판매되고 있다. 특히 기존의 청도산동산딸기영농조합법인과 청도산딸기협동조합이 합쳐 올해 청도산딸기연합회가 창설됐다. 이로 인해 산딸기의 질적 향상뿐만 아니라 수량 확보가 안정적으로 됨에 판로가 넓어지게 되었다. 농협에서 40여년을 근무하며 청도 산동산딸기영농조합법인의 대표이사를 역임하기도 한 이승춘 조합장은 “전직 조합장과 김해 상동에서 산딸기 농사를 짓던 사람들과 같이 의기투합해 고령화된 농촌에 노동력과 경영비가 적게 들면서 최대의 수익을 올릴 수 있는 작목을 찾던 중 건강기능성 농산물로 각광 받고 있는 산딸기를 선택했습니다. 산딸기는 심은지 1년 만에 수확이 가능하고 방제 등을 할 필요가 거의 없습니다. 따라서 경영비 투입이 적은데다 무엇보다 판매가격이 높아 고소득 작목으로 꼽히기 때문입니다”고 설명했다. 청도지역의 산딸기나무는 굵지 않고 약하며 과실이 다소 크지는 않다. 이는 김해에서 들여온 같은 산딸기나무와 같은 품종이지만 화학물질이나 호르몬제를 이용하지 않는 자연재배를 하기 때문이다. 뿐만 아니라 금천면과 운문면 일대는 수원보호지역 지정되어 화학물질을 일절 사용하지 않는 친환경 재배방법으로 산딸기를 재배하고 있어 맛을 물론, 품질까지 인정받고 있다. 하지만 이렇게 질 좋은 산딸기이지만 몇 가지 풀어야 될 숙제가 있다. 우선 25일 정도만 수확할 수 있는 시기를 최대 3개월까지 늘이는 것이다. 이를 해결하기 위해서는 비가림 시설이나 하우스 시설을 도입해야 하는데 시설비용이 만만치가 않다. 또 현재 자체적으로 농민과 농협이 연계해 홍보하는 것을 청도군과 연계해 체계적이며 대대적으로 홍보를 해 질 좋은 산동 산딸기를 알리 필요가 있다.  

지역민과 함께하는 산동농협
운문면과 금천면에 있는 두 개의 농협이 통합하며 생긴 산동농협은 산딸기 뿐 아니라 청도의 대표적인 특산물인 청도 반시를 생산, 판매하고 있다. “청도에서도 운문면과 금천면은 다른 지역에 비해 일조량이 풍부해 청도에서 생산되는 같은 반시라도 더욱 쫄깃해 그 맛이 특별합니다. 특히 산동농협 조합원들이 직접 생산한 감을 고집과 정성으로 만든 제품으로 전국으로 판매되고 있습니다.” 최근, 서울과 대구 등 대도시에서 조합원들과 함께 ‘산동의 감마을 반건시’를 홍보해 큰 호응을 얻기도 했다. 

지역민으로써, 조합장으로써 청도 산동의 반시와 산딸기를 알리기 위해 밤낮으로 노력하고 있는 이승춘 조합장. 정직한 마음으로 농사를 지어 질 좋은 제품을 팔기위해 땀 흘렸던 초심의 마음으로 항상 임한다는 그의 마음처럼 산동의 반시와 산딸기가 청도의 특산물로 자리매김할 수 있기를 기대해본다.

Strawberry, the hidden jewel of Cheongdo
Delicious and nutritious Cheongdo strawberry
If you are a strawberry lover and prefer sweeter ones, you are highly recommended to try Cheongdo strawberry which has 13-17 brix (sugar) higher than the strawberries produced in any other region in Korea. This is because Cheongdo County provides ideal conditions for strawberries to grow. However, the right time of picking is more important than conditions. Currently, all the wild berries produced in Cheongdo are being sold in the capital area thanks to the farmers and Sandong NongHyup’s continuous promotion. Especially, the establishment of Cheongdo Wild Berry Association has much improved the quality and the steady production. The association is an integration of previous Cheongdo Sandong Wild Berry Farming Cooperative and Cheongdo Wild Berry Cooperative. President Seungchun Lee of Sandong Nonghyup, who has worked for Nonghyup for 40 years and served as Chairman of the former cooperative, says “I and some of passionate people tried to find a profitable crop and we chose strawberry as we can cultivate within a year after seeding and we don’t need to use chemicals to prevent diseases.

It means that we can save management cost but make more profits as the price of strawberry in the market is relatively high.” The strawberry trees in Cheongdo are thin and the fruits are not that big. This is because the trees came from Gimhae and we don’t use any chemical substance or hormones. In addition, the cultivation area is designated as water source protection area so we can only use eco-friendly cultivation method. However, they need to expand the cultivation period up to 3 months from normal 25 days. For this, they are planning to introduce vinyl house facilities which will cost them a leg. They also need to promote the product in cooperation with Cheongdo County rather than at the individual or cooperative level.  

Sandong Nonghyup grows with residents
Apart from producing wild berries, Sandong Nonghyup produces and sells Cheongdo flat persimmon. Lee says “Unmun-myeon and Geumcheon-myeon (the location of the farm) in Cheongdo particularly have more sunlight which provides a better and a more chewy taste than other persimmons even in Cheongdo.” Lee recently held promotional events in major cities including Seoul and Daegu and the products are sold nationwide.
