[Special Interview] Tomáš Husák, Ambassador of the Czech Republic
25 years of Korea-Czech Republic diplomatic ties to deepen exchanges
The Czech Republic spreads its rich culture to Korea

The Czech Republic boasts many of globally renowned figures such as Franz Kafka, Milan Kundera, Karel Capek, Antonin Dvorak and Alphonse Mucha. However, for many Koreans, the country is better known through a hit Korean drama ‘Lovers of Prague’ (2005) which is still attracting a significant number of visitors to the city and the other regions of the country. This year marks 25th anniversary of Korea-Czech Republic diplomatic relations and Power Korea met Ambassador Tomáš Husák and heard about the present and the future of bilateral relations.

Park and Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka summit in February
President Park and Czech Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka held a bilateral summit at Cheong Wa Dae on February 26 this year. The two leaders announced in a joint statement that they would expand cooperation on politics, economy and defense, and upgrade the two countries' relationship to a "strategic partnership”. The two sides signed memoranda of understanding covering diplomacy, national defense and the railroad industry. All aimed at strengthening cooperation in those three areas. Meanwhile, starting his term in Seoul in September 2014, H.E. Tomáš Husák, ambassador of the Czech Republic had a meeting with Taeyeol Jo, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs in October 2014. H.E. Husák said that he would do his best to promote bilateral cooperation during his term in Seoul and Jo in response answered that he welcomed H.E. Husák who was a specialist in economy & trade and Asian affairs and said that both parties would draw a substantial cooperation. Most recently, on 28 October, 2015 the representatives of City Halls of Praha 1 and Jongno-gu signed MoU about cooperation between the districts. The sister-district will extend contacts in economic, cultural, administrative and other areas. The delegation of Praha 1 visited Mugyewon, Park Nosu Art Museum and Gyeongbok Palce during its 6 day stay in Seoul.

Korean heavy industries and manufacturers’ presence in the Czech Republic
Since the diplomatic ties in 1990, Korea and the Czech Republic have signed numerous agreements. In 1994, they signed on waiver of visas and on cultural cooperation followed by cooperation in science and technology in 1995 and the cooperation for peaceful use of nuclear energy in 2001 just to name a few. In 2010, the Republic of Korea confirmed its position of the 4th biggest trade partner of the Czech Republic among the non-European countries after China, US and Japan. Also, Korea is the 4th biggest investor into the Czech economy since 1993 with 7 per cent share of all foreign investment. Bordered closest to Western Europe, the Czech Republic has a strong economic infrastructure and excellent industrial base with which it has invited many of Korean heavy industries and manufacturers. Industries such as transport equipment, machinery, glass and petrochemistry were particularly strong in the Czech Republic but the country experienced a downturn in heavy industry production while an increase in food, consumer goods and home appliances. H.E. Husák said “There is a strong presence of Korean companies in the Czech Republic. These are Doosan, Hyundai, Kia, Samsung, Daewoo International, POSCO, Korean Air, Hanjin and Sungwoo Hitech (car parts). They are contributing to boosting economic cooperation between the two countries.”

The largest number of Korean tourists to the Czech Republic
Korean tourists are the top contributor to the tourism industry in the Czech Republic with nearly 200,000 last year and 120,000 during the first half of this year which is the largest number among other Asian nationalities to visit the country. To accommodate the number of the tourists, direct flights are running between Incheon and Prague 6 times a week daily. The Czech Republic has a beautiful landscape and splendid cultural heritages including Prague Castle, Hoffburg Palace`s Garden and Prague Old Town Square and the country is often called as ‘the heart of Europe’. H.E. Husák said “The explosive popularity of the Czech Republic to Korean tourists might be ascribed to a hit Korean drama ‘Lovers of Prague’. Another factor might be that Prague was relatively less damaged from German air raid during WWII and many buildings and streets preserve their original forms.”

To deepen the cultural exchanges, and on the occasion of 25th Anniversary of the diplomatic relations, the Embassy of the Czech Republic and Seoul oratorio held a concert in September 7 at Seoul Art Center. As a series event, the concert started last July at Seoul Arts Center and Prague and at the Birthhouse of Antonín Dvořák in Nelahozeves in August. Also, a Czech comic exhibition was held with great success at the 18th Bucheon International Comics Festival and famous Czech artists participated in Nami Island International Children's Book Festival to give an opportunity to children to practice their skills. In August this year, many of Czech Film such as ‘Baby box’, ‘Children of Flamenco’, and ‘The Magic Voice of a Rebel’ was presented at the 11th Jecheon International Music & Film Festival. H.E. Husák said that he would give his utmost effort in promoting various cultural exchanges and economic cooperation between Korea and the Czech Republic until he finishes his term in Seoul.
