사람이 태어난 연(年), 월(月), 일(日), 시(時)의 사주(四柱)는 사람을 하나의 집에 비유해 그 집의 네 기둥으로 보아 붙여진 명칭이다. 사람의 운명과 길흉화복의 운세를 알아보는 학문인 명리학과 사주팔자를 통해 사람들은 자신의 앞일과 운명을 좋게 만들기 위해 많은 노력을 다한다. 특히 얼마 전 민족의 대명절인 추석 연휴에 일가친척이 모여 진학, 취직, 결혼 등 못 다한 이야기를 나눈 뒤 연휴를 맞아 자신의 사주를 보기 위해 전국 각지에서 유명한 철학관을 찾는 이들이 늘어나고 있다. 전주에서 사주 잘 보는 곳으로 유명한 지성철학관은 최근 확장 오픈하고 대규모 시설을 갖춰 연일 전국에서 모여든 손님들로 인해 좋은 평을 얻고 있다. 월간파워코리아는 10월호를 맞아 지성철학관 임화 선생을 만나 특별 인터뷰를 진행했다.

1. 철학원을 확장 오픈했는데, 어떠한 계기였는지?
기존에 있던 공간은 사무실이 오픈된 공간이라 내담자들을 위한 비밀 보장이 안됐다. 이대로는 심도 있는 상담이 안 되겠다는 생각이 들어 옮기려는 마음을 먹었다. 새로 오픈한 철학원은 넓은 대기공간에서 자유롭게 커피도 마시면서 기다릴 수 있고, 상담 시에는 사무실 문을 닫고 상담을 진행할 수 있어 반응이 좋다. 또 가격도 일반상담 5만원으로 저렴하게 상담을 진행할 수 있다.

2. 각지에서 꾸준히 손님이 찾아오는데, 지성철학관의 경쟁력은 무엇인지?
명리학 공부를 하면서 제일 어려운 것이 좋은 사주인지 나쁜 사주인지 가리는 것이다. 기존의 명리학이 해석을 잘해놨는데 구분이 잘 안 되고 갖은 이유를 끌어다가 이 사람은 이래서 성공했다는 이야기를 한다. 극단적으로 안 좋은 사주에도 장점이 하나씩은 있다. 좋은 사주는 좋은 사주대로 나쁜 사주는 나쁜 사주대로 이야기하는 것이 지성철학관의 모토다. 사주에서 마지막에 통용되는 것이 인연이다. 나무가 많은 사주를 흙을 만나야 하듯이 권력 있는 사람 옆에 있으면 자동으로 출세한다.

3. 좋지 않은 사주를 가진 사람이 자신의 운명을 깨고 나갈 수 있는 방법은?
사주는 자신에게 정해진 길이기 때문에 스스로 운명을 바꾸기는 힘들고 오직 사람을 통해서만 가능하다. 성공적인 운명을 위해서는 주변의 환경까지 맞아야 한다. 높은 자리에 올랐기 때문에 잘못된 사람도 있고 경쟁에서 밀리는 사주를 타고나는 사람이 있다. 그래서 인연이 더욱 중요한 것이다.

사주가 약한 사람은 2인자로서는 훌륭한 능력을 발휘할 수 있지만 혼자 있으면 그 사주가 제대로 발휘되지 못한다. 그를 이끌어 줄 수 있는 강한 사주의 사람이 필요하며, 얼마나 좋은 유대관계와 인연을 맺느냐에 따라 상당히 유동적일 수 있다. 또 내가 물이 많은 사주를 타고났다면 사업 파트너나 배우자 등은 상대적으로 물을 막아줄 수 있는 흙이 많은 사주를 가진 사람이 좋다. 또 나무와 물이 가까워 꽃이 피어나는, 이른바 ‘유정’한 사주는 극히 일부만이 지닌 좋은 사주로서 이러한 사람을 가까이 하면 자신의 운을 틔울 수 있다. 

4. 사주와 환경의 영향이나 상관관계는 어떤가?
나쁜 사주를 타고났다고 해도 부모가 돈이 많아 재산을 물려줄 수 있고 뒷바라지가 가능하다면, 비록 본인 스스로가 이룰 수 있는 것이 없다고 해도 살아가는 데에는 문제가 없다. 아무리 좋은 사주를 타고났어도 환경적 요인이 뒷받침되지 않는다면 이룰 수 없는 것도 있다. 또 극단적으로 나쁜 환경에 있었기 때문에 성공할 수 있었던 사주도 있다.

중요한 것은 운명을 개척하는 환경에서 인연이 가장 큰 부분을 차지한다는 것이다. 분명히 고위공직에 올랐어도 나쁜 사주를 타고난 사람이 많지만 그를 키워줄 수 있는 강한 인물이 주변에 있었기에 성공할 수 있었던 것이다. 사주가 약한 사람들이 혼자서 사업을 할 수 없다는 것도 마찬가지다. 사주가 강하고 결단력이 있는 사람과 함께 사업을 일궈 나간다면 크게 성공하지는 못하더라도 어느 정도의 수준을 달성할 수 있다.

5. 앞으로의 특별한 계획이 있다면?
사주 풀이에 있어 무엇보다 솔직한 답을 주기 위해 노력한다. 좋지 않은 사주를 좋다고 해서는 안 된다고 생각한다. 사주를 보려는 사람들 대부분이 운명을 바꾸기 위해 노력하는데 바꿀 수 있을 때 바꿔야 한다. 또한 주변 환경도 잘 맞아야 하기 때문에 이번에 확장 이전을 한 만큼 지성철학관을 찾는 많은 사람들에게 더욱더 많은 도움을 줄 수 있는 길을 모색하고자 한다.

임화 선생은 인터뷰 동안 사람이 타고나는 사주를 극복할 수 있는 것은 오직 인연뿐이라는 말을 거듭 강조했다. 운명을 개척해가는 사람의 힘은 결국 인연에서 나오며 설사 힘든 사주를 갖고 있다 하더라도 자신을 키워줄 수 있는 사람을 만나면 좋은 영향을 받을 수 있기 때문이다. 다년간에 걸친 연구 끝에 항상 솔직하고 핵심을 찌르는 사주풀이로 전국에 널리 알려진 임화 선생의 지성철학관에는 주말이나 연휴를 가리지 않고 연일 예약이 빗발치고 있다. 최근에는 전국의 내로라하는 정치인들이 내년 총선을 준비하며 발품을 팔아 찾아오기까지 한다. 이번 확장 오픈을 통해 더욱 높아진 명성으로 전국 각지에서 손님을 모으고 있는 지성철학관이 대한민국에 사주풀이의 올바른 길을 제시할 수 있기를 마음 깊이 바란다.

[Feature story] Master Im Hwa at Jiseong Fortuneteller’s 
Jiseong Fortuneteller’s, well-known in Jeonju for Saju, has reopened on a larger scale.
One’s lot can be changed by karma. 

The Four Pillars, meaning the year, month, day and hour when one is born, is the name that refers to the four pillars of a house by likening the person to a house. People make many efforts to improve their future path and lot through the science of fame and wealth and the Four Pillars (saju) and the Eight Characters, which are the science of knowing one’s fortune, good or ill luck. Especially, after the recent Chuseok holiday when all family relatives in the country gathered together for the festive day and caught up talks about entering upon studies, job seeking, marriage, etc., it is said that many of them visited noted fortunetellers’ around the country to have their saju told. Jiseong Fortuneteller’s, located in Jeonju and well reputed for saju, has recently reopened the shop in a bigger and more centralized venue, receiving good response from customers from around the country. In this October issue, Power Korea Monthly met master Im Hwa, president of Jiseong Fortuneteller’s, for a special interview.  

1. You reopened the shop in a bigger venue. What made you think of it? 
In the past, the office was an open space and it was not possible to ensure secrecy for comers to talk. I decided to move because the structure didn’t allow in-depth counsel. This new one appeals to customers because they can spend time in a wide waiting room drinking coffee freely and carry on counseling with the office door closed. Besides, as to price, they can get a consultation inexpensively at 50 thousand won for ordinary cases. 

2. Customers seem to be visiting here from all around the country. What is your competitive edge? 
The most difficult part of the science of fame and wealth is to tell between good or bad saju. Even though the existing science of fame and wealth did a good interpretation, some fortunetellers don’t tell between good and bad and say that a person has succeeded for any and every reason they can derive. To put extremely, even each poor saju has one merit. It is the motto of Jiseong to tell good or bad saju as it is. The last good thing for saju is karma. As saju with many trees has to meet earth, one is very likely to get on in life when in the presence of a powerful man. 

3. How can a person with poor saju break through his lot? 
Since saju is the path forward fixed for one, it is hard to change his lot on his own except by another person. A successful lot requires one even to fit in with his surroundings. Some tend to go wrong just because they have risen to a high standing while others are born with the saju of being beaten in competition. That’s more reason why karma is important. 

Even a person with weak saju can exercise an excellent ability as number two but his saju doesn’t work properly by himself. So he needs a person with strong saju who can lead him along, which can be rather fluid by how good a bond and relations he makes. Besides, if you are born with saju of much water, you need to have a business partner or spouse with saju of much earth that can stop the water relatively. And saju of so-called ‘Yoojeong,’ close enough to tree and water to flower, is a good saju possessed by only a few so you can have better luck by being friendly with such a person.            

4. What is the effect of saju and environment, and their correlation? 
If one is born with poor saju but if his parents have so much money that they can leave property and support him, he has no problem in getting along although there is nothing he can do for himself. However good saju one may be born with, there is something he cannot achieve unless he is backed up by environmental factor. Also, there is saju with which one has been able to succeed in life because he was in an extremely poor environment. 

What matters most is that karma takes the biggest part in the environment in which to work out one’s own destiny. Among those who have risen to a high-ranking government post, there are many who were born with poor saju. He has been successful only because he has a strong person nearby who can build him up. The same goes for those who have too poor saju to do business alone. If he takes care of business with a person who has strong saju and resolution, he can achieve a fine level, though not a big success. 

5. Do you have any particular plan for the future? 
Among others, I am doing my best to give a straightforward answer in interpreting saju. We fortunetellers should not be allowed to say that some poor saju is good by manipulation. Most people who have their fortune told are trying to change their lot, but they must remember that they should do so while they can. Besides, they also should have their surroundings fit enough. So taking this opportunity of relocation by expansion, I am going to find a way to help visitors to Jiseong more.

During his interview, master Im Hwa emphasized repeatedly that the only way to overcome one’s innate saju is karma. It is because man’s power to improve his lot ultimately comes from karma and because, even though one has poor saju, he can receive good influence if he meets another who can build him up. For Jiseong, there is flood of reservations for all the year round, regardless of weekends or holidays, because he is widely known across the country for interpreting saju straightforwardly and to the point based on his research for many years. Lately, even well-established politicians of the country visit master Im Hwa themselves in preparation for the general election next year. Jiseong Fortuneteller’s drawing many people from around the country with a higher fame through this relocation is certain to present the right path to explaining saju for Korea.
