Eco-friendly technology is a future industry
Rubber is widely used as one of the core materials in almost all the industries. Thanks to the material’s elasticity, sealing performance and shock absorbtion, many research centers in the world are carrying out related R&D for a better use of rubber. Among them is Organic Elastic Body Research Institute at Gyeongsang National University. As one of the top research institutes in the field, the institute is equipped with pilot facilities that are needed for synthetic rubber and processing. The researches are mainly focused on the fields of eco-friendliness and future energy. ‘Waste Vegetable Oil-based Bio Elastic Body Manufacturing Technology Development’, for example, is a research, related to eco-friendliness and sustainable growth which is regarded as an important area at the moment. Especially the oil shortage is one of main problems in the world and it is closely related to rubber industry and therefore the development of bio elastic body is one of the core tasks for people to achieve. ‘High Intercepting Elastic Body Construction Control Technology’, for another example, is to improve structural vulnerability of the existing elastic materials which is widely used for intercepting functional materials. It is a highly necessary technology for future industries as it prevents energy from unnecessary loss while increases its efficiency. 

Development of rubber plastic composite material technology by using waste tires
The institute obtained 68 rubber related patents and published 10 books. Some of the patents have actually been used to make products. The institute has achieved remarkable research results include a development of ‘Used Tire Fine Grinding Technology’ that grinds tires in room temperature. In fact, the existing rubber materials used liquid nitrogen because the room temperature grinding method cannot grind it down to 60mesh. In order to solve the high costs it generates, the institute developed a technology that can grind it down to 80mesh. The institute also developed ‘Pressing Type Used Tire Grinder’ for the first time in the world and it is expected to significantly increase productivity through a continuing process.

In addition, the institute developed a technology to recycle used tires and waste plastic in the form of TPV(thermo- plastic vulcanizate) for the use of precast pavers and soundproof and dust tight. This technology is highly praised for the eco-friendly disposal and recycling of used tires. The institute also developed ultrasonic modifier and rubber modifying technology and commercialized related products. Currently, the institute is focusing on the development of ‘Futuristic Robot (Adroid Robot) Skin’. The Korean robot industry has won numerous prizes at various international competitions with cutting edge technology and the robot industry is regarded as one of growth engines of the nation. The institute’s ‘Emotional Robot’ and ‘Characterized Robot’ which have skin like human being will significantly contribute to changing our lives innovatively. Prof. Kim said “Research on organic elastic body is experiencing a down turn at the moment but we are proud of fostering new talents in the field.” Power Korea hopes that the passion and effort of Kim and his team will bear good fruit.
