[Special Interview] Writer Gwangsup Jeong
'Father and Daughter' embraces a harsh life
Ardent love story of a father moves the hearts of people
Jeong's autobiographical novel 'Father and Daughter' attracts many readers

The harsh life realistically written on the paper
Writer Gwangsup Jeong, who is captivating the hearts of people with his autobiographical novel 'Father and Daughter', had an unusual career: a mobster. When the government declared a war on gangsters in 1992, he turned himself in and served his sentence in jail for 3 and a half years. Ironically, this served as a turning point for him as he read 3,000 books (one a day) during the imprisonment. He read Jeonghwa Park's 'Records of the Three Kingdoms', Gyeongsook Shin's 'The Solitary Room' and Ernest Hemingway's 'The Old Man and the Sea'. He published his first novel 'The Sun and the Shade' and the recent 'Father and Daughter'.

Jeong's mother took care of his daughter while he was serving a sentence in jail.
The grandmother played a mother and friend for Jeong's daughter. But when she heard the news that her grandmother passed away, she suffered much from depression which caused complications: she needed to receive a liver transplant to live. Jeong tried to give his liver but the doctors were negative as he might lose his life. Frustrated by the harsh reality that she could not carry out her jazz ballet in her university, she tried to commit suicide. The heart filled with sorrow and suffering, Jeong started to write down his painful emotion on the paper word by word.

Ardent love story of a father moves the hearts of readers
Drama and movie production is under way

'Father and Daughter' embraces sorrow and suffering of all parents and children in this epoch of ours. "She was about to start her journey. Can't she be at least given a change to know about life before she departs this world?" has made many readers brim their eyes with tears.

Jeong said "I received a lot of messages from my readers and I really appreciate it. It is a great feeling to have that my story moved many people. Like they wished me, I will keep writing good stories to share."

Currently, Jeong is flooded with suggestions to make the story into a drama and movie. Jeong said it might be a good idea to give the rest of the story through a drama or film.

Meanwhile, Jeong is preparing for his next work 'Love that embracing the star (tentative)', a story about his married daughter. The reason 'Father and Daughter' moved many readers is because of Jeong's truthfulness about his life. Power Korea also is looking forward to seeing another of Jeong's brilliant work. Jeong recently finished Korea University's 'Excellent Lecturer Course' and is being active as a lecturer.
