The Ministry encourages father's sharing in childrearing
Gender Equality and Family Minister Heejung Kim held a meeting with a group of fathers who share childcare 'Better Father Than Flower' at Korea Press Foundation to discuss father's participation in childreaing. The group is consisted of 20 fathers whose profession ranges from officer workers, self-employees to professionals. The group vowed to promote a balanced social conception between work and family and responsibility in housework and childcare at the Gender Equality Week Ceremony. The fathers in the group shared their knowhow and experience in childrearing and suggested improvement methods of men's participation. Youngbin Go, an officer worker father of four children, said "People look at me with strange eyes which I think is their prejudice." Minister Kim said "People regarding housework and childrearing as the job for women is the biggest obstacle in addition to their excuse of working over time at night. The Ministry is conducting a campaign for 'Leaving work on time for family' every Wednesday and promoting paternity leave and reflexible work hours", adding that "I ask you (the group) to take the initiative in encouraging fathers to share housework and childcare and I will reflect your opinions and suggestions in government policies."

The Ministry provides knowhow on childrearing
Women & Culture In Network held an event called 'I am a happy working daddy' on August 21 at Microsoft Korea as part of Gender Equality and Family Minister Heejung Kim's '2015 Gender Equality & Social Participation of Women Project'. The rate of paternity leave in Korea is very low (5.1%) despite an increased public interest and the event invited fathers from the U.S. and Sweden alongside Korea. Starting with a video image that follows a daily schedule of both Korean and Swedish fathers, the event held an invitation lecture, presentation and group discussion (5 fathers). According to an actual condition survey, conservative work environment appeared to be the biggest obstacle (48.1%) and it is an urgent matter to change the way we understand work and family as well as government's systematic support and promotion.

Deputy Minister of Gender Equality and Family Yonghyeon Gwon said "It is quite encouraging that the number of paternity leave has increased by 40.7% compared to last year although the rate is still much lower than maternity leave. We hope that the event will improve social recognition on men's responsibility and participation in housework and childrearing and encourage companies to support the campaign."
