Prof. Youngran Chang at Gachon University
Singing the 70th anniversary of independence and unification
Unification is for all to achieve with one mind

'The Story of One Nation in Music'
80 of popular songs, gagok (Koreanized Italian song), folk song and children's song

The Korean modern history had to go through a tough time of foreign invasion, war, division of nation, industrialization and rapid economic growth in order. Talking about music during these turmoil period, the songs made and sang in the Japanese colonial era, regretfully yet valuably, reflects the phase of the times.

A PhD Prof. Youngran Chang is teaching students the history of accounting and modern society & economy at Graduate School of Gachon University. But more of her fame comes for her book 'The Story of One Nation in Music' published in March last year. With a greater interest in Korea's unification, she has been working in the National Unification Advisory Council for 20 years with 10 years serving as a five term chairwoman. She pushed forward various activities such as unification concert & banquet and bazaar for North Korean defectors. During her service in the organization, Chang naturally came to know that there were many songs about unification regardless genre.

She said "Many of Korean modern songs are closely related to unification with the lyrics covering from the independent movement, the joys and sorrows of the colonial people, the liberation, the war and division, the pain of the separated families, the backlash against merciless economic development to desire for unification. Some songs appear to be about love but the lyrics are metaphor of one nation." The book contains 80 of Chang's exclusively chosen songs. Gathering a momentum by the book, Prof. Chang held numerous lectures and concerts. The audience said that they were touched and learned untold stories about unification and related music thanks to Prof. Chang.

'2015 Peaceful Unification Concert' marks 70 years of independence and division
People's wish to hear more songs of liberation and unification

The National Unification Advisory Council (NUAC) Gyeonggi, in which Chang is serving as an important member, held '2015 Peaceful Unification Concert' marking 70 years of independence and division on August 14, 7p.m. at Gyeonggi Arts Center. The concert embraced the colonial ear, liberation, war, division and economic growth. Hosted by announcer Dongkun Kim, the concert was added excitement by vocalist Dongkyu Kim, singer Hyeonmi Ju and Wundo Seol, and Gyeonggi Children's Choir. The NUAC also held a peaceful unification concert for soldiers of Defence Communication Command Force at Gwacheon Citizen's Hall in November 2014 and a 'unification concert in story' for displaced people and Gwacheon citizens at Salvation Army Gwacheon Nursing Home in December 2014. Chang also gave lectures at Medical School of Konkuk University in January 2015 and a 'unification story in music' at North Korean Women Defectors Happiness University in June 2015 and received a warm reception.

Chang said "Unification in fact is to see through the joys and sorrows of the Korean people and people should know the true meaning of independence through the lyrics of the Liberation Song as this year marks the 70th anniversary of independence." Written by Inbo Jeong, the Liberation Song starts with Yongha Yoon's lyric: Let us touch the soil again/ dancing is the sea/ oh my dearest/ what can I do. Jeong tells us not to forget the disgraceful history but protect the country forever in the song.

One Korea goes global over geographical limitation
"I will devote my life to my country's unification and prosperity"

Chang grew her dream of unification under the influence of his father whose hometown is in Sinuiju, North Pyongan Province, North Korea. She said "Korea was the poorest country in the world right after the Korean War. But we achieved an economic miracle with challenging sprite and New Village Movement. Korea has not many recourses. But like we did the Miracle of the Han River, we can achieve unification and we have to march towards the world over geographical limitation. I get especially emotional when watching the painful isolation of those whose hometown is in the North like my father and I hope that they will see and meet their separated family members, if still alive, and hometown one or more time before they die."

Chang added "Korea achieved the Miracle on the Han River through rapid industrialization and New Village Movement. Like Germany brought unification through the Miracle on the Rhein River, we also can do the same. The unification will promote Gaeseong Industrial Complex and other complexes in the North to be global and raise the economic status of the North equivalent to the South. The KTX will bring us to Europe from Busan through Seoul, Pyongyang, China and Russia. The Miracle on the Han River will become the miracle of the Taedong River or Amnok River and the world will call us as The Great Korea. The unification will be possible by our sincere wish, strong market economy, liberal democracy, constitutional state and steadfast national defence."

Prof. Chang is also serving as vice chairwoman of the Korea Accounting Information Association, member of the Policy Advisory Committee of the Youido Institute and member of the Conciliation Committee of the Suwon District Court. Currently, she is writing a book about 'The History of Economic Development in Music (tentative)'.

Serving as manager of Evergreen International Short Film Festival
'The History of Economic Development in Music' being published serially on The Tongil Shinmum

Chang, as the manager, successfully held the 8th Evergreen International Short Film Festival last October in Ansan. The festival was inspired by Yongshin Choi, a ethnic enlightenment activist and educator who said "Knowledge is power, learning is bread and butter." The main character Youngshin Choi in the novel Evergreen Tree written by Hun Shim is the incarnation of Yongshin Choi. Bearing the spirit of Choi, Prof. Chang passionately managed the festival.

Meanwhile, she is writing 'The History of Economic Development in Music' at the moment and it is being published serially on the Tongil Shinmum. It contains stories about the songs of 'National Anthem of the Korean Empire', 'Bird! Bird! Blue Bird', 'The Songs of Anhae/ The Songs of Annae(wife)' and 'Parting Busan Station'. The series is really meaningful as this year marks the 70th anniversary of liberation.

Power Korea hopes that Prof. Chang will make a great contribution to achieving unification.
