‘GPS 프로젝트’로 교육의 바른 길을 찾다
스스로 탐구하여 학습하는 글로벌 인재 양성

최근 몇 년간 학교 교육은 많은 변화를 겪어왔다. 그동안 학교 교육이 지나치게 경쟁 지향적이고, 지식 전달 위주의 교육에 편중됐다는 지적이 계속되어왔기 때문이다. 이에 포항제철서초등학교는 학생들 저마다의 특기와 적성을 살려주는 차별화된 교육을 통해 대한민국의 미래를 이끌어갈 정직하고 창의적인 어린이 육성에 힘쓰고 있다. 

新나는 꿈찾기 프로젝트, GPS Happy School
지난 1987년 개교 이래, 포항제철서초등학교는 지역의 대표적인 명문 초등학교로서 포항시의 교육 문화를 선도해왔다. 특히 ‘자주인, 창의인, 도덕인, 건강인’이라는 교육목표 아래 ‘기초 기본이 바로 설 수 있도록 길을 찾아주는 교육(General principles of Education)’, ‘학력과 창의력을 키우는 길을 찾아주는 교육(Proficient Education)’, ‘지역주민과 함께하는 교육(Serve the community)’이라는 주제로 ‘GPS Happy School’의 구현을 주창해왔다. 

GPS 프로젝트란 ‘참되고 바른 교육의 길을 제대로 찾아 간다’는 뜻으로 체험 중심의 다양한 인성교육 프로그램과 체력 강화를 위한 기초체력 프로그램의 ‘G교육’, 맞춤형 학력 향상 프로그램과 창의력 향상 프로그램의 ‘P교육’, 지역사회 및 학부모와 연계해 교육공동체를 구현하는 ‘S교육’으로 구성된다. 포항제철서초등학교의 석선애 교장은 “최근의 학교 교육은 학력과 창의력, 인성뿐만 아니라 친구와 부모, 지역사회와의 조화로운 관계 속에서 올바른 인재로 성장하기 위한 융합 교육을 요구하고 있습니다. 저희는 아이들이 가진 꿈과 끼를 계발하고, 자신의 역량을 펼쳐나갈 수 있는 교육환경을 제공하기 위해 최선의 노력을 다하고 있습니다”라고 밝혔다.

꿈과 마음, 끼를 키워가는 1% 독서교육
미래를 이끌어 갈 글로벌 인재를 양성하고자 하는 포항제철서초의 노력은 최근 역점사업으로 추진하고 있는 ‘1% 차별화 독서 체험 프로그램’을 통해 잘 드러난다. 학년별·학급별 수준에 맞는 필독도서와 권장도서를 학급문고에 확충에 바람직한 독서환경을 제공하는 한편, 매일 아침 30분간 ‘선생님과 함께하는 집중 독서시간’ 운영, 다양한 독서관련 수업과 프로그램이 함께하는 ‘생각을 키우는 도서실’ 운영으로 학생들이 독서를 습관화하고 이를 통해 개인의 지식 기반을 다질 수 있도록 돕고 있다. 이는 ‘생각쟁이 독서토론 동아리’를 통해 자유로운 독서 토론활동으로 이어지고 있으며, 가정에서도 독서교육이 연계될 수 있도록 ‘e-독서교실’ 또한 운영하고 있다. 석선애 교장은 “선생님, 친구, 부모님과 함께하는 독서교육은 아이들의 창의력 함양 뿐 아니라, 자유롭게 의견을 말하고 수용하는 과정을 통해 인성 함양에도 크게 기여하고 있습니다”라고 설명했다. 

포항제철서초는 최근 무엇보다 중시되고 있는 인성교육에도 노력을 게을리 하지 않는다. ‘POSEO플래너’ 활용을 통해 스스로 자신의 행동을 조절할 수 있는 힘을 길러주는 한편, 칭찬통장, 감사나눔엽서쓰기, 사과데이(Apple Day)등을 통해 남을 배려하고 협동하는 인재로 성장할 수 있도록 돕고 있다. 또한 어깨동무 놀이마당을 개장해 아이들이 놀이활동을 통한 협동과 배려, 더불어 사는 삶의 중요성을 느낄 수 있도록 힘쓰고 있다. 

포항세철서초의 또 다른 특징은 경북 유일의 체조부를 보유하고 있으며, 전국체전에서도 우수한 성적을 거두고 있다는 점이다. 다만 석 교장은 아직까지 학교에 체조부가 연습할 수 있는 체육관이 없다는 것이 아쉬움이라며 학생들이 자신의 역량을 십분 발휘하고 꿈을 키워갈 수 있도록 포항시의 관심과 지원이 필요하다는 말을 덧붙였다. 포항의 유일한 사립초등학교로서 포항시가 명품 교육도시로 발돋움하는 데에 기여하고 있는 포항제철서초등학교의 교육이 아이들의 밝은 미래를 위한 더없이 훌륭한 자양분이 되어 주기를 기대한다.

GPS Happy School and Finding Dream Project
Since its founding in 1987, Pohang Jecheol Seo Elementary School has been playing a role in leading the regional education. Under its catch phrase 'Fostering independent, creative, virtuous and healthy man', the school has been practicing its unique goal of realizing 'GPS Happy School' through 'General principles of Education' for building basics, 'Proficient Education' for building creativity and 'Serve the Community' for building cooperative spirit. 

The GPS Project means to find ideal directions of education. It comprises 'G Education' which strengthens body and mind, 'P Education' which boosts creativity and academic performance and 'S Education' which promotes the spirit of team work with fellow students, parents and residents. Principal Sunae Seok of Pohang Jecheol Seo Elementary School said "the education now requires not only good academic record, creativity and personality but also the spirit of team work. In this respect, we are focusing on fostering talented students who are equipped with a clear goal and its implementation capability."

1% Differentiated Reading Experience Program to build one's dream and talent
Pohang Jecheol Seo Elementary School's '1% Differentiated Reading Experience Program' is a result of Seok's effort in fostering global talents. It provides an ideal reading environment through must-read and recommended-read according to its grade and class and teachers are running a program called 'Intensive Reading Time With Teacher' which is a 30 minute reading in the morning and 'Thinker's Library' which habituates students to reading. As a result, students made 'Thinker's Reading & Discussion Club' and encouraged by this, Seok is also running 'e-Library' so that students can continue the habit of reading at home. Seok said "students reading and discussion with teachers, friends and parents can promote more creativity and a better personality of students." 

In terms of personality education, Seok is running 'POSEO Planner' to raise the ability of one's self-control and other programs such as 'Compliment Saving's Account', 'Writing a Thankful Postcard' and 'Apple Day' are encouraging students to build considerate attitude and cooperative spirit. In addition, Seok opened a playground so that students can put what they learn into practice by mingling with other students. 

Meanwhile, Pohang Jecheol Seo Elementary School is the only school in North Gyeongsang Province which has a gymnastic team and the team has achieved excellent record in the National Sports Festival. Seok said that it was regretful that there was no gymnasium in the school yet and Pohang City's interest and support was much needed. As the only private elementary school in Pohang, Seok and the teachers and the staff of the school are exerting their utmost effort in contribution to the educational development of Pohang City.
