다양한 문화에 대한 이해와 경험이라는 바탕으로,
국내 유일무이한 ‘아프리카전문 설계사무소’

(주)AA건축사사무소의 명칭 ‘AA’는 건축을 뜻하는 Architecture와 추상예술이라는 의미의Abstract art의 혼합 명칭으로 만들어졌다. 이는 (주)AA건축사사무소의 유승열 대표가 프랑스 유학시절 졸업작품으로 내걸었던 이름이기도 하다. (주)AA건축사사무소의 명칭 ‘AA’는 건축을 뜻하는 Architecture와 추상예술이라는 의미의Abstract art의 혼합 명칭으로 만들어졌다. 이는 (주)AA건축사사무소의 유승열 대표가 프랑스 유학시절 졸업작품으로 내걸었던 이름이기도 하다. 건축은 건축가가 눈에 보이지 않는 특정한 아이디어와 사고를 작품으로 표현해내는 예술행위라는 것이 곧 기본이라는 그의 소신을 시작으로 ‘아프리카전문 설계사무소’ AA건축사사무소의 이모저모를 2015 코트디부아르 특집을 통해 조명해보았다.
 
위기가 인연이 되었던 첫 시작
2006년도 앙골라 BCA 은행 사옥 신축설계를 맡았던 것이 AA건축사사무소의 첫 해외 프로젝트였다. 그리고 같은 해, 국내의 중견건설사와 계약을 하고 앙골라 수도 루안다에 있는 BCA 은행 신축 실시 설계도서를 납품하는 과정에서 건설사가 부도를 맞게 되는 위기를 겪었다. 유 대표는 홀로 앙골라 출장을 떠나, 앙골라 건축주에게 설계비 지불 요청을 했고 그 해 크리스마스 이브까지 아프리카를 수차례 오가며 수고로움을 감당해야만 했다. 하지만 위기가 곧 인연이 되었던 것일까. 그 당시 만나게 되었던 Augusto Tomas 은행장은 재무부 장관을 역임하게 되었고 그와의 인연으로 유 대표는 문화부, 건설부 등의 장․차관과 기업인을 소개 받아 다양한 프로젝트를 수행할 수 있었다. “사실은 힘들고 원망스러운 면도 있었습니다. 국내에서가 아닌 해외에서 그런 고초를 겪게 된 것에 대하여 혼란스러웠을 뿐더러, 앙골라는 포르투갈어를 쓰는 국가인지라 대화 자체가 불가능했었어요. 업무적으로도 서류 및 도면을 통해 미팅을 할 수 밖에 없었죠. 그럼에도 감사하게 생각하는 것은 그 곳에서 인연을 맺은 Augusto Tomas 은행장이 불어를 했었기에(서두에 이야기했듯, 유 대표는 약 5년 정도 프랑스 유학시절을 거쳤다.) 자연스럽게 업무를 이어나갈 수 있었다는 점입니다.

한편, 당시 앙골라는 내전을 막 끝낸 시점이었고 그러한 상황 속에서 대한민국 민간 기업들에 대하여 호의적인 태도를 갖고 있었기에 더욱 잘 적응할 수 있었습니다. 어쩌면 그 인연으로 주변의 다른 이들도 만나게 될 기회가 생겼고 새로운 프로젝트 정보 또한 얻을 수 있었던 것이죠.” 크게 ㈜AA건축사사무소의 해외프로젝트를 소개하자면 2007년도 아프리카 네이션스컵 경기장 지명현상설계 당선, 다수의 호텔부터 시작하여 2012년 준공한 앙골라 전자정부 데이터센터, 2013년 러시아 시베리아 사하공화국 수도 야쿠츠크에 준공한 LG사하센터, 그리고 현재 앙골라 루방구에 공사 중인 200병상 규모의 어린이 병원과 모자 병원, 현상설계에 참여한 가나 한국 대사관과 2015년 DR 콩고 국립박물관 계획안 등 손꼽기가 힘들 정도이다.

아프리카 전문 설계 사무소를 꿈꾸다.
특히, 2010년과 2012년, 각각 설계를 마친 어린이 병원과 모자 병원은 앙골라에서 두 번째로 큰 도시인 루방구에 조성중인 의료 복합단지 내에 현재 공사 중이다. 루방구가 속한 우일라(Huila) 주정부에서 발주한 용역으로 어린이 병원은 대지면적 68,000㎡, 연면적 11,039㎡, 지상 1층 규모로 200병상이며 모자병원은 대지면적 52,000㎡, 연면적 11,363㎡, 지상 2층 규모로 역시 같은 200병상으로 설계되어있다. 또한, 국내의 대형 건축사무소가 국내 시행사, 건설사 등과 함께 진출하여 주로 공동주택분야 설계를 참여한 데에 반해, ㈜AA건축사사무소는 경기장, 호텔, 오피스, 공장 그리고 병원 등 다양한 분야에 참여를 하며 해외 현지정부, 기업과 직접 접촉을 하고 설계를 수주하여 수행하고 있는 유일한 사무소이다.

새로운 시스템 구축으로
폭넓은 해외전문 설계사무소로 발전하고파
“쉽지 않은 여건 속에서도 제가 계속 일을 할 수 있는 이유는 좋은 교육을 받았기 때문이라고 생각합니다. 그러한 이유로 현재는 소액이지만 매월 일정 금액을 제가 다닌 모교에 기부를 하고 있습니다. 향후 2018년까지 저희 사무소를 안정적으로 운영하여 수익의 10%에 해당하는 장학금을 마련할 계획을 갖고 있습니다.” 유승열 대표의 향후 계획은 세 가지로 압축할 수 있다. 첫째로 새로운 시스템을 구축하여 기존의 발주처, 수주, 설계, 그리고 시공으로 이어지는 설계 사무소의 업무를 새로운 분야 IT 등과 접목하여 I-Phone이나 알리바바와 같이 모바일 플랫폼을 기반으로 한 새로운 시스템을 만드는 것, 두 번째로는 국내 시장 개척, 마지막으로는 새로운 해외 시장을 개척하는 것이다. “지난 10년간 저희 사무소의 주 활동무대는 아프리카, 그 중에서도 앙골라에서 많은 프로젝트를 수행해왔습니다. 2012년 이후, 앙골라가 급격히 경제가 어려워진 탓에 준비한 많은 프로젝트가 중단된 상태에서 DR콩고, 기니 등 아프리카의 다른 국가들로 참여의 기회를 넓히고 아프리카에서 쌓은 경험을 토대로 미얀마, 파푸아 뉴기니 등 새로운 해외 시장을 개척해 나가는 것이 앞으로의 계획입니다.” 향후 3년간의 계획에 맞추어 (주)AA건축사사무소를 아프리카전문 설계사무소에서 아시아·남미 해외 전문 설계사무소로 발전시킬 수 있는 원동력은 다양한 문화에 대한 이해와 경험에 달려 있으리라고 유 대표는 내다보았다. 자신만의 뚜렷한 목표와 소신으로 새로운 도약을 준비하는(주) AA건축사사무소의 희망찬 앞날을 기대한다.

The first step gained from a crisis
Designing the building of BCA Bank of Angola in 2006 was the first overseas project of  AA Architects & Associates. But the firm nearly went bankrupt in the process of design documents of the bank being distributed in Angola. Yoo had to travel to Angola constantly to ask the payment. Fortunately, Yoo met Augusto Tomas, the president of the bank and former Minister of Finance, during this hassling travel, who introduced the people of high social circles to Yoo and thanks to this opportunity, Yoo could carry out various projects. Yoo said "it was really hard and tiring to have problems in a foreign land where they speak different language (Portuguese). I had to have a meeting based on the design paper. But thankfully, I met Augusto Tomas who spoke French which I can also speak. The civil war in Angola was just finished when we started the business there and yet the country showed a friendly manner to Korean companies which made our job easier."

The overseas projects of  AA Architects & Associates include Nation's Cup Stadium Design in Africa 2007, Angola Electronic Government Data Center in 2012, LG Sakha Center in Yakusk, Republic of Sakha in 2013, Children's Hospital (200 wards) and Mother & Son Hospital in Lubango, Angola, The Korean Embassy in Ghana and design for DR Congo National Museum in 2015. 

Dreaming to be Africa specialized architectural design firm
The Children's Hospital and Mother & Son Hospital designed in 2010 and 2012 respectively is being constructed in the medical complex in Lubango, the second largest city in Angola. The former is Huila state government's project and it is a first storey building to be built on a 68,000㎡ land (11,039㎡ total floor space) and the latter is a two storey building to be built on a 52,000㎡ land (11,363㎡ total floor space) with 200 wards. While many large architectural firms in Korea are mainly participating in residential housing projects in overseas in cooperation with construction companies, AA Architects & Associates is a sole firm which participates in various fields such as stadium, hotel, office, factory and hospital through direct contact with local governments and companies. 

Building new system to be a global architectural design firm
Yoo said "the reason I have achieved this much, I think, is because I had a good education and I'm donating part of the profit to my school. I'm planning to donate 10% of our total profit for scholarship by 2018." In the long term perspective, Yoo has three plans to achieve. Firstly, he want to build a new system based on mobile platform such as iPhone and Alibaba by combining their work with IT. Pioneering domestic market and overseas market is the second and the third plans respectively. Yoo said "we have actively participated in many project in Angola for the last 10 years. However, Angola's economic down turn since 2012 gave us a new opportunity to do our projects in various other countries including DR Congo, Guinea, Myanmar and Papua New Guinea." Yoo predicted that success of AA Architects & Associates depends on experience and understanding of various cultures and Yoo is determined to achieve his goal according to its 3 year plan.
