[Cover Story] Artist Cha, Kyung
Revealing utopia through 'freedom into nature'
Holding Korean Catholic Artist Association Exhibition in August
Revealing utopia through 'freedom into nature'

Cha is an artist who pursues 'freedom into nature' through her works in the creating the images of flower and female. The image of flower is expanded and the form of woman is distorted through her natural brush. This looks as if it represents a sense of identity of a woman in a dried modern world and it touches our heart. Each painting of Cha is full of beauty and life and implies a harmonious utopia with the flowers as medium. (Art critic/ Esthetics PhD Mijin Jang)

Cha explained her works as "if I look at a flower in detail, it comes to me as a mysterious and different world. I imagine the world as utopia where I can have a different dream from reality and expressed it on the canvas by taking into consideration its structure and formativeness."
Cha is praised for her various methods to be used to express the subject and the form of her works based on her brush work and point of view. She gave a lot of thoughts to her role as a family member, her career and social activities and reflected each of this sentiment in the canvas. Her brush work today is a result of these thoughts and her dreamlike and distant style has become element of affinity in modern art world.

Serving as a professor at Daegu Future College and establishing the first Fashion Design Department in Korea
Inspiration from her artist family

As a regional artist in Daegu City, Cha opened Gallery L'art famille in 2008. Interestingly, she once served as a professor of Comics & Animation at Daegu Future College. Cha's father ran a textile company and she was the 5th daughter of 6 brothers and sisters. She finished both undergraduate and graduate course in fine art at Keimyung University and worked as an art teacher at a middle school, followed part-time lecturer and full-time lecturer. Then she worked as a professor of Childhood Education and Photography at Daeil College (the predecessor of Deagu Future College), established Korea's first Fashion Design Department, changed Department of Photography to Photographic Image and opened Animation Department which she won Runner Up Prize at 'Art 21' and traveled to France, UK, Switzerland and Italy in 1997 and visited Ghibli Studio in Japan and participated in Animation Festival in China. Thanks to her innovation and effort, Cha received Ministerial Prize of Ministry of Education, Human Resources  & Development in 2007 and Presidential Prize the next year.

Cha's family is an artist family. For this reason, family members influence each other's works. Her husband Chulhee Lee is also an artist who expresses symbolic meaning on the canvas and has a nickname 'Shilain'. Eldest daughter Sujin Lee majored in News Photo, filmed The 16 Taebaek Mountain Snow Festival University Student Snow Sculpture Competition in 2009 and her son majored in sculpture at Art College, worked as gallery administrator affiliated to Catholic University of Daegu and is currently working for Art Creative Power Plant managed by Daegu City's Culture & Art Policy Department. Her youngest one finished a master's course in Music Technology at Sangmyung University and is working as an administrative staff at the same university.

Holding Korean Catholic Artist Association Exhibition
After her retirement, Cha has been actively participating in various solo and group exhibitions with young artists at Yeongcheon Art Studio. Also, as Vice Chairwoman of Daegu Catholic Artist Association, Cha is holding Korean Catholic Artist Association Exhibition in August this year (she held it first in 2011). Cha has Angela as her Christian name and compiled a book containing 100 Catholic artists on the occasion of The 100th Anniversary of Deagu Catholic in 2011. The exhibition actually started in Daegu in 2011 and went round to Gwangju in 2012, Daejeon in 2013, Incheon in 2014 and Daegu again in 2015. The exhibition is to be held at Daegu Culture & Arts Center and 200 works of Catholic artists will be exhibited on the occasion of the 1st anniversary of Pope's visit to Korea.

Meanwhile, Cha is planning to join in Korean Association of University Women to widen her knowledge and hold an exhibition to wish a peaceful unification.
