명리학의 기본에 충실한 ‘새로운 명리학’ 발전시켜
명리학의 정수 모은 서적 내년 출간 준비 중

사람이 태어난 연(年), 월(月), 일(日), 시(時)의 사주에 근거하여 사람의 운명과 길흉화복의 운세를 알아보는 학문인 명리학은 나무와 불, 물, 쇠, 흙 등 우주를 구성하는 다섯 가지의 기운이 맺고 있는 상생과 상극 관계를 통해 운명을 판단한다. 음양과 오행의 배합으로 사람의 부귀와 성공, 직업, 결혼, 길흉 등을 알아보는 명리학은 중국 고대 당나라 이허중으로부터 체계화되기 시작해 1,400년 동안 연구․발전․체계화되고 증명되어서 현재까지도 많은 사람들의 사주학에 큰 영향을 주고 있다. 그러나 한편으로 국내에서는 명리학을 체계적으로 익혀 바른 내용을 알려주는 명리학자가 제대로 활동하기 어려운 실정이다.

15년 전 사업 실패의 경험으로 명리학 공부 시작해
고전 명리학 개념 넘어 새로운 명리학 발전시켜
전라북도 전주시 덕진동에서 7년 째 지성철학관을 운영하고 있는 임화 선생은 솔직하고 정확한 사주 풀이로 전국 각지에서 유명세를 얻고 있다. 그러나 그가 처음 명리학 공부를 시작했던 15년 전까지만 해도 임 선생은 사주 풀이, 명리학과는 거리가 멀었다. 그의 부친은 건설업계에서 성공신화를 이뤘으나 결국 실패를 맞았고, 임 선생은 어린 나이에도 행상을 하여 가계에 보탬이 되었으며 22살이 되던 해에는 벽돌공장을 운영하며 많은 돈을 벌었다. 군 제대 후에는 제지업체에 입사하기도 했다.

오랜 경험으로 사업 자본금을 일찍 마련하고 5개 사업장의 대표 역할을 해나가던 그는 몇 년이 지나자 사업장이 점차 없어지는 불운을 맞게 되었다. 절박한 심정으로 전국의 사주 잘 보는 곳을 수소문해 찾아다니며 사업의 전망을 물었을 때 모든 사람들이 사업은 잘 될 것이라고 말했다. 임 선생은 “잘 차려입고 수행비서와 함께 다니다 보니 눈치를 본 것이 아닌가 싶다. 모두가 긍정적인 이야기를 했지만 결국 1년 뒤에 회사가 또 망했다”고 당시의 이야기를 전했다. 그 때 임 선생은 명리학을 제대로 공부한 학자가 없다는 것을 깨닫고 그 길로 명리학을 공부하기 시작했다. 절박한 심정으로 철학관을 찾아다니는 이들의 마음을 누구보다 잘 알기에 임 선생은 이른바 고서들에서 내려오는 명리학의 개념 안에만 머무르지 않고 새로운 명리학을 끊임없이 발전시켜 나가기 위해 노력하고 있다.

동양철학 전공생들에게도 가르침 이어가
솔직하고 정확한 사주 풀이로 전국적 명성 얻어
7년 동안 지성철학관을 운영해 오며 임 선생이 지켜가고자 하는 원칙은 ‘정확하고 명쾌한 사주풀이’다. 우리나라에는 이미 명리학 서적이 수천 권 이상 나와 있지만 그 가운데 실제로 적용할 수 있는 정확한 풀이를 제시하는 책을 발견하는 것은 쉬운 일이 아니다. 그렇지만 임 선생은 사무실에만 250여 권의 책을 소장하고 되도록 많은 책을 읽으며 명리학의 정수를 알아내기 위해 노력하고 있다. 사주를 통해서는 한 사람에 대해 95% 가까운 사실들을 알아낼 수 있지만 많은 철학관들이 50%도 안 되는 확률로 이야기를 두루뭉술하게 하다 보니 정확성이 떨어지는 것이 사실이다.

임 선생은 오랜 기간에 걸친 학습과 수련을 통해 사주 풀이의 정확성을 높이고 고전적인 학문으로 정체되어 있는 명리학에 새로운 바람을 불어넣고 있다. 덕분에 그의 사무실은 전국 각지에서 찾아오는 손님부터 명리학에 대한 가르침을 받기 위해 철학관을 찾는 동양철학 전공생들까지 항상 쉴 틈 없이 바쁘게 돌아간다. 또한 임화 선생은 솔직하고 명쾌한 사주 서비스로 명망이 높다. 좋지 않은 사주가 나오면 좋지 않은 대로 숨김없이 이야기하는 성격 탓에 그의 풀이를 들은 일부 고객은 실망하기도 하지만 그의 정확한 풀이 때문에 그들도 결국은 다시 지성철학관을 찾는다고 한다.

임 선생은 인터뷰를 진행한 본지 발행인의 사주를 보며 “진(辰)시에 태어난 것이 맞냐”고 몇 번이고 질문했다. 진시에 태어나면 ‘태백산맥의 나무’ 사주로 혼자서는 사업을 할 수 없는 사주이며 사업가로서 꽃을 피우기 위해서는 묘(卯)시에 태어났어야 맞는 것 같다는 것이었다. 이에 의문을 갖고 다시 확인해 보니 지금까지 진시라고 알고 있던 것이 잘못된 것이었다. 정확한 사주풀이를 제공할 뿐 아니라 “미사여구로 손님을 꾀고 싶지 않다”고 이야기하는 임 선생의 성격이 이번에도 사주풀이를 옳은 길로 인도한 것이다.

‘명리학을 재정립하는’ 서적 집필 준비 중
현실과 미래를 직시하는 힘을 주는 것이 사주의 참뜻
임화 선생은 명리학을 계승 발전시키고 후학들에게 조금 더 진보된 명리학을 알려주기 위해 끊임없이 수양과 학문을 병행하며 전문가로서 부끄럽지 않기 위한 노력을 다하고 있다. 이러한 활동의 일환으로 임 선생은 2년 째 명리학 서적 출간을 목표로 집필을 준비하고 있다. 그는 “본래는 올해 책을 내려고 했는데 고민이 많다. 음양오행의 원리를 골자로 해서 고전 명리학을 재정립하는 내용을 담기 위해 노력하고 있다. 우선은 명리학을 많은 사람들에게 알리는 것이 목표이고 이론적인 부분만이 아니라 직접 풀었던 예시도 충실히 실을 예정이다. 출간은 내년 정도를 예상하고 있다”고 이야기했다.

명리학이나 사주에 대한 일반적인 인식은 비과학적인 학문이며 안 좋은 이야기는 하지 않고 사탕발림으로 희망을 부풀린다는 것이었다. 그러나 지성철학관이 추구하는 제일의 철학은 바로 솔직함과 전문성이다. 사주의 특성을 정확히 풀이해 현실과 미래를 직시할 수 있는 힘을 길러주는 것이 임 선생이 추구하는 사주인 것이다. 그의 이러한 발걸음을 통해 대한민국 사주풀이의 새로운 역사가 쓰일 수 있기를 진심으로 기원한다.

From classical concept of the four pillars of destiny to a modern concept
Located in Deokjin-dong, Jeonju-si, North Jeolla Province, Im has been running Jisung Fortuneteller for 7 years and attracting people from the whole nation for his honest and precise fortunetelling. But he was far from fortunetelling 15 years ago. His father made a success in the construction industry but soon failed and Im had to do anything he could such as peddling from his childhood. He then made a lot of money by running a brickyard when he was 22 and worked for a paper mill after discharged from the military service. Despite his talent in running 5 workplaces as CEO, he had to face his business being closed down. In desperation, he started visiting famous fortunetellers nationwide but they all told him that business would take an upturn again. Im looked back those times "I visited the fortunetellers in a formal dress with my personal secretary and this might gave them an impression to say positively to me rather than being honest considering the fact that my business went bankruptcy anyway." He then realized that there was not a single fortuneteller who actually understands the four pillars of destiny and Im launched a studying about the theory by himself. Based on the classical concept of the four pillars of destiny, he developed it into a modern term.

'Honest and precise fortunetelling' has been Im's motto to run Jisung Fortuneteller for the last 7 years. There are thousands of books about fortunetelling but you can rarely find a book which suggests a right interpretation of the theory according to Im. Many fortunetellers provide obscure answers with less than 50% accuracy despite the fact that one can analyse 95% about a person by using the four pillars of destiny. But with 250 books in his office and a long research and training in theory and practice, Im is creating a sensation in the stagnant fortunetelling market through his preciseness. This is the reason that many people including students majoring in oriental philosophy never stop visiting Im to receive a teaching. Im tells a customer about his/her bad luck if the destiny comes out as such and vice versa. His customers might get disappointed at first but soon understand that he told them a truth. 

When looked at the destiny of the editor of Power Korea Im asked whether he surely was born in the time between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. If he was, he was not destined to do a business alone. But it turned out that the editor was not born in the time. Each information is very important to draw a precise analysis otherwise one might give a false fortunetelling according to Im.

Im has been writing a book about the four pillars of destiny for 2 years in the hope of providing a true meaning of the four pillars of destiny. Im said "I planned to publish the book within the year but I decided not to hurry as I want to give more in-depth story about five-elements as well as my experience and numerous helpful cases I gained from my customers." Many people say that fortunetelling is not scientific and it gives a false hope to people. But the difference of Jisung Fortuneteller from other fortunetellers is its philosophy that the meaning of fortunetelling is to provide people a power to face the present and the future based on honesty and accuracy.
