국토를 푸르게 가꾸는 영남지역 유일의 ‘수목진단센터’
“생활권 수목 피해 예방과 진단 및 치료에 힘쓸 터”

‘삶의 질’에 대한 사람들의 관심이 높아지면서 이른바 ‘생활권 수목’이라 불리는 도시 내 수목에 대한 관심 또한 증가하고 있다. 공공기관, 학교, 아파트 등지에 조성되는 생활권 수목은 현대인들에게 휴식의 공간을 제공함과 동시에 신선한 공기와 마음의 안식 또한 되찾아주고 있다. 하지만 점차 향상과는 달리 생활권 수목의 양과 질에 비해 수목관리의 수준은 형편없을 정도로 미흡해 대책마련이 시급히 요구되고 있다.

잘못된 수목관리가 고사 초래해
녹지환경 중요성에 대한 인식의 변화는 수목의 가치에 대한 관심을 고조시키고 있다. 하지만 그에 따른 체계적인 진단 및 치료는 아직까지도 미흡하기만 한 실정이다. 산림청의 조사에 따르면 서울시내 51개 아파트 단지에서 1년간 422회의 농약이 뿌려졌으며, 이 가운데 56% 이상이 고독성 농약이었다. 또한 수목 생태에 적합하지 않은 도시환경의 영향으로 인한 식재지 토양의 척박화 현상과 각종 병해충 발생 등의 요인으로 조경수목의 생육은 큰 장해를 받고 있는 상황이다. 

경남, 부산, 울산 유일의 수목 진단 및 치료 전문기관인 경상대학교 수목진단센터는 2012년 11월 선정된 이래 남부지방 수목병 및 수목해충의 발생현황 조사와 노거수목 건강지표 조사, 수목병해 진단 및 컨설팅, 학생·일반인·공무원을 대상으로 한 수목병해충 교육 등을 수행하고 있다. 특히 지난 2014년부터 중요 조경수목 4수종 및 다방면의 복토피해에 대한 연구에 주력하고 있다. 센터를 이끌고 있는 김종갑 센터장은 “복토는 나무 주변의 토양표면이 높아지는 현상으로 뿌리의 호흡을 방해하고 성장을 저해하여, 결국 수목의 고사를 초래합니다. 저희는 복토피해를 줄이기 위한 방안을 모색함과 동시에 보다 나은 생활권 수목 환경의 조성을 위해 연구에 매진하고 있습니다.”라고 밝혔다.

체계적 수목관리 위한 전문인력 양성에 주력
경상대 수목진단센터는 지난 2013년 창원, 통영, 거제 등에 소재한 학교 및 아파트, 일반주택의 생활권 수목에 대한 피해원인 진단 및 치료를 총 26건 실시했다. 그 외에도 주남저수지 총 125주에 대한 피해조사와 의령군 보호수 36주에 대한 건강상태관리조사를 실시하기도 했다. 지난해에도 40건 이상의 진단을 실시하는 한편, ‘자굴산치유수목권’과의 협약 체결, 천연기념물 제445호인 하동송림을 복토피해 고정조사구로 지정, 지속적으로 모니터링을 하고 있다. 이미 2011년부터 수목클리닉을 운영하며 수목관리의 노하우를 쌓아온 경상대 수목진단센터는 경남, 부산, 울산 및 남부지역 수목에 특징적으로 발생하는 수목 병 및 해충 등을 집중적으로 연구하고 있다.

지난 2013년에는 「참나무시들음병의 특징」에 대한 세미나를, 2014년에는 「생활권 수목진단」세미나를 개최, 다방면에서 활동 중인 연구진을 초빙하여 생활권 수목피해에 대한 정보를 공유하였다. 또한 2014년에 이어 올해에도 경상대학교 지리산학술림에서 관련학과 학생들을 대상으로 주요 발생 병해충 진단방법 및 외과수술 진행과정을 교육하는 등 전문 인력 양성에 힘쓰고 있다. 김 센터장은 “수목의 생육은 기후나 환경 등에 많은 영향을 받습니다. 하지만 일반인들의 수목관리에 대한 지식 부재와 전문성이 부족한 잘못된 처방으로 이미 고사했거나 고사의 위험성이 높은 사례가 많이 발견되고 있습니다. 센터에서는 수목을 전문적으로 관리할 수 있는 나무의사제도의 법제화를 위한 여건을 마련하는 한편, 수목 피해를 예방하고 진단하는 데에 최선의 노력을 기울이겠습니다.”라고 전했다. 우리나라 수목환경의 수준을 향상시킬 이들의 노력에 응원의 박수를 보낸다.

"Wrong tree management of trees cases withering"
Recently, the interest in managing trees and forests are increasing in Korea. But a systematic diagnosis and treatments are not at a good level. According to Korea Forest Service, agricultural pesticides were used for 422 times in 51 apartment blocks in Seoul last year and more than 56% were high toxic pesticides. Trees in cities are also suffering from barren soil and various tree diseases and insect pests. As the first Tree Diagnostic Center in Yeongnam region, Gyeongsang National University Tree Diagnostic Center was launched in November 2012 and is carrying out various researches on tree diseases and insects, tree health index and diagnosis and consulting about trees as well as providing related training to people. They also started a research on 4 kinds of landscaping trees and damages of molding soil since 2014. Director Kim said "damages of molding soil is a phenomenon which the surface of molding soil swells up. It prevents the roots from breathing and growing up and eventually leads the tree to wither. For this, we are working hard on building an ideal environments for trees in cities such as tackling the damages of molding trees."

Fostering specialists in tree management
Gyeongsang National University Tree Diagnostic Center carried out 26 cases of damage diagnosis and treatment of the trees within the day-life zone around schools, apartments and general houses in Changwon, Tongyeong and Geoje in 2013. They also carried out damage surveys for 125 trees around Junam Reservoir and 26 protected trees of Uiryeong County. In addition, they carried out more than 40 diagnosis last year, signed an agreement with Jagulsan Healing Arboretum, designated Hadong Pine Forest (national monument No.445) as a diagnostic area for damages of molding soil which they have been monitoring ever since.

The center has been running Tree Clinic since 2011, held a seminar called 'The Characteristics of Oak Wilt Disease' in 2013, 'Tree Diagnosis in Day-life Zone' in 2014 and invited researchers from various fields to share information about tree damages. Also, the center trained students majoring in the field on diagnostic methods of tree diseases and the process of surgical operation at Gyeongsang National University's Jirisan Haksulim. Kim said "trees are much affected by changes of climate and environment. But many trees are dying due to lack of professional knowledge and specialists. For this, we are preparing to legalize Tree Doctor System and we will keep doing our best to promote healthy conditions of our trees."
