인체에 가까운 성분으로 탁월한 피부재생 효과 보여

최근 한 유명 뷰티프로그램에 소개된 이후, ‘마유’ 크림의 인기가 식을 줄을 모른다. 말의 지방조직에서 추출한 지방성분인 마유는 이미 오래전부터 일본, 중국 등지에서 큰 인기를 끌어왔다. 전문가에 따르면 세계 마유 시장은 이미 1조원 대에 이르며, 그 밖의 고기나 태반, 가죽, 뼈 등의 부산물 산업을 통틀면 그 규모는 수조 원대에 달할 것으로 전망되고 있다.
식용도 가능한 100% 마유 크림 개발
제주시 애월읍 유수암리에 있는 농업회사법인 제주마산업㈜는 2008년 농림수산식품부의 지원을 받아 제주테크노파크 내 제주마클러스터 사업단으로 출발, 이듬해 2월 독립 법인으로 출발했다. 이후 ‘제라한’이라는 브랜드를 통해 2010년 7월부터 말기름을 활용해 만든 마유 비누를 소비자들에게 소개해왔다. 관공서나 특산품 코너 등을 통해 판매되기 시작한 마유 비누는 특히 아토피 환자들에게 효과가 있는 것으로 알려지며 좋은 반응을 얻었다. 2010년 제주마산업의 대표로 취임한 뒤 ‘제라한’의 제품 개발과 판매를 주도해 온 정길찬 대표는 당시 ‘마유’ 시장의 성장가능성을 확신하고 과감한 투자를 지속해왔다. 정 대표는 “일본은 이미 50년 이상의 역사를 통해 마유 산업이 성숙단계를 거쳐 확연한 성과를 보이고 있었습니다. 그때까지의 저희 연구로는 경쟁이 어렵다고 판단하고 고유 기술을 가진 기술자를 영입하는 한편, 차별화 된 제품개발에 주력해왔습니다”라고 설명했다.
천혜의 자연환경과 함께 최고의 말(馬) 산지로 꼽히는 제주의 강점에 주목한 정 대표는 식용이 가능할 정도로 인체에 무해한 ‘100% 마유’ 제품 개발에 주력해왔다. 마유의 지방산은 인간의 지방산과 95% 일치해 놀라운 흡수력을 자랑한다. 또한 세라마이드, 팔미톨레산과 같은 불포화지방산이 여타 지방산보다 2~3배 많이 함유되어 있어 보습, 피부보호, 세포재생촉진, 자외선차단, 항균 효과 등이 탁월하다. 정 대표는 “마유는 특히 피부재생 능력이 탁월해 화상은 물론 아토피, 탈모 등 피부와 관련된 모든 부분에 쓰이고 있습니다. 현재 출시를 앞두고 있는 100% 마유 정제 화장품은 국내 유일이고, 세계적으로도 손에 꼽히는 최고의 기술력이라 자부합니다”라고 밝혔다.
대한민국 말 산업의 대표주자
제주마산업은 지난 2012년 조직재생용 의료용구 제조업체인 ㈜나이벡과 제품공급 계약을 맺었으며, 2013년에는 국내 최고의 화상치료 전문병원인 베스티안병원과 계약을 체결하고 관련 제품을 공급해오고 있다. 아직까지 국내 마유 시장이 활성화되지 않았던 시기, 일찌감치 성장 가능성을 판단하고 마유 효능 검증과 연구개발에 매진해온 것이다. 정 대표는 “최근 내수시장이 성장하고 있지만 아직 미미한 수준입니다. 때문에 수출로 활로를 열어야 하는 만큼 세계 시장과 경쟁할 수 있는 제품 개발은 필수적이었습니다. 관련 인증 획득이 확실시되는 올 8월 이후부터는 마유크림의 본고장이라 할 수 있는 일본에도 역수출을 계획 중이며, 중국에서는 이미 뜨거운 관심 속에 상당한 시장을 확보하고 있는 상황입니다”라고 설명했다. 그는 이에 덧붙여 천연원료인 탓에 제조공정에서 세심한 관리가 요구되는 만큼 제품의 가치를 훼손시키지 않기 위해 더욱 각별한 주의를 기울이고 있다고 언급했다.
말은 고기나 육가공품 외에도 다양한 방식으로 활용되며 친환경제품으로서의 높은 부가가치를 창출하고 있다. 오랜 연구를 통한 뛰어난 기술력을 바탕으로 아시아를 넘어 세계를 향해 나아갈 ‘제라한’과 제주마산업㈜의 힘찬 도약을 기대해 보자.

Horse Oil, the eco-friendly natural cream that regenerates skin

Introducing the edible 100% horse oil cream
Located in Yusuam-ri, Aewol-eup, Jeju City, Agriculture Company Jeju Horse Industry Corporation was founded as a Jeju Horse Cluster Project Group in Jeju Techno Park in 2008 supported by Ministry of Agriculture, Food & Rural Affairs and became an independent corporate body in February 2009. Then they launched a brand called 'Zerahan' and started to make and release Horse Oil Soap from July 2010. It was sold at public offices and specialty corners in a shop and gradually gained popularity for its effectiveness for curing atopy. As president of Agriculture Company Jeju Horse Industry Corporation, Jung commanded of developing and selling Zerahan products from 2010 and has been consistently investing in the horse oil as he saw a market potential. Jung said "Japan has a 50 year history of horse oil. I thought it was impossible to catch up their know how and technology, so I rather decided to invite professionals in the field to develop our own unique products."
Jung used Jeju's advantage as an ideal place for horse breeding and focused on developing edible 100% horse oil. The fatty acid of horse oil matches with 95% of human fatty oil which shows an amazing absorbing power. It contains 2 or 3 times more unsaturated fatty acid such as ceramide and Palmitoleic acid which is good for moisturizing, skin protection, catalyst for cell regeneration, sunblock and anti-bacterial effect. Jung said "horse oil is excellent at skin regeneration, atopy and hair loss. Our 100% horse oil cosmetics are the first product made of horse oil in Korea and is second to none in the global market."
Leading the domestic horse industry
Agriculture Company Jeju Horse Industry Corporation signed an agreement with Nibec, which is a tissue regeneration medical equipment production firm, in 2012 and with Bestian Medical Center, which is a burn specialized hospital, in 2013 to supply their products. Jung said "though the demand for horse oil related products in the domestic market is increasing, it is not a great level yet. For this reason, we had to develop products that had global competitiveness in order to pioneering the overseas market. We are currently expecting to obtain a patent by August and when this is done, which we are sure to obtain it, we will reexport to Japan, the home of horse oil as well as China which we already secured a considerable size of market", adding that "as horse oil is natural source, we are paying utmost attention to the whole manufacturing process so that we can provide the only top quality products."
Horses are used for meat and can be made into other various forms of products. For this reason, people are creating high value added products with horses and Agriculture Company Jeju Horse Industry Corporation and Zerahan will take a great role to develop and promote Korean horse oil products.
