정보의 교류와 공유가 활발해진 요즘, 우리는 건강과 관련된 다양한 정보들을 흔히 접할 수 있게 되었다. 이를테면 당뇨병 치료에 좋은 음식은 무엇인지, 다이어트에 효과가 좋은 음식은 무엇인지 등의 이야기들과 함께 ‘슈퍼푸드’나 ‘힐링푸드’와 같은 명칭들이 인터넷 세상을 떠돌아다니고 있다. 하지만 이런 경로를 통해 전해지는 것들이 모두 ‘정확한 정보’라고 확신할 수 있을까. 이번호 파워코리아에서는 우리가 잘못 알고 있던 ‘백년초의 진실’에 대한 이야기를 들어봤다.

100년을 사는 신비의 식물
줄기 모양이 손바닥처럼 넓적한 형상을 하고 있어서 ‘손바닥 선인장’이라고도 불리는 백년초는 제주에서 자생하는 대표적인 약용식물이다. 100가지 병을 고치고, 먹으면 100년을 산다고 해 이름 붙은 선인장인 백년초는 식이섬유와 칼슘, 철분 등을 다량함유하고 있을 뿐만 아니라 혈당 개선 등의 다양한 효과를 지녀 최근 건강기능식품으로 각광받고 있으며, 제주에서는 지방 특산물로의 육성을 위해 지원의 폭을 넓히고 있기도 하다. 

제주도 서귀포시 외돌개 입구에 위치한 백년초박물관은 다양한 효능을 가진 백년초에 대한 정보뿐만 아니라 최소 100년에서 300년 자란 백년초 1천여 그루를 직접 감상하고, 백년초 열매를 맛볼 수 있는 제주의 대표적인 ‘백년초 관광명소’이다. 특히 국내 유일의 300년 이상 자란 백년초는 마치 나무와도 같은 모습으로 수 미터 이상 자라 그 위용을 뽐내고 있다. 그밖에도 2,000여 평 규모의 대지에는 백년초 외에도 세계적으로도 희귀한 600여 종의 선인장들이 자라고 있으며, 천연석 분재와 석부작, 감귤 체험장, 그리고 국내 유일의 아마란스 오솔길 등이 조성되어 있어 감귤이나 아마란스 열매를 직접 따먹는 체험을 즐길 수도 있다. 백년초는 칼슘의 대명사인 멸치보다 칼슘 함유량이 8배 이상 많으며, 변비예방과 장운동 활성화에 도움이 되는 식이섬유 함유율이 30%로 곡류나 채소, 과실류에 비해 탁월하게 높은 것으로 알려졌다. 비타민C도 알로에의 5배에 이르며, 노화억제와 항암 등에 효과가 있는 페놀성 물질과 플라보노이드도 5% 정도 함유돼 율무, 표고버섯, 칡뿌리, 생강, 호두 등에 비해 훨씬 높은 것으로 분석됐다. 

한편, 백년초박물관의 김제국 대표는 “이미 유명한 의학서인 본초강목과 동의보감 등에서 백년초가 그 효능을 통해 우수성을 인정받아 왔지만, 최근에 알려져 있듯 국가문화재 천연기념물 제429호, 제주도 지방기념물 제35호로 지정되어 보호되고 있다는 것은 사실이 아니다. 일부에서 상업적인 용도로 이것이 정설인 양 퍼뜨리고 있어 상당히 안타까운 심정”이라고 말했다.

진짜 백년초의 역사와 가치를 되살리다
백년초의 효능이 하나둘 밝혀지면서 사람들의 백년초에 대한 관심이 급증하고 있다. 이에 따라 백년초를 활용한 조리법이나 가공제품 등이 등장하며 사람들의 호기심을 해소시키고 있기도 하다. 하지만 시중에 ‘백년초’라는 이름으로 판매되고 있는 대부분의 상품들의 사실은 백년초가 아니라는 사실을 아는 이는 그리 많지 않다.

‘부채선인장’의 한 종인 백년초는 특성상 환경변화에 매우 강하며, 농약을 뿌리거나 별다른 비료를 줄 필요도 없다. 강한 생명력으로 100년 이상 자라며, 사람 키보다 높이 자라기도 한다. 본초강목에 따르면 백년초는 ‘기의 흐름과 혈액순환을 좋게 하고 독을 풀어주며, 심장과 위통 개선, 기관지 천식 등에 이로운 약초’라고 기록되어 있다. 하지만 이렇게 효능이 알려진 백년초의 이름을 빌려 판매되고 있는 제품들은 유사한 품종의 일반 ‘다육이선인장’일 뿐 백년초가 아니다. 우선 백년초는 크게 자라면 수 미터까지도 자라지만 일반 다육이선인장은 허리춤까지밖에 자라지 않는다. 또한 손바닥을 닮은 줄기의 크기도 백년초의 경우가 몇 배나 더 크다. 

김 대표는 “다육이선인장은 열매에 핀 꽃몽우리가 초록색인 반면, 백년초는 붉은색을 띕니다. 또한 다육이선인장은 일주일에서 열흘이면 꽃이 떨어지는데, 백년초는 6개월까지도 그대로 피어있습니다. 열매의 경우 다육이선인장은 따지 않으면 곧 썩는데 반해, 백년초 열매는 따지 않아도 그 열매에서 꽃이 피고, 줄기가 자라며 다시 열매를 맺어 성장이 이어집니다”라고 설명했다. 또한 바람이 불어서 떨어진 열매는 곧 모종이 되어, 땅에 심었을 때 2.5~3m까지 자란다고 한다. 또 한 가지, 다육이선인장은 1년에 마디가 하나씩 자라지만, 백년초는 3~5개의 마디가 나오는 것으로 구분할 수 있다고 한다.

가장 중요한 차이점은 바로 ‘효능’이다. 김 대표는 “현재 사람들이 알고 있는, 그리고 제주도에서 백년초라고 홍보하며 육성하고 있는 식물은 모두 ‘다육이선인장’의 한 품종일 뿐입니다. 백년초의 효능이라며 발표되는 연구결과나 정보들은 실제 백년초의 효능은 맞지만, 전혀 다른 제품이 이를 무단으로 가져다가 쓰고 있는 상황인거죠. 진짜 백년초의 경우 수확량이 그렇게 많지 않다는 점 때문에 이렇게 악용되고 있는 것 같습니다. 전 세계에서 백년초는 이곳 밖에 없다”라고 역설했다.

6대째 백년초를 관리·보존해 온 집안에서 자라나 지난 36년을 백년초 보존과 효능 연구에 매진한 김 대표는 전국 최대의 ‘진짜 백년초’ 군락지를 보유하고 4년 전 이를 알리기 위한 박물관을 오픈했다. 또한 그는 “백년초의 효능은 열매가 아닌 줄기와 몸통에 집중되어 있습니다”라고 덧붙이며 이를 가공한 원액의 경우 점성이 강해 기울여도 쏟아지지 않고 다시 올라온다는 사실을 증명해 보이기도 했다. 이렇듯 고독한 싸움을 계속해온 김 대표는 더 많은 이들이 올바른 정보를 알게 되었으면 바람으로 이미 다수의 특허를 출원하기도 했다.   

제주의 관광특산품으로 키워나갈 것
우리가 잘못 알고 있던 백년초에 대한 진실을 바로잡고, 보다 많은 이들에게 정확한 정보를 전달하기 위해 김제국 대표는 백년초박물관을 설립하고 홍보에 주력하고 있다. 이미 최근 몇 년간 KBS, MBC, SBS 등의 방송국에서 백년초박물관을 방문해 이 같은 정보를 소개하는 프로그램을 제작했으며, 신문과 잡지 등의 채널을 통해 올바른 상식을 전파하는 데에도 힘쓰고 있는 상황이다. 그가 이처럼 백년초에 애정을 쏟는 이유는 36년간 지켜온 ‘바른먹거리’에 대한 철학과 소신 때문이다. 분명한 효능을 바탕으로 많은 이들의 건강에 도움을 줄 수 있는 백년초가 일부의 그릇된 행동으로 인해 오해받고, 멀어지기를 바라지 않기 때문이다. 

김 대표는 백년초박물관을 방문한 이들에게 무료로 백년초즙을 넣은 차 시음 기회를 제공하는 한편, 100년 이상 자란 백년초의 줄기와 몸통으로 만든 ‘몸통 원액’과 ‘분말’을 현장판매하고 있다. 그는 “백년초가 제대로 된 효능을 가지려면 100년 이상 자라야 합니다. 아마 그 어떤 기업도 이런 식물을 이용해 제품을 공급하기는 어려울 겁니다. 앞으로도 백년초가 제주의 관광특산품이 될 수 있도록 키워나갈 생각입니다”라고 밝혔다. 수많은 세월을 견디며 살아가는 신비의 식물 백년초. 불로장생의 명약으로 불렸던 백년초가 새로운 제주의 관광명품으로 자리잡게 되기를 기대한다.

Mysterious plant that lives for 100 years
Because of its palm-like shape, the native Jeju cactus is also called ‘'Palm Cactus’' as well as ‘'Baek-nyeon-cho (100 year plant)’' in Korean language. It can also mean that you can live for 100 years if you eat this. Jeju Cactus is rich in fiber, calcium and iron and it improves blood sugar in our body. As it is getting more popular for a healthy food, Jeju is strengthening the support to promote the related market.

Located in Oedolgae, Seogwipo City, Jeju, Jeju Cactus Museum has 1,000 cactus aged between 100 years to 300 years and visitors can appreciate their fruits and related information in museum. One might get surprised by the several meter tall of 300 year Jeju Cactuses in the museum. Also, its 6,611 square meter size of the museum has 600 kinds of rare cactuses as well as natural potted plants, plant on a stone, tangerine experience site and amaranth pathway where you can enjoy the fruit of amaranth. Jeju Cactus has 8 times more calcium than anchovy and 30% more dietary fiber than grains, vegetables and fruits and is excellent for constipation and bowel movement. There is 5 times more vitamin C in the cactus and it also contains 5% of phenol substance and flavonoid which are effective for anti-aging and cancer.

Kim said “"the medical effect of Jeju Cactus was already written in ancient medical books but it’'s not true that its appointed as a Natural Monument No.429 and Jeju Local Monument No.35. This is because some people want to use it for commercial purpose.” 

Reviving the true history and value of Jeju Cactus
Jeju Cactus is getting popular as its medicinal effect is being found day by day. For this reason, you can see numerous Jeju Cactus processed products in the market. But not many people know the fact that most Jeju Cactus related products in the market are not made of real Jeju Cactus but succulent plant cactus. Jeju Cactus is strong at change of environment and you do not need to give fertilizer.

It lives more than 100 years and some of them grows several meter high. According to ancient medical books, it helps a flow of energy and blood circulation and removes the toxins and it is also good for stomach ache and asthma. Jeju Cactus has a bigger stem than succulent plant cactus and the latter grow up to only a person’'s waist.

Kim said “the bud on the fruit of succulent plant cactus is green but the real Jeju Cactus is red. The flower of the former one drops in 10 days but the latter lasts up to 6 months. The fruit of the former get rotten if not picked up but the latter’'s runs the cycle automatically. The joint of the former has only one a year but the latter’'s is 3 to 5 and the fruit dropped on the soil become a seed to grow up to 2.5 to 3 meters. But the biggest difference between them is its medicinal effect. Kim said “I can tell you that most cactus related products in the market are not real Jeju Cactus. The effect they are commercializing is actually correct but they put different things into the packages because the real Jeju Cactus cannot be mass produced. And I assure you that Jeju Cactus (Baeknyeon-cho) only grows here in Jeju in the whole world.”

Kim’s family has managed and preserved Jeju Cactus for 6 generations and Kim has devoted to studying on its effect for 36 years. He opened a museum four years ago to let people know about the true habitat of Jeju Cactus. The effect of Jeju Cactus is in the body and the stem but not in the fruit. Its crude liquid also has a strong stickiness according to Kim. In the meantime, Kim obtained numerous patents to keep and pass down authentic Jeju Cactus.

Promoting Jeju Cactus as a local specialty
Kim opened Jeju Cactus Museum to provide proper information and to promote the products. Major broadcasting companies like KBS, MBC and SBS introduced the museum and numerous newspapers and magazines have also reported about the effect of real Jeju Cactus. Kim’s love of Jeju Cactus actually comes from his philosophy on healthy food because even the cure-all medicine can be useless if it is used in a wrong way.

You can taste Jeju Cactus juice tea for free at the museum and buy ‘crude liquid of the body’' and ‘'powder’. Kim added “"The Jeju Cactus need to be at least 100 years old to have medicinal effect. This makes other companies impossible to produce and supply the product. But I have know how and experience and I’'m determined to promote the Jeju Cactus to be a local specialty of Jeju.”
