애국선열들의 숭고한 정신을 계승하다 / 광복회경남북부연합지회 임부륙 전 지회장
“국가와 지역사회의 일원으로서 역할과 책임을 다할 것”

역사학자 콜링우드는 ‘역사는 죽은 과거가 아니라, 현재 속에 살아 있는 과거다’라고 말했다. 역사는 그 민족의 정체성이며, 민족의 정신이다. 우리의 선조들이 살아온 역사는 현대사회를 살아가고 있는 우리들의 생활과 사고방식을 결정짓는다. 이것이 역사를 바로 알고 그 의미를 끊임없이 되새겨야 하는 이유다.

국가를 위한 고귀한 희생 아래
우리 민족에게는 뼈아픈 역사가 있다. 일본제국주의에 의해 식민통치를 당한 일제강점기 35년과 1950년 6월 25일부터 3년간 이어진 한국전쟁이다. 광복회 경남북부연합지회 임부륙 전 지회장은 두 번의 역사 속에서 증조부 조부 부친과 종형을 포함, 여섯 분의 어른을 잃은 3대에 걸친 애국지사 가문의 후손이다. 

그의 선친인 유당 임유동 선생은 일제강점기 시절 언론창달에 힘쓰며 항일투쟁을 이어간 독립 운동가이다. 1924년 조선학생총련합회의 발기인 중 1인으로 참가한 임유동 선생은 1928년에는 북경사범대학 재학 중 가입임무를 띄고 중국에 파견 북경한인청년단선전원으로 입국, 활동을 펼치다가 체포되어 2년간 옥고를 치르기도 했다. 이후 1929년 중외일보 편집 감독겸상무로, 1930년에는 상무취체역으로 활동하며 우리나라 최초의 조석간 8면을 발행해 국민을 일깨우기 위한 구국활동에 앞장섰으며 임시정부 및 UN군 환영 준비위원, 민주주의 독립 전선 상무위원, 순국 의·열사 사적 방사위원을 역임했다. 현 GS그룹 창업주 허만정 선생과 처남남매 지간이기도 하다. 당시 촉망받는 인물이었으나 6.25 전란 때 파르티잔의 총격에 의해 파란만장한 생을 마감했다. 선생 내외분께선 대전 국립현충원 애국지사묘역에 안장 되었고 지난 1999년 공로를 인정받아 ‘건국훈장 애국장’을 추서 받았다.

종형인 임이종 중령은 국군 6사단 19연대 대대장으로 한국전쟁에 참전해 1.4후퇴의 격전장에서 국가를 위해 장렬히 산화한 인물로 금성화랑무공훈장을 수여받았다. 

역사를 바로잡기 위한 헌신
임부륙 지회장은 연이은 비극 속에서도 춥고 배고픈 어린 시절을 꿋꿋이 견디며 성장한 뒤 선대의 뜻을 이어받아 국가와 민족을 위한 일에 헌신하고 있다. 대학 시절에는 ROTC 초급장교로 임관, 최전방에서 국토방위에 전념했으며, 전역 후에는 현대건설에 입사 국토재건사업의 일익을 담당했다. 퇴사 후에는 고향인 거창으로 돌아와 지방언론의 활성화와 지역 사회에 올바른 정보를 알리는 데에 매진하고 있다. 

그밖에도 그는 12년간의 노력 끝에 왜곡된 거창군 군사를 바로잡기 위해 사재를 들여 ‘거창군사 보정판’을 내고, 선대의 유물과 젊은 시절부터 수집한 자료 1,000여 점을 거창박물관에 기증하기도 했다. 또한 민족문제 연구소회원으로서 ‘근현대생활사자료관 건립’을 추진하며 보유하고 있던 독립운동자료를 비롯한 박물 1,000여점을 기증했다. 

임 지회장은 “무엇보다 중요한 것은 역사가 바로 서는 것이고, 선대에 부끄럽지 않은 사회를 건설하는 것입니다”라고 강조했다. 이를 위해 그는 광복회 경남북부연합지회 주관으로 매년 광복절을 기념하며 ‘어린이 태극기 그리기 대회’를 개최하였으며, 11월 17일에는 순국선열의 날 추모 음악회도 주관하고 있다. 이에 지난 2011년에는 모범 국가보훈대상자로서 국가보훈처저장 표창 과 국무총리 상을 을 받기도 했다. 또한, 거창군 "Happy Tree Chior 다문화 가족 합창단" 김은애 지휘자의 재능기부 나눔 실천에 힘입어 단장으로써 고맙다는 인사와 다문화주의 한계와 그 환경극복에 적극노력하고 있다.

역사를 바로 세우고, 민족의 정신을 알리기 위해 헌신하고 있는 그의 열정에 응원의 박수를 보낸다.

Korea has a painful history. Korea was colonized by Japan for 35 years and experienced the Korean War for 3 years soon after the independence. The Former Branch Chief of Restoration Society in Northern Gyeongsang Im Bu-ryok is a descendant of a patriotic family. Six of his ancestors including his grand-grand father, grand father and father all died through this painful history. His deceased father Im Yu-dong was an independence activist who tried hard to establish Korean media. He became an initiator of Joseon Student's Alliance in 1924, studied at Beijing College of Education in 1928, active as a publicity man of Beijing Korean Youth Group, arrested and spent 2 years in prison. He served as Editing Director of the Jungoe Ilbo in 1929, as the Director of the same newspaper in 1930, published Korea's first 8 page morning & evening newspaper to lead the patriotic activities.

He also served as a member of the Arrangement Committee for Provisional Government & UN Forces, a member of Standing Committee for Democratic Independent Front and a member of Research Committee for Patriotic Relics. He was also a relative (brother in law) of the founder of GS Group Huh, Man-jeong. He was a promising figure but died by a shot from partisan during the Korean War. He and his wife were buried in Daejeon National Cemetery and was conferred an Order of Merit for National Foundation in 1999. 

Devoting to correcting distortions of history
Im spent hard times in his childhood but he committed his life to national interest in order to succeed his ancestors' patriotic feats. He served as a commissioned officer of ROTC in the front line when in university and worked for Hyundai Engineering & Construction after discharged from military service. When he left company, he went back to his home town Geochang and is devoting himself to activating regional media.

Im found that the military history of Geochng County was wrong and used his own money to correct distortions of the history by publishing 'Revision of Geochang Military History' after 12 years of his effort and donated 1,000 relics of his ancestors' and his collection to the Museum of Geochang. As a member of Institute for Research in Collaborationist Activities, he initiated the establishment of 'Modern Life Reference Center' and donated his 1,000 collections including references of independence movement. Im said "the most important thing is to correct our history and to build society our ancestors would be pride of." For this, he holds 'Children National Flag Drawing Competition' every year in commemoration of National Liberation Day and runs a concert to commemorate Patriotic Martyrs Day on 17 November. As a beneficiary of patriots & veterans, Im received a citation from the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs and the Prime Minster Award in 2011. Also, he thanked the conductor Kim Eun-hae of Geochang Happy Tree Multi-cultural Family Choir for her talent donation and they together are exerting their effort to promote different cultures in Korea.
