교육은 문화콘텐츠 산업의 경쟁력을 높이는 최고의 투자

현재 이 시대의 가장 큰 화두는 창조와 융합이다. 정보화 시대 국경을 초월한 다양한 자료들을 활용하고, 어떻게 융합을 하는지에 따라 경쟁력이 달라진다. 이는 비단 IT분야 뿐 아니라 문화예술 산업에서도 그 흐름을 거스를 수 없다. 우리나라 문화예술의 현주소와 미래를 알아보기 위해 새로운 시대에 걸맞은 문화예술 인재를 육성하고 있는 세종대학교 융합예술대학원 김태훈 원장을 만나 이야기를 나누었다.

문화예술의 핵심은 사람
대학졸업 후 광고회사에 취업한 김 원장은 연극 공연과 광고 회사일을 병행하였지만 부족한 공부에 대한 갈증을 해결하기 위해 러시아로 유학을 떠났다. 김 원장이 러시아를 선택한 이유는 연기의 아버지라 불리는 스타니슬랍스키 때문이다. 극 중 인물과 동일시를 통한 극사실주의적 연기를 메소드 연기(method acting)라고 칭하는데 러시아의 대배우이자 연출가인 스타니슬랍스키가 메소드 연기의 창시자이다. 러시아에서 김 원장은 연기교육을 전공하였고 연기 교육을 어떻게 해야 하는지 자신만의 교육 철학을 갖고 1998년 귀국, 이듬해인 1999년 후학을 양성하기 위해 대학교에 강의를 나갔다. 그리고 2002년에 세종대학교에 전임교수로 부임했다.

김 원장 “문화예술의 경쟁력을 높이기 위해 가장 중요한 것은 교육이다.” 라며 자신의 신념을 말한다. 어느 분야나 모두 마찬가지지만 특히 문화예술은 사람이 창조하고 이끌어가는 분야기 때문이다. 그리고 과거엔 자신의 분야만을 열심히 공부했지만 21세기인 지금은 연기, 미술, 음악 등 다양한 장르를 교육, 그것들을 융합하여 제3의 콘텐츠를 창조하는 것이 예술적으로나 상업적으로 발전할 수 있다고 말한다. 또한, 오랜 경력의 중견 예술인도 교육을 통해 본인 스스로 새로운 발돋움을 할 수 있으며 다양한 장르간 교류를 통해 새로운 시각이 생겨 개인적인 발전을 이룰 수 있다고 한다.

식지 않는 열정으로 동시대인들과 소통
김 원장은 강의하는 것만으로도 많은 시간을 할애하면서 융합예술대학원장으로서 행정업무까지 겹쳐 눈코 뜰 새 없는 생활을 하고 있다. 하지만 배우로서 연기에 대한 열정은 식을 줄 모른다. 1년에 서너 편의 작품 활동을 한다. 작년에 제15회 김동훈 연극상, 지난 3월에는 제34회 영희연극상을 수상하는 등 교수로서 그리고 연기자로서 두 마리 토끼를 모두 잡았다.

“제가 현장 활동을 하는 이유는 대단한 스타나 연예인이 되고 싶어서가 아닙니다. 예술가로서 끊임없이 살아있음을 느끼고 동시대에 사는 사람들과 소통하기 위해서, 그리고 현장감을 학생들에게 전달하기 위해서입니다. 그리고 저의 현장 활동을 이해해주고 지원해주시는 학생들과 세종대학교 총장님께 감사를 드립니다.”

마지막으로 우리 사회에서 문화예술의 역할을 묻는 기자에게 김 원장은 “성공제일주의, 경제제일주의를 위해 앞만 보고 달려온 우리 사회가 많은 성취를 이루었지만, 인간성의 실종, 휴머니티의 부재 같은 부작용이 있습니다. 문화예술을 통해서 그런 부작용을 해소하고 사람들의 상처를 치유할 수 있습니다. 그리고 우리 학생들이 그 역할을 다할 수 있기를 기대하고 있습니다.”라고 말한다. 학생들과 자신의 발전을 위해 멈추지 않는 열정을 불태우는 김 원장을 통해 우리나라 문화예술의 미래가 밝음을 확신한다.

"People are the center of culture and art"
Kim started to work for an ad agency and was involved in theatrical performance after graduation. But he crossed to Russia to water his thirst for academic achievement soon after. Kim chose Russia as he admires Constantin Stanislavski, the founder and father of method acting, very much. Method acting identify the actor with a character in the play to create literary realism. He studied performance education there and came back to Korea with his own educational philosophy in 1998 and started to give lecture at various universities from the following year. He then was offered a place at Sejong University in 2002 as a full-time professor. 

Kim says "Education is the best investment in increasing the competitiveness of cultural contents industry." This is because culture and art are the fields where 'creation from people' is intensively involved. But, unlike one-way of education in the past, Kim combined acting, fine arts and music together to create 'The 3rd Contents' in the pursuit of current market demands in both artistic and commercial success. With this new approach, Kim said, even a veteran artist can further his/her capability. 

Communication with the contemporaries
Kim is a very busy person as he has to play his two roles at the same time: a professor and Dean of Graduate School of Fusion Arts. But what makes him more busy is that he gets involved in two or three plays a year as an actor. This is well proved by winning 'The 15th Kim Dong-hoon Theatre Awards' last year and 'The 34th Younghee Theatre Awards' last March. 

Kim says "I don't act to be a star. I want to live my life and communicate with the contemporaries. And I want to thank those all who support me including students and the chancellor of the university."

When asked about the role of culture and art in the Korean society, Kim said "we have achieved a miraculous economic success but the loss of humanity. And we can achieve it through culture and art and our students will be the driving force for it."
