Leading Buddhist paintings through harmony between tradition and modernity
Two generations' love of Buddhist paintings that blossom from fingertips
Director Jeong Mu-hoon of Sejong National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage

A 30 years of single path that blossomed Buddhist paintings
Buddhist art in a way is Korean art itself. Most national treasures are consisted of Buddhist art. The problem is that reserving and succeeding of the art is being ignored in this day and age. In this atmosphere, the patience and effort of an artist who has been keeping and succeeding the art is really meaningful. The Director Jeong Mu-hoon of Sejong National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage is the very person. He has painted Buddhist paintings for many years and is a certified technician (No.2306) of restoring cultural assets in the sector of 'Dancheong' (traditional multicolored paintwork on wooden buildings).

He started to work in the field since 1985. He was heavily influenced from his father Jeong Dong-geun who worked in the field for more than 50 years. Jeong says "my father was a pupil of a monk Shin Bum-ho and learned Dancheong from another monk Shin Bong-gu and walked the single path for more than 50 years ever since. I then followed the same path like my father but the path was not that easy." His father had a pacific personality in daily life but was very strick when it comes to paintings. Under his father's deep understanding and skills about the art, Jeong has built his own art world: the harmony between tradition and modernity.

Jeong says "I actually doubted about using primary color at first as I fancied using colors differently. But I realized why showy colors are used in the Buddhist paintings as time went by. Five colors contain the meanings of the five points of the compass and the law of yin and yang. Therefore, I follow the traditional method with a slight reduction in chroma."

"Substance and basics are most important"
Buddhist paintings are paintings drawn to spread its philosophy. Therefore, they contain its philosophy, theory and doctrine as well as esthetic values. This is the reason that Buddhist artists continuously study about Buddhist Scriptures. Jeong says "one cannot paint a Buddhist painting at one's will. It must be done based on the Buddhist Scriptures and therefore one must understand about the scriptures.

Otherwise, a painter will ended up with a different painting." Jeong understood this principle when he was working on the alter portrait of Buddha at Hyangjeok Temple in Bonghwa County as he had to follow the advice from the chief monk of the temple not to deviate from the set principle. Jeong says "the essence is at the Buddhist Scriptures no matter what sector you are from. It cannot be called as a Buddhist painting if it is out of the principle." In this respect, the division between traditional Buddhist paintings and modern ones are meaningless for Jeong. You can create a variety of modern Buddhist paintings as long as you stick to the scriptures and then the works can be tradition in the future. Jeong says "Suwol gwanumdo (a Buddhist painting in Goryeo Dynasty) was sold at $1.3M at Sotheby's in 1991.

This is because the work has a high esthetic value based on the Buddhist principles. This is the reason we have to create works for artistic value rather than for commercial purposes. Reflecting the trend of modern society based on the tradition will raise the status of the Korean Buddhist paintings."

Meanwhile, Jeong opened Yeonhwa Gallery on May 7 in Yangsan City so that more people can appreciate his works. Jeong also is focusing on passing down his skills. This is important for Jeong as less and less people get interested in the Buddhist paintings as they are busy to find easy and comfortable things. Jeong says "succeeding our tradition doesn't mean to carry out the tradition itself. It is to preserve and develop the tradition." Jeong plans to provide the right information about materials used in the Buddhist paintings so that the related artists can recover our valuable cultural assets according to the traditional principles. It is Jeong's hope to see new Buddhist paintings which will last more than hundreds of years.
