고령자 구강건강은 곧 삶의 질을 결정한다
건강한 노년이 보장되는 사회, 치과의사의 역할 모색

사회가 갈수록 고령화되면서, 노인환자의 비율 또한 급증하고 있다. 건강보험심사평가원의 발표에 따르면 지난 5년간 치과를 찾은 노인환자의 증가율이 요양기관 중 최고를 차지했으며, 특히 지난해 치과를 찾은 75세 이상 노인 환자는 88만 8,000명으로 5년 전에 비해 81.1% 급격히 증가한 것으로 밝혀졌다. 갈수록 증가하는 노인 치과문제에 대한 해법을 찾기 위해 활발한 활동을 펼치고 있는 대한노년치의학회 정재헌 학회장을 만나봤다.

늘어가는 노년 치과의료 수요에 대한 대처법 고심
대한노년치의학회는 급격히 변화하는 사회에서 빠른 속도로 증가하고 있는 노년층의 치과의료수요에 대한 연구와 교육 및 관련 진료법 개발을 위해 2004년 설립됐다. 설립 이래 학회는 노년층에서 발생하는 구강 문제에 대한 연구와 기술 공유, 대책 마련을 위해 다양한 활동을 펼쳐왔다. 2007년 대한치과의사협회 공식 분과학회로 인준 받으며 그 역할과 위상을 정립한 학회는 그간 정기적인 학술대회와 해외 교류 등의 활동을 통해 고령화 사회에 접어든 현 시점의 노화와 노년의 구강질환에 대한 예방, 대처 및 진료법 개발 등의 논의를 지속해왔다. 우리나라는 2000년에 65세 이상 노인인구가 7%에 이르는 ‘고령화 사회’를 거쳐, 2017년엔 14%에 이르는 ‘고령사회’ 진입을 목전에 두고 있는 지금, 학회의 역할이 더욱 중요해지리라는 생각이다.

정재헌 회장은 “폭발적으로 증가하는 노인 인구를 감안할 때, 앞으로 노년층에 대한 치과의료수요는 더욱 증가하게 될 것입니다. 학회에서는 노년층의 치과의료수요에 맞춰 연구를 진행하고 진료법을 개발해 치과의사들에게 교육하는 것이라 생각합니다. 특히 만성적인 질환을 갖고있는 노인 치과환자가 치과를 방문할 경우나 거동이 불편한 노인환자에 대한 대처법, 노인요양시설 환자들의 구강위생 관리 등 학회가 고민하고 해결책을 찾아야할 부분이 너무 많습니다. 노인 관련 유관단체들과 협력하며 고령화시대 치과의사의 역할을 찾는데 최선을 다하겠습니다”라고 말했다. 

정 회장은 환경변화에 능동적으로 대처하며, 임원의 능력을 극대화하기 위해 업무, 학술, 기획 등 3개 총괄위원회를 구성해 위원회 별로 적극적인 운영을 펼쳐나갈 것이라고 밝혔다. 또한 그는 “임기동안 고령시대에 걸맞은 임상 및 학술대회 프로그램 개발과 시니어 구강관리 전문가 양성과정의 정착, 노인치과 진료의 임상지침서 발간, 대학내 노인치과학 과목 개설 및 교재 편찬에 힘쓸 예정입니다. 또한 학회지의 질적 고양과 고령자 구강증진을 위한 정책 검토 및 추진, 유관기관과의 교류 확대 및 해외교류를 확대해나갈 방침입니다”라고 설명했다.

양질의 의료 위해서는 모두의 참여가 필요
지난 4월 5일, 정기총회를 통해 제10대 학회장으로 취임한 정재헌 교수는 1984년부터 조선대학교에 재직하며 치과대학장을 연임하고, 치과병원 임플란트센터장, 미국 미시간치과대학 객원교수를 역임하기도 했다. 그동안 조선대학교 치과대학은 광주시가 차세대 성장동력으로 추진하고 있는 치과산업 활성화에 중요한 역할을 해왔다. 조선대 치과대학에서는 ‘RIC 사업: 치과용 정밀장비 및 부품기술혁신센터’, ‘MRC 사업: 노인 구강질환제어 연구센터’, ‘의료기기임상시험센터’ 등의 국책사업을 진행해왔다.

또한 치의학전문대학원의 강동완 교수는 교육과학기술부 첨단치의공인력사업단장(2004~2009)을 역임하고, 2006년에는 ‘치과용 정밀장비 및 부품 RIC 선정’을 통해 광주시를 치과 의료산업의 메카도시로 육성하기 위한 초석을 다지기도 했다. 또한 지난 2013년에는 치과용 소재부품 기술지원센터를 광주시에 유치하며 광주의 치과용 소재부품 및 광기반 의료기기, 의료바이오, 첨단산업용 세라믹 산업 등의 파급효과로 인한 지역경제 활성화에 크게 기여하기도 했다. 

정 회장은 “공동의 미래를 열어가기 위해서는 모두의 참여가 필요합니다. 연구자와 개발자, 정부와 시민들이 힘을 한 데 모아야 국민 모두에게 양질의 의료와 복지를 제공할 수 있습니다. 저희는 앞으로도 적극적이고 창의적인 아이디어 개진과 업무 추진을 통해 솔선수범하고 앞장서는 학회가 되도록 노력 하겠습니다”라고 강조했다. 고령시대를 맞이하며 국민건강의 증진을 위해 최선의 노력을 펼치고 있는 정재헌 회장과 대한노년치의학회의 앞으로의 행보를 기대한다.

Providing methods for increasing demand in dental treatment
The Korea Academy of Geriatric Dentistry was established in 2004 in the hope of developing dental treatment methods for elderly people. The academy has carried out various related R&D and activities in this field. Approved as an academic division by Korea Dental Association in 2007, the academy has held regular symposiums and overseas exchanges to improve the dental treatment methods  for elderly people. The role of the academy is ever increasing as the Korea's population aged above 65 reached 7% in 2000 and expected to be 14% in 2017. Jeong says "the demand of dental treatment is expected to increase significantly considering the number of elderly people in our society. Our job is to research and develop better treatment methods as well as train the dentists so that they can provide appropriate services for seniors. This covers from treatment for patients with chronic dental diseases, patients with difficulty in mobility to oral health management in elderly care facilities. For this, we are working in cooperation with related organizations." 

Jeong said that they will form 3 general committees to effectively cope with changing circumstances and to maximize the member's capabilities. Jeong  continued "my goal, as the chairman of the institute, is to develop symposium programs, to build training courses, to publish clinical guidelines, to create a geriatric dentistry department in universities and to make curriculum. I will also expand exchanges with related organizations home and abroad in relation with introducing policies and their implementation."

Working together to provide quality medical services
Jeong has been working as a professor at Chosun University since 1984, served as the dental school dean, the director of the implant center at a dental clinic and a visiting professor at University of Michigan, School of Dentistry. Chosun University School of Dentistry has been playing a significant role in the industry which Gwangju City is carrying out as a next generation growth engine in the region. Its projects include 'RIC Project' related to precision equipment and component technology innovation center, 'MRC Project' related to elderly oral disease control research center and 'medical equipment clinical test center'.

Professor Kang Dong-wan in Chosun University, School of Dentistry also served as the director of cutting edge dental engineering manpower team of the Ministry of Education and Science Technology from 2004 to 2009 and built a foundation for Gwangju City to be a mecca of the dentistry industry through 'dental precision equipment and component RIC selection' in 2006. He invited dental component technology support center to the city in 2013 and contributed to the regional economy. Jeong added "we all have to work together to provide quality medical services and we will do our best to introduce active and creative ideas and treatment methods for seniors."
