“약용작물의 6차산업화, 경남대표 ‘스타상품’ 개발에 힘쓸 터”
고부가가치 산업화 목표로 산학연 네트워크 구축

농업을 새로운 시각으로 바라보아야 하는 시대가 다가오고 있다. 특히 인류의 식량 위기가 현실이 되고 있는 시점에서 농업에도 변화된 관점이 요구되고 있다. 전통적인 인식에서 ‘농업’은 고된 노동을 떠올리는 경우가 많았다. 하지만 최근의 농업은 첨단 지식을 기반으로 하는 산업으로 변모하고 있다.

6차산업 비즈니스 모델 개발 및 정착에 힘써
기후온난화가 심화되고 녹색자원과 생명산업의 중요성이 높아짐에 따라 농림축산식품부에서는 ‘농생명산업기술개발사업’을 수립하고 차세대 바이오산업 육성과 생명자원의 산업적 활용체계 구축에 지원을 강화하고 있다. 이에 일환으로 설립된 ‘지리산권 약용작물 6차산업화 사업단’은 경남 소재 2 곳의 국립대학, 지역연구소, 지자체 및 생산자 단체와 기업으로 구성되어 지난해부터 사업을 진행하고 있다. 사업단은 ‘약용작물의 보존, 저장, 생산 및 표준화 기술’을 담당하는 1차 산업팀, ‘약용작물 및 약용버섯 이용 천연조미료와 기능성음료 개발, 생활성습관질환 개선 효과검정’을 담당하는 2차 산업팀, ‘비즈니스 모델 및 마케팅 모델 개발’을 담당하는 3차 산업팀으로 세분화되어 있다.

사업단을 이끌고 있는 조계만 단장은 “본 사업은 약용작물을 이용한 6차산업화에 대한 연구개발에 주력하고 있습니다. 약용작물의 대량생산 체계를 확립하고, 고부가가치 제품화하여 농업·농촌 창조경제 실현을 추구하고 있습니다. 특히 사업팀에서는 경남을 대표할 수 있는 ‘스타상품’을 만들어내는 것을 최종목표로 하고 있습니다”라고 밝혔다. 조 단장은 지난해부터 경남 대표 향토기업인 몽고식품㈜과 공동으로 천연조미료 제품을 개발 중이며 1차 천연소스류는 이미 완성단계에 접어들었다고 설명했다. 

유기적인 협력관계 바탕으로 사업 활성화 달성
사업단은 지난 9개월간 앞으로의 사업진행을 위한 소기의 성과들을 일구어냈다. 지난해에는 ‘지리산권 농업의 새로운 가치 창출 방안을 위한 심포지엄’을 개최했으며, 이에 이어 산청한방약초 축제 기간인 5월 8일에 ‘산청한방약초의 6차산업화 전략과 비전’에 대한 워크숍을 개최할 예정이다. 이외에도 산청군 관내 약초기반 관계자의 네트워크 생태계 구축을 위한 워크숍을 개최한 바 있으며, 지난해 진주국제농식품박람회에 6차산업 주제관을 기획하기도 했다. 한편 참여기업인 ㈜자연애제약의 경우, 사업단의 기업 컨설팅을 통해 매출 신장과 ‘약초가공 우수제조시설(GMP)을 인정받았다. 조 단장은 “연구개발사업의 특성상 지리산에서 생산되는 약용작물에 대한 특허와 논문을 꾸준히 발표하고 있습니다. 인력양성 역시 지속적으로 수행하고 있으며, 올해부터는 창업대학원에서 6차산업 트랙을 개설하고 교육을 진행 중입니다”라고 설명했다. 

1차년도 결과보고를 앞두고 있는 사업단은 남은 기간 동안 초기 목표 이상의 성과를 달성하기 위해 노력하겠다고 밝혔다. 또한 2차, 3차년도에도 지속적으로 사업을 진행하여 지역 네트워크 생태계 구축과 6차산업 비즈니스 모델 개발 및 정착에 힘쓰겠다고 덧붙였다. 조 단장은 “6차 산업의 특성상 다양한 분야에서 성과를 도출해야 하는 부분이 있습니다. 사업단의 모든 구성원뿐만 아니라 관계된 연구기관 및 기업체의 유기적인 협조관계가 더없이 중요합니다.”라고 강조했다. 조계만 단장은 이에 덧붙여 “적극적인 참여와 역할분담을 통해 사업의 순조로운 진행에 도움을 준 사업팀 일원 및 학교 관계자, 연구원과 대학원생들에 감사의 인사를 전하고 싶습니다. 또한 업무에 집중할 수 있도록 배려해준 가족들에게도 고맙다는 말을 전하고 싶습니다.”라고 말했다.

농생명산업은 미래 인류의 먹거리를 확보하고, 높은 부가가치를 창출할 차세대 성장 동력으로 손꼽히고 있다. 지역산업의 활성화와 더불어 경남을 대표하는 ‘스타상품’을 개발하고자 연구에 매진하고 있는 조계만 단장과 사업단의 노력이 미래 대한민국을 이끌어 갈 원동력이 되길 기대해본다.

Development and settlement of the 6th industry business model 
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs built 'Agricultural Life Industrial Technology Development Project' and supports the next generation bio-industry and the industrial use of life resources. The 6th Industrialization of Jirisan Medicinal Crops Team was formed last year as part of this project. The team is consisted of 2 national universities in the province, regional research institutes, and local government and producers. The team has three sub teams which are 'the first industry team' that takes charge in production, reservation and standardized technique of medicinal crops, 'the second industry team' that develops natural seasoning and drinks and prevent metabolic syndrome diseases, and 'the third industry team' that develops business & marketing models.

Cho says "our job is to make medicinal crops as the 6th industry. We will build a mass production system of medicinal crops and make them as high value added products to contribute to regional economy. Our final goal is to make 'star product' that can represent the province." Cho has been developing natural seasoning in cooperation with Monggo Food since 2014 and the first natural sauce is in the completion stage.

Completing the project through organic cooperation
The team held a symposium to create high value added agricultural industry in the Jiri-mountain area last year and also held a workshop called 'The 6th Industrialization of Sancheong  Medicinal Herbs and its Strategy and Vision' during the Sancheong Medicinal Herbs Festival, as well as planning the 6th industry booth at Jinju International Agriculture and Food Expo 2015. The participant company Jayeonae Pharmaceuticals was recognized for Good Manufacturing Practice through company consulting and sales increase. Cho says "We are publishing papers on Jirisan medicinal crops and obtaining related patents. We are also fostering talented students and we recently built the 6th industry track at entrepreneurship school and is providing related training." with impending presentation of the first year result, the team said that they would do their best to achieve more than their original goals through the second and the third years. Cho says "we have to draw results from various fields. Therefore, it is really important for all the participated groups to organically cooperate each other." Cho added "I'd like to show my gratitude to my team members who are exerting their utmost efforts to create good results. I also want to thank my family who always support me."
