당장 나부터도 계속 공부를 해야 한다. 타투자체가 정확한 커리큘럼이나 그런 과정은 존재하지 않고 또한 하는 사람마다 기계세팅부터 그림스타일까지 모두 틀리기 때문에 한 두달 배워서 샵을 차린다는 개념과는 다소 거리가 있다. 보통 제대로 배우려면 직접 아티스트 앞에서 공부를 일 년이든, 이 년이든 하는 것이 정석이다. 그게 없으면 좀처럼 훌륭하게 자리 잡기가 힘들다. 

PART 1.
Q. 인터뷰에 앞서 미리 자료를 살펴보니, 의뢰를 받고 도안부터 직접 설계하여 최종적으로 타투를 몸에 새기는 작업을 한다고 들었다. 

A. 보통은 두 가지다. 타투이스트 본인이 작업하고 싶은 그림을 미리 그려놓고 하는 것과 고객과 이야기를 나눈 다음에 원하는 방향으로 도안을 짜서 하는 것. 거의 사오년 전만 하더라도 도안을 스스로 제작해서 하기보다는 온라인서치를 통하여 그대로 작업하는 것이 보편화되었었다. 그렇게 진행하는 것이 태반이었지만 요즘에는 좀 더 희소성이 있고 자신만의 타투를 새기고 싶어 하는 이들이 많기에 커뮤니케이션이라는 과정이 추가된 것으로 보면 된다. 나는 보통 고객과 이야기를 한 다음, 도안을 짜서 작업을 하는 편이다.

Q. 도안 이야기로 시작을 하다 보니, 건축가의 소통방법과도 비슷하다는 생각이 든다. 

A. 건축 업계처럼 세세하게 정보를 캐치하는 편은 아니다. 그저 고객이 어떤 느낌을 좋아하고 어떤 소재를 원하는지, 그런 이야기를 좀 나눈다. 그리고 최종적으로 타투이스트가 판단할 때, 결정된 도안이 부위에 어떻게 들어갔으면 좋은지 의논하는 과정을 거치게 되는데 이게 좀처럼 타협이 쉽지가 않다. 이를테면 이런 것이다. 나는 타투가 조금 더 과감할수록 예쁘다고 생각하는 편인데, 상대편의 고객은 작고 소소하게 하기를 원하는 분들이 더 많은 정도. 결과적으로 최대한 합의점을 찾아 만족스럽게 하기 위해 노력하고 특히 사람의 몸에 직접 타투를 새기는 것이기에 상담을 통하여 서로의 의견을 알맞게 조율하려고 한다.

Q. 말씀하신대로 그 과정이 정말 중요하겠다. 보통 타투라면 평생을 몸에 지니고 살아가야 하기에 타투이스트 입장에서 조금 더 세밀해야 할 것이고.
A. 타투를 하는 사람들마다 조금씩 틀린 편인데 내가 가장 중요하게 생각하는 것은 앞서 말했듯 고객 본인이 원했던 느낌에 얼마나 근접하게 디자인되느냐이다. 무작정 그림이 예쁘다고 하기보다 작업하는 이와 고객이 서로 소통하는 것. 그런 과정을 통해서 나오는 결과물을 중요하게 생각하는 편이다. 

PART 2.

Q. 실질적으로 미술을 전공했던 경험이 타투이스트로서 활동하는데 영향이 컸나.

A. 도움은 됐다. 하지만 그게 무조건 좋진 않았다. 틀에 맞춰진 국내의 입시미술교육은(요즘은 많이 바뀌었을 수도 있겠지만) 창작이라기보다 정해진 틀에서 얼마나 잘 그리느냐에 따라 단계가 진행되는 편이기에 나 역시 쉽게 싫증이 났었던 것 같다.(그걸 거부했었나.) 거부라기 보단 훨씬 이후에 그 때의 습관을 고치기 위한 고생을 많이 했었다. 

Q. 정형화된 입시교육을 받은 이로서 그 틀에 싫증을 느꼈다면 ‘타투’라는 접점은 현실과 타협할 수 있는 계기가 된 것이지 않을까.

A. 보통 그림을 그리고 디자인, 순수아트를 한다 해도 결국은 타협을 봐야 한다. 타협을 보는 과정에서 타투는 말씀하신 것처럼 내게 해결 또는 해소제 역할을 한 것 같다. 또한 요즘은 타투이스트들 중에도 미술을 전공한 이들이 꽤 많은 편이지만 그것은 그다지 중요한 것이 아니다. 일단 내가 늘 우선순위로 두는 것은 기본적인 노력과 타투이스트로서의 마인드인데 워낙 이 분야는 완성이라는 것이 없는 편이기에 계속 연구하고 노력해야만 한다. 정리하자면 그런 끊임없는 마인드를 얼마나 잘 유지하느냐가 중요한 것이다.

Q. 작년 타 주간지와의 인터뷰에서 ‘나는 예술가가 아니다’라는 말을 했었다. 고객과 직접 소통하고 상상을 하며 작업까지 이르게 되는 행위 자체를 창작예술로 볼 수도 있지 않을까.

A. 그 때도 비슷하게 답했지만 타투를 굳이 예술로 이야기한다면 상업예술로 표현하는 것이 적절할 것이다.(좀 더 대중에 가까운 부분을 말하는 것인가.) 내 생각은 그렇다. 타투라는 것은 그리는 이와 도화지가 되는 이 모두 살아있음을 뜻한다. 그렇게 서로 소통해서 함께 결과물을 만들어내는 것임에 비해, 일반 순수예술은 도화지에 홀로 그림을 그리는 것에 그치는 편이지 않나. 그렇게 완성된 작품은 한마디 말이 없다. 어디까지나 작품을 완성시킨 작가의 것으로 존재할테니까. 우리가 익히 알고 있는 그림, 글쓰기와는 분명 차이가 있다는 말이다. 

PART 3.

Q. 타투유니크와 관련해서 많은 이들이 이야기를 하더라. ‘별도의 이벤트 대신 오직 세련된 실력으로 평가받는다’라는 피드백으로 유명하던데.

A. 타투를 업으로 삼고 있는 이들이 거의 그렇지 않나 싶다. 타투이스트들의 성향 자체가 홍보를 많이 하는 편은 아닐 것이다. 이것은 조금 민감한 부분이긴 하지만 결국은 본인의 마인드 차이이지 않을까. 상업적으로냐 아니면 subculture느낌으로 하고 싶은 것을 하느냐의 차이일 뿐이다. 나쁜 것은 없다.

Q. 굳이 따지자면 대표님은 후자인가?
A. 나는 중간으로 하겠다.(웃음) 

Q. 타투유니크 측으로 문의도 많이 오는 편이라 알고 있다. 해외 쪽 기관이나 국내 에이전시와 연계하여 협연을 원하거나 하는 식의 제의를 자주 받진 않나.

A. 아직 해외 쪽은 잘 모르겠고 국내에서 그러한 콜라보 작업을 좋아하는 편이다. 다만 연락이 와도 끝까지 이어지지 않고 중간에 캔슬되는 기획들이 많다. 에이전시나 진행 중인 의류 쪽으로나 연락은 정말 많이 온다.(엎질러지는 이유가 아직은 타투에 대한 부정적인 시선 때문이 아닐까.) 모르겠다. 다만 앞서 이야기했듯, 나는 그런 것을 진행하는 일 자체를 좋아한다. 그저 타투를 몸에 한다고 해서 그게 전부가 아니듯, 이런 문화 자체를 누군가와 함께 다루는 것이 반갑고 한편으로는 소통하며 알릴 수도 있다는 것이 매력적인 것 같다.  

PART 4.

Q. 타투를 키워드로 페스티벌이나 행사는 자주 열리나.

A. 좀처럼 자주 열리는 편은 아니지만 타투컨벤션이라고 타투하는 이들에겐 문화의 일종으로 소통하면서 서로의 스타일을 함께 공유할 수 있는 활동이 있다. 또한, 타투를 배제한 아트워크와 같은 행사를 개최하여 그림 전시를 하곤 한다. 이주전에도 홍대에서 열렸던 아트워크에 참여했었다. 

Q. 아쉬운 부분도 있을 것 같다. 직접 타투를 키워드로 페스티벌이 자주 열리면 좋을텐데.

A. 꼭 그렇지도 않다. 타투도 멀리보면 일종의 그림이기 때문에 경계를 따로 두려하는 것은 아니다. 일단 창작 활동이라는 것은 그림이나 음악, 영상. 이런 것들은 다 같은 종류라고 보기에 오히려 이런 행사라도 자주 있는 것이 좋다. 요즘도 계속 생겨나고 있는 추세고. 

Q. 머지않아 여름시즌이고 타투를 하는 이들도 더욱 많아질 것으로 보인다. 대표님께서도 더욱 바빠지실텐데 앞으로의 계획과 관련하여 한 말씀 부탁드린다.

A. 날씨가 더워진다고 해서 더욱 치중하고 그런 것은 없다. 초심을 갖고 그림 열심히 그리고 더 많이 공부하는 것이 내가 늘 최종으로 삼고 있는 점이다.

Q: What's the process of tattooing?
A: There are two ways. Either the tattooist designs the patterns or designs them according to customer's wants. It was normal that we did it through online search and make it accordingly about 4 or 5 years ago. But nowadays, people want their own style and something conspicuous to express themselves and this requires me to communicate with them. So I design the patterns after a consulting. 

Q: Is your job similar to an architect?
A: Our job does not require that much details. We just talk about what kind of patterns they like to be on their skin. The difficult part, though, is how the designed patterns can be placed on the desired part of their body. I suggest something bold and expressive but if customer goes the other way it takes some time to reach an agreement. Nevertheless, I provide utmost care and service as my job is to engrave patterns on human skin. 

Q: How do you reach an agreement with your customer on the design?
A: Each tattooist have their own skills and know-how. The most important element for me is to satisfy customer's wants. Tattoo doesn't necessarily require beautiful patterns but it's more about communication so that both parties can be happy with the result. 

Q: Did your majoring in art help you to be a tattooist?
A: It helped but not effectively. I don't know how much it changed now but Korea's art education is not about creation but about how well you draw within the typical framework. That's why I easily get bored in the class. I actually tried really hard to remove this habit in order to apply creativity to my job as tattooist. 

Q: Does that mean that you compromised with the reality?
A: Well, it doesn't matter I do paintings, design or whatever as we all have to compromise with the reality one way or the other. I just chose to do tattooing and if that can be called compromise then so be it. There are many tattooists who majored in art nowadays but that's not an important fact. They chose this as their profession so they need to have professionalism in the field and to work hard. 

Q: You once said you are not an artist in the interview with a weekly magazine. Why tattooist cannot be called artist?
A: If someone wants to call tattoo as art, then it could be called as commercial art. The difference is artists rather work alone with the materials they chose whileas tattooists use human skin as a material to express their work so they need to deal with their customers. But at the end of the day, the work I've done on the skin remains as my work.

Q: Tattoo Unique has become popular and is praised for sophisticated design. What is your form of promotion?
A: I guess most tattooists do not much care about promotion. I think it's our nature. It's just the matter of choice between tattoo as commercial or as a subculture. There's no good and bad between these two. 

Q: Are you one of the latter?
A: I'd like to be in the middle. 

Q: Do you often receive proposals from other business?
A: I'm actually being offered various business proposals from other companies though many of them get canceled in the middle of the process. I mainly get a lot of contacts from fashion related companies or agencies. It is good thing to collaborate with others and I love to do it as I can share my passion in tattoo with others and we can create a new trend and culture through various cultural events and related promotions. 

Q: How often do tattoo related events or festivals take place?
A: Not often but there is an event called Tattoo Convention where tattooists gather together to communicate and share each other's styles and ideas. Art Work also is one we participate but we exhibit our drawings and paintings rather than tattoo. 

Q: Do you think that there should be more tattoo related events?
A: Not really. Tattoo itself is painting. It means that it already is a form of art like paintings, music, images, etc. so we don't need to separate it from art by having tattoo related events only. I'd rather it be a form of art in art and culture related festivals to add a variety. 

Q: More people are expected to have a tattoo as summer is at its doorstep. What is your future plan?
A: I actually don't have any plan. I just stick to my guns and try my best all the time.
