A happy school building up with confidence and communication
To rear the future talents with autonomous, democratic operation of the school
Won Yoo-geun, principal of Weonjoo Chiak High School

Man cannot live by himself. People get together to make a group and the society. What matters most in the society where everyone assembles to get along is a ‘sense of community’ with which we can communicate and give consideration. It is obvious that a society cannot thrive without a sense of community. We visited Weonjoo Chiak High, which is focusing on the education for a live-and-let-live society and for delivering the true value of happiness and love.

Constructs the basis for student-oriented culture
Chiak High School is a new distinguished school founded in March 2005 and building up learning together under the school precepts of ‘sincerity, creation and service.’ Its principal Weon Yoo-geun said that the ultimate goal of Chiak is to realize a school in ‘more happiness’ with self-directed and considerate students with self-esteem, teachers who love and build up together with pupils, and credible and safe school.

In 2015, Chiak High is showing many changes. First, going to school by 8: 30 a.m. has reduced the students’ burden in attending school with a change into open-end classroom by keeping its inner windows open. Duties are divided by school year for carful students’ management and efforts are made to improve the quality of education by operating a research society and class work study rooms. Besides, with time-focused creative experience activities, such as volunteer work at farm or career/integration accounts of travels, the school helps students experience diverse worlds and build up capabilities from them. The school is also making endeavors to have self-directed learning culture settle by engaging the students in self-governing activities and supporting independent clubs positively.

Breathing Wednesdays
One difference of Chiak High from others is its fill-blown club activities. There are 52 regular clubs in consideration of diverse tastes and aptitudes and 57 independent clubs for subject study, providing students with full opportunities to develop their own dream and talents. Such live club activities were made possible by ‘Breathing Wednesday system’ put into practice by Chiak High.

Time after the fifth class hour of each Wednesday has been set aside by the school for breathing. So on Wednesdays in the first and third week they operate this system for regular club activities, while in the second and fourth is dedicated to independent activities and the students engage in working on the subjects in self-regulating clubs of their own making. The school, together with career seeking and delivery of information, provides an opportunity to access a little scholarship related to their major before going on to college. The school holds diverse concerts for humanities, social sciences, natural science, occupation, academy, etc. all the year round with continuity so that students may participate in their area of interest on their own and help them nurse the will toward inquiry. Teachers are also trying hard to enhance their capabilities for renewed education through class work conference and training and improve the quality of their class.

Principal Weon Yoo-geun explained, “The essence of Breathing Wednesdays lies in the growth of both teacher and student. While teaching staff enhances professionalism, students are building up creative capability through free activities.”
Among others, principal Weon Yoo-geun stresses that it is the role of an educational institution and educator to provide a safe space and diverse opportunities in which students may let their dreams run. He said, “The basics of education is to take the lead and show an good example. If an educator approaches in such a true frame of mind, it builds a connection in which students can trust and follow teachers, making a stable basis for education. For this purpose, Chiak High will never spare active support in the years to come.” Principal Weon Yoo-geun says that a school is formed by students, teachers, parents and the community together. We expect a positive and productive energy to be earned by students in Chiak High, which is making systematic efforts by readjusting and administering the curriculum rather than for a short-term result of performance.
