Sanggu Lee, the CEO of Busanhang Bridge
Maintaining Busan Harbor Bridge in a sound condition with continuous R&D and devotion
Introducing a landmark of Busan
Increase the volume of traffic!!!

Lee is six feet tall and has outspoken personality. His credo is "If you can't avoid it, enjoy it!". Lee says "I'm not a person who has a tendency to observe how other people work but I myself have to be actively involved." Busan Harbor Bridge has regained its vibration since Lee became the CEO of Busanhang Bridge in April 2013. Lee, with the director Sangsup Kang and five other staff, is exerting his effort to increase the volume of traffic on the bridge. They held an event on the bridge in February and March that they gave out a free ticket for professional football match to 4 drivers picked up by lot each day with a wrist watch and a free buffet voucher as additional gifts. As a result, the traffic rate increased by 42.9% from 38.7% with the average number of 2,600 more vehicles a day. This was only possible with Lee's plan and engagement in the field work backed up by his cooperative staff. But their research and effort were never stopped there. Lee says "in order to bring up another promotional event, we decided to write down our own ideas on a paper to be picked up by lot. Coincidentally, my idea was picked. It is called 'Shortcut to Love' with the sub title of 'Shortcut to Yeongdo and Nam Districts, Shortcut to Saving Time and Money'." The idea came from Lee's firm will to ease transportation in Busan and the surrounding area.

Active social contribution alongside an honorary ambassador
Busanhang Bridge signed an agreement to donate $120,000 to Community Chest Of Korea on 23 March at the Busan City Hall. The fund comes from the corporations relating to the investment in the bridge and they are Hyundai Development Company ($9,000), Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction ($9,000), Samwhan Corporation ($9,000), and Busanhang Bridge ($10,000). They agreed to donate the allocated amount every month until March 2016 and the fund will be used for child welfare in the region. In addition, Busanhang Bridge appointed Jeonghyup Lee (Sangju FC) as an honorary ambassador. The football player Lee's acceptance in playing the role as an ambassador drew a great deal of attention. Also, the staff of Busanhang Bridge's voluntary donation is expected to be a role model in the region. Lee says "I believe that if we show our good will and sincerity to our society, the citizens will actively participate in our good deed and I would like to use this positive energy to promote our company and the bridge." Apart from the donation, the staff of Busanhang Bridge has been voluntarily directing the traffic around the construction site of an underground roadway nearby whenever it gets congested. Although it is not their job, the staff are willingly participating in the activity as they ardently trust Lee's leadership and warmheartedness.

Winning 2015 Civil Engineering Structure Award
Lee learned a good news last month that the Busan Harbor Bridge was chosen for 2015 Civil Engineering Structure Award. It is the most prestigious award in the engineering field in Korea and this is the second time for Busanhang Bridge to win an award after receiving The Best Construction Award from Korea Concrete Institute. The judges screened 12 candidate structures based on creativity, artistic value, convenience, eco-friendliness and aesthetic value and chose Busan Harbor Bridge as the winner of the year. As the Busan Harbor Bridge crosses the Busan Port, the distance between the two towers were carefully measured to be 540 meters so that large ships can pass safely under the bridge and also the 190 meter towers were made with a diamond shape to resist typhoons. Diamond shape is much more difficult than H shape but it can effectively disperse strong winds blowing from the sea. With its cutting edge engineering, safety and aesthetic value, the Busan Harbor Bridge stands as a representative landmark in Busan and for this reason, the bridge is highly expected to draw a great number of tourists especially in the holiday season.

Breathing together with the citizens
Many businesses nowadays tend to seek their own interests. But this does not apply to Busanhang Bridge. Lee says "I'd been living only in Seoul since I graduated high school but when I went down to Busan on a business I was literally shocked by the charm of the city. If you come down and see, I'm sure you will understand what I mean. Mountains behind and the sea in front, Busan is a fantastic city and I want to spend the rest of my life with my whole family in the city." Like the tone of his impression on the city indicates, he has become more than the natives. Lee added that he never knew that he liked the sea this much before and is now fully enjoying going for work by watching the sunrise from the sea and coming back home by crossing the bridge over the sea. Lee continues "I feel really happy for the first time in 10 years. I doubt whether there was a time that I enjoyed my work this much in my life." His being happy, in a way, is quite remarkable considering the fact that there are many issues for him to solve such as incredibly slow construction of the underground roadway. But this, in fact, is leaving a strong impression on the staff and encourages them to lead their lives in a more positive way. The Busan Harbor Bridge is only one year old. But it has already become famous as a tourist attraction in the city. But to maintain the bridge in a sound condition is not the work for the Busanhang Bridge only but it can be achieved by active participation of the citizens.
